While You Read:

Today was like any other day for most folk, the forecast anticipates mostly partly cloudy skies, with occasional showers sprinkled intermittently throughout the next couple of days or so. And depending on who you asked at the time, you'd get a wide array of answers as to what "normalcy" on a day-to-day basis looked like for everyone. Many of the village citizens without any connection not the shinobi forces of Hoshigakure would be going about their daily routines; some would be out working in the fields, tending to livestock, or even selling their wares in the market square. Others would be at home, caring for children or elderly relatives, or simply enjoying a quiet moment of relaxation before the next day came.

However, for those who are living and working within the village itself, who have seen firsthand what it's like to live under the constant threat of attack from outside forces, normalcy was something that they'd long since given up on. For them, it's just another day of preparing for the next battle, training hard to become stronger so that they can defend their home against those who want nothing more than to see it destroyed. It was this sense of uncertainty and unease that seemed to permeate throughout the village, as if there was always something lurking just around the corner, waiting to strike when you least expected it. And while many tried to carry on with their lives as best as possible, there was no denying that there was a sense of tension in the air, a feeling that anything could happen at any moment.

As for Ryoinsatsu Jurei, she's currently—and quite recently at that—arose from her slumber. The nature of her sleep, for one, could be described as peculiar. Just now, she dreamt of what she could scarcely recall as an assortment of food was at the family dining table and the display would beckon even the most renowned restaurants as to the recipes concocted in the noble household. With over a dozen dishes laid bare on display, her short-term memory bequeaths images of a feast fit for royalty: for instance, there was a whole roast chicken, glazed with honey and stuffed with herbs; a platter of grilled fish served with lemon and capers; an assortment of fresh fruit, including apples, pears, and grapes; a selection of cheeses; and even a bowl of ice cream for dessert and sugar cookies.

The dream itself felt so real that Jurei's stomach growled at the mere thought of it. She could still taste the sweetness of the honey on her tongue, smell the savory aroma of roasted chicken, and feel the coolness of the ice cream melting in her mouth. But it was just that: a dream. As soon as she woke up, all traces of the feast vanished from her mind like smoke in the wind. And yet, despite its fleeting nature, there was something about that dream that lingered in Jurei's mind, something that made her want to hold onto it for as long as possible. It wasn't just about the food itself, but rather the sense of warmth and comfort that came with it.

But alas, there's no rest for the weary and a new day dawns today for her to seize. The sun had risen over Hoshigakure and its rays shone through the window of Jurei's bedroom. She stretches and yawns, rubbing the sleep from her eyes before getting out of bed and heading to the bathroom to get ready for the day ahead. She splashes water on her face, brushes her teeth, and then takes a quick shower. Once she's done, she puts on her usual outfit: a burgundy, criss-cross back, corduroy, overall dress with an off-white sweater underneath, a pair of low-heel stiletto booties, a pair of black spats, and a silver, cross-shaped necklace that rests on her bosom.

When she approaches the bedroom door and swings it open, a familiar, almost overpowering scent permeates through her nostrils and energizes the almond-shaped organ in her cranium into maximum overdrive. It's that smell. That same, mouth-watering smell from her dream last night. The scent of honey-glazed chicken wafts through the air and makes Jurei's stomach growl with anticipation. She follows the trail down the hall and into the kitchen where she finds her mother standing at the stove, stirring something in a pot. And beside her by the long kitchen island is... the exact set of dishes she experienced all down to the last, minute detail!

But... wait...

Surely, this could be a coincidence? What odds can one fathom that what they dreamt would become reality? It's not like Jurei had never dreamt of food before, but this was just too specific. She couldn't help but wonder if there was something more at play here.

"Oh, good morning, Rielle," Her mother, Chihiro, greets her as she enters the kitchen space. "Did you sleep well?"

"Yeah, I did," Jurei replies, still trying to wrap her head around what was going on. "Um, Mom, is there a special occasion that I missed earlier? You've made enough food to feed half the village's population!"

"Oh, no," Her mother laughs and shakes her head. "I just felt like cooking up a feast this morning. You know how it is; sometimes you just wake up with a craving for something specific, and you can't get it out of your head until you make it happen. I'm sure your father will appreciate it too when he comes home from work later."

