Mission Name: Tending to the Shrine
Rank: D
Mission Location: Sakuragakure
Challenges: Arc
Task: Recently an older shrine near the outskirts of Sakuragakure has been having its fair share of woes. They're requesting some shinobi aid in bringing it back to a better condition. Tiles need to be replaced, some dusting in the rafters, and general upkeep is being requested. Some hooligans recently started to cause problems in the nearby area so the shrine staff are unsure if they have been occupying the shrine or not due to being elderly individuals who have to contend mainly with the shrine's grounds over the shrine itself due to health. Give a helping hand and check out to see if some the shrine has become a hangout spot as they suspect. They do not imagine they would be there during the day so there should not be any issues cleaning up.

The sigh that Chiharu let out seemed to reverberate through his very bones. While he’d gotten a lot of work done for his village since he’d obtained leadership of it, there was still always more to do. Recently, one of the older shrines had requested help, suspecting that the spot had become a hangout for some of the local hooligans. Instead of sending a genin to clear them out, Chiharu had come himself, desperate to stretch his legs for the first time in weeks. It wouldn’t be too tricky, but it would at least give him something to do besides the monotonous endless paperwork he’d been dealing with.
Making his way onto the shrine’s grounds, the man stopped for a second, to take the layout in. It wasn’t large, but there was a courtyard, clearly declining with only aging priests and shrinemaidens to tend to it. The cobblestones were cracked, weeds sprouting from between them in places. It had been swept semi recently, but much of the plants and courtyard itself seemed to be in a state of disrepair. Altogether, it was easy to see why troublemakers might have chosen the place for a hideout. Though, it meant that Chiharu would have to scare them off, and repair what damage to the shrine’s interior he’d find.
There was sure to be a fair bit of damage, he suspected.
Naginata in hand, the young kage tread carefully over the cobblestones, watching for any signs of movement. The caretakers of the shrine had thought that the troublemakers wouldn’t be there during the day, but it didn’t hurt to be vigilant. He checked around the whole courtyard first, all the while making sure that nobody was there to get in his way. He was really hoping to avoid fighting too much.

Luckily for him, there were no signs of anybody being inside. There were definite signs of the hooligans, random garbage scattered in the corners, but nothing to indicate anybody was actually in the shrine. Good, that made his job easier. Pushing the door open, the young man took in the destruction on the part of the shrine that had been indicated to him. And it was destruction indeed.
Holes in the walls, and bottles scattered across the floor. Spray paint on the tatami mats, and garbage absolutely everywhere. There were even a few suspicious stains on what had probably once been something like a chair. Rolling his eyes at what was definitely not a clean space, the young man rolled up his sleeves and got to work. First we’re the bottles. He’d been provided with cleaning supplies by the shrine, so those he shoved into a recycling bag to deal with later. There were quite a few, proving that whoever had been squatting here had been doing so for some time.
Some of the things he’d need to replace another time, the tatami mats especially. The garbage and remains of that chair, though, he could definitely deal with, so he moved to deal with those next. He was sorely glad that he had gloves to avoid touching anything directly. Moving the chair’s remains came first, outside with the bags of bottles to be disposed of upon leaving the shrine.

The next part was a bit trickier, even with the gloves. The rotting garbage and food remains packed quite a smell, and he was without a mask to avoid smelling it. After a bit of thinking, he came to an idea, and flashed through the signs for the transformation technique. Temporarily giving himself no nose with the technique, he’d be able to avoid the bad smell, and thus, saving his nose (and stomach) from the stench of rotting food. That taken care of, the pink-haired man gave a pleased smile, carefully stuffing all the garbage into bags brought specifically for this purpose. He made sure to get all of it into the bag
That taken care of, he surveyed the area to see what else he could do. There were some tiles in the main entryway that needed replaced, and the rafters of some rooms needed dusting. The garbage now taken care of, he let go of the transformation technique, and set about dealing with the rafters, the easier of the two tasks. There were a lot, and he had to get up there, but the problem was easily taken care of with some simple wall-walking to reach where he needed to go. From there, the task was straightforward, and completed easily.
The tiles would take him much longer, many of them cracked. Replacement tiles and grout had been provided, but prying up the old, broken ones was a larger effort than he’d initially thought, since he had to be careful not to damage anything else in the process. This was perhaps his longest task by far, just prying up the old tiles taking him nearly an hour by itself. But eventually, the old tiles had been successfully pulled up, and he could move on to placing the fresh ones.
After giving himself a rough estimate of how many he’d need, he started the tedious process of placing each new tile down. There were a fair few that needed replacing, which hardly surprised him at this point. It was very tedious, placing each tile and making sure they were even. The grout wasn’t too bad to do, but it was messy, and Chiharu knew that he was most likely going to have to burn these clothes with how much grime had made it’s way onto them during the process of cleaning up the shrine. For all that this task was tedious, though, he definitely still preferred it to his paperwork. Physical labor, at least, was useful for keeping his physique up. He needed to remain strong and fast, as a weapon user.
Hours after he’d started, the man finally finished with his task and stood, admiring his handiwork. It wasn’t perfect, he was no professional carpenter, but he thought he’d done a good job. He’d still need to come back to deal with the things he hadn’t had the supplies for, but it looked much better already. Wiping some sweat from his forehead, he exited the building, ready to report on his work to the shrine’s caretakers.