Jurei nods slowly, not sure what to make of the situation. She's never been one to believe in coincidences, but she can't deny that this seems like an awfully strange coincidence if there ever was one. Maybe she's overthinking things? Maybe it really was just a dream and nothing more? Either way, she decides to let it go for now and enjoy the food that's been prepared for her. She takes a seat at the table and helps herself to some of the dishes, savoring each bite as if it were her last. The chicken is perfectly cooked, with just the right amount of crispy skin and juicy meat; the fish is tender and flaky; the fruit is sweet and refreshing; the cheese is rich and creamy; and the ice cream is cool and smooth.

"This is amazing, Mom," Jurei says between bites. "You really outdid yourself this morning."

"Thank you, dear," Chihiro replies with a smile. "I'm glad you're enjoying it."

Jurei continues to eat her meal in silence, trying to figure out what was going on. Because now that she thought about it, there was something else strange about this situation: how did her mother know what she had dreamt about last night? It's true that they're close enough for her mother to know what kind of food she likes best, but this seemed like an awfully specific coincidence if there ever was one. Unless... No. It must be as a result of happenstance. As her banquet fit for a princess concludes with a warm and satisfied belly, Jurei makes her final preparations before bids her mother well and makes her exit out of her home into the global theater.

And theatrics she shall find herself as the actor and soon, a playwright will begin the first act among many! Shortly after leaving the establishment, her eyes grace upon the sight of a... large stuffed teddy bear trotting along the village streets with a toddler standing along its shoulders? Jurei's immediate reaction is to look around in bewilderment, wondering if anyone else has noticed this strange scene unfolding before them. She's not the only one who's seen it though; there are several other villagers nearby who have stopped what they're doing to stare at the bizarre spectacle.

The toddler seems to be having a great time riding on top of the bear, laughing and clapping his hands as he goes. The bear itself looks quite realistic, with soft fur and shiny black eyes that stare straight ahead. It's hard to believe that this isn't just a real animal walking through town, but Jurei knows better. She's been living in Hoshigakure long enough to recognize when something supernatural is going on. And right now, she can tell that there's definitely something strange about that bear...

And her intuition is correct to assume so. Pacing herself slowly after the prior spectacle, she finds distant lights that seem to proverbially dance to a rhythm of their own. Upon closer examination, she realizes that they're not just lights; they're fairies! They flutter around the streets, leaving trails of sparkles in their wake as they go. Jurei watches in awe as they fly past her, their wings beating rapidly as they zip by. She's never seen anything like this before and it's truly a sight to behold.

The fairies are small, with delicate features and gossamer wings that shimmer in the sunlight. They come in all different colors: pink, purple, blue, green, yellow, orange, red, and even black. Their bodies are made of what looks like glass or crystal and they seem to be made of light itself. However, the magic—both figuratively and perhaps literally—dispels from the mischief they engage with the common folk. Some of the fairies are playing pranks on people by stealing their belongings or hiding them in strange places; others are causing trouble by breaking things or making a mess; while some are simply causing chaos for the sake of it.

Jurei watches as one fairy flies past her and snatches an apple from a vendor's cart, then flies off with it before the vendor can catch him. Another fairy is flying around a group of people and making them chase after him, while another is flying around a building and making people think there's someone inside when there isn't. The fairies seem to have no particular goal in mind other than causing havoc and having fun, but their antics are starting to get out of hand.

In an attempt to quell the quiet chaos, she makes her approach toward the fairy that stole the apple from the vendor. Luckily, the height at which this fairy flies is just within reach for her to safely retrieve the stolen goods, but she'll need to time it correctly to achieve her goal. Performing the "Ram" hand seal, her figure distorts and seems to vanish into thin air before suddenly reappearing in front of the fairy! The fairy is caught off guard by this sudden movement and drops the apple in surprise, but quickly recovers and flies off to cause more mischief elsewhere. Jurei quickly retrieves the apple before it plummets to the cobblestone ground and watches as the fairy goes, then sighs and shakes her head. She's never seen anything like this before, and she's not sure what to make of it. Are these fairies some kind of supernatural phenomenon?

Returning the item to its rightful owner, she decides to finally get some answers. "I'm sorry you had to experience that, uncle. Would you happen to know what's happened lately? I thought fairies were supposed to exist in myths and legends and... well, that's not the case."

"I wish I could say I knew more, dear," He replies with a shrug. "But this is the first time I've seen anything like this myself. It seems like these fairies have come out of nowhere and started causing trouble all over town. I've heard stories about them before, but I never thought they were real..." The vendor sighs and shakes his head. "It's been one crazy day after another since last night. First, there was that bear walking through town, then the fairies came out of nowhere. Next thing you know, we'll be seeing pigs fly across the sky as though it were the natural order of things!"

In the distance, a faint squeal could be heard from above. When the two look up, they see a flying pig soaring through the sky.

"Well... I guess pigs do fly now," The vendor says, still staring after the flying pig with wide eyes. He shakes his head and turns back to Jurei. "I don't know what's going on around here, but it's definitely not normal. I hope things go back to normal soon; I don't know how much more of this crazy stuff I can handle!"

"Yeah... I hope so, too. Anyway, sorry again for the trouble. I'll try and look into this to make sure there aren't any further disruptions." Jurei assures him before taking her leave. Nothing so far makes any sense at all and the young Ryoinsatsu struggles to find any semblance of reason that could help put two-and-two together for what now may as well equal any number the beholder wants. And the magnitude and reach of these strange incidents' influence may well span over the entirety of the village. In another attempt to localize her field of investigation, she opts to scout the Ninja Academy first. And reasonably so, for children are often progenitors of unrelenting imagination and dreams. While also being likely candidates to become victims of their own creations.

Real Spooky Hours Empty Re: Real Spooky Hours

Sat Nov 04, 2023 3:41 pm
Masashi’s night was one of the better ones he’s had in a long time. It wasn’t uncommon for Masashi to dream at night, but most of them were not what one would describe as memorable. This dream was different though, it felt so real that the Uzumaki Jounin could have sworn that he wasn’t asleep. Masashi was laying in bed, enjoying just resting for a few moments before the inevitable requirement of life that he get out of bed. He enjoyed the plush comfort of his bed for a few minutes longer before getting out of bed with a sigh. Masashi got cleaned up and went down into the dining room for a leisurely breakfast, prepared by his butler. There wasn’t anything super fancy, he had a mission to do today and eating too much would not be a smart idea. After eating, Masashi finished getting dressed and left his home. He would be on his own for the mission so there was no need to wait somewhere or go to a meeting point, the Uzumaki Jounin would just head out.

His mission was one that he’d done some time ago with Akaboshi and Keina. There was a fearsome beast in the Tachibana wildlife preserve that was causing problems and had to be dealt with. There was very little information in terms of what kind of beast it was, but Masashi was advised to deal with it with extreme prejudice, using any means necessary to take care of it. Masashi was not one to relish in killing things, but when it came to the mission, he would follow it to the letter. Now that he was a better shinobi than he was before, he was confident in his abilities to simply track down this threat and deal with it without resorting to try baiting it out like they had done last time, so he would just make his way to Tachibana.

The wildlife preserve was not as boisterous and full of life as he remembered from the last time he was here. Something was definitely wrong here and this needed to be corrected quickly. Masashi began scouring the area for signs of this terror and came across some slaughtered animals. Masashi stopped quickly to examine them; they had some pretty severe wounds, and no signs of anything missing. Masashi’s blood ran cold, whatever did this wasn’t killing for food, it was killing because it just wanted to. Not much that Masashi was aware of would do that. Nothing he could do here so he would have to move on and find this thing before it de-populated the entire preserve. Preparing for the worst, Masashi would place a couple senbon on the lightning arc seals affixed to his sniper’s bracers, and pulled some of his explosive clay out, shaping it into a pair of kunai.

It wasn’t much longer before he heard a growling noise, and a long black arm reached out of the shadows to grab at him as he moved through the forest. Masashi nimbly moved out of the way throwing one of the Kunai he had prepared, once it was close enough to where he thought the base of the arm was, he activated the seal of confrontation to cause the kunai to explode. Not only would this damage the beast, which gave out a scream of pain and rage, but it also illuminated the area, allowing Masashi to see what exactly it was. It was definitely not natural, it reminded Masashi of a mask beast that a Tau would create with their Kekkei Genkai, only that it had no distinctive mask. The explosion had caused some flesh wounds, but the arm was still intact. Masashi would follow up the kunai with one of his sniper’s bracers, activating the attached lightning arc seal and sending the senbon towards the creatures center of mass. The distinctive whipcrack would startle any remaining animals nearby and cause them to run away. The senbon flew straight and true, puncturing the beast’s chest and travelling straight through and embedding itself in a tree some ways away. Masashi would take this time to activate his Sage Mode and charge directly at the beast, he had no way of knowing how strong the creature was, so overkill was the suggested course of action. He would activate a chakra scalpel on the hand that had just released the senbon and proceed to slice at the beasts limbs with it, opting to go for direct damage then searching for vitals. The beast tried to fight back but it was not fast enough to keep up with the ferocity of Masashi’s strikes. It screamed again and the Uzumaki Jounin took advantage to throw the last explosive kunai into the beast’s mouth, leaping away, and then triggering it with the seal of confrontation. The resulting explosion disintegrated most of the beast’s body, the rest started to just crumble to dust and float away. Masashi looked at the remains with concern and a small amount of fear. He had no idea what that was, but he needed to make sure the village was aware that there was some form of new threat out there. He made his way back to the village, made his report and went home. Upon arriving home his staff had cooked him a large, sumptuous meal to help him relax after a difficult mission. He stuffed himself and around when he was about to go to bed was when he had actually woken up.

Masashi could almost feel the fullness from that meal still as he climbed out of bed and walked downstairs, a smile on his face. Imagine to his surprise that there was an identical buffet sitting on his dining room table. Upon speaking with the staff, they were just as confused. Masashi, thinking back to his dream, hurriedly got cleaned up and dressed and made his way into the village. Along the way he encountered one of the village’s Chuunin, coincidentally on the way to his home to advise him of a minor situation going on in the village and that he was to head to the academy to investigate and deal with any situations that arose there. Upon arrival, he noticed that the academy was swarming with little goblins and other similar creatures. Not something that you encounter outside of a dream normally, but here they were. There was another shinobi already here, a dark-skinned shinobi with platinum blonde hair. He would wave her over, along with anyone else that showed up and tell them the same thing. “Seems that these types of creatures are popping up all over the village. Our task for right now is to deal with them by any means necessary. Assume that they are dangerous and eliminate them quickly and without hesitation, we don’t want any students or villagers hurt or killed as a result of these things.” Masashi would then move off and start attacking the creatures with kunai, getting in close and stabbing them in what he hoped were vital areas, causing the ones he killed to start to disintegrate.

Once the creatures had been dealt with, the Uzumaki Jounin looked around the area to confirm that there were no more threats before moving to the front gate of the academy. A woman was just running past, frantically looking around until her eyes fell on him. She abruptly changed direction and made a bee-line for him. “I need your help,” she said. “There’s something wrong with my son, please come quickly.”

Real Spooky Hours Empty Re: Real Spooky Hours

Mon Nov 06, 2023 1:04 am
As Koda was outside of his home and foraging for plants to make special fuinjutsu inks, he decided to fall asleep in nature, in the plains of tall grass dancing in the wind, sleeping under the stars. As Tso coiled up, Koda layed again the giant centipede, using it as a pillow and falling asleep quickly.

''Good night Tso, wake me up if you feel tremors in the ground alright?'' would say Koda before sleeping.

''Sure young'un! Lets sleep now, we gotta go back to the village tomorrow morning, we're already late.'' would reply Tso inside of Koda's mind, speaking with telepathy, both understanding each other.

As they both fell asleep, they both found themselves in a dream, as if they shared the same immaginative realm trough their sleep.

The fields were lush with flowers, colorful buds filling the plain and polen clusters filling the air, as if it was snowing but from down to up. The air was aromatic with an essence of petals and herbals notes, and Tso was happily burrowing up and down the earth, plunging down, and jumping up out of it, as if the enormous centipede was swimming in it, dancing and twirling around in happyness. Koda was laying on the ground a large cloth, and as if magic was true, as soon as he unrolled the large red cloth ornated with white embroidery, it filled with the most delicious banquet, a picnic of cured meats, vegetables, cheeses, berries and other delicacies of his tribe. Everything was there: the rolls of cured elk meat, the sauces made from that unique yellow spice that grew under special trees, the fermented beans they used to cultivate in their gardens, the chutney they made with acidic greens tart fruits, sugary and savory at once, and the dense flat bread crunchy with grains and dark green nuts harvested from the forrest. The cheeses of mountains goats, both fresh bright white ones, soft and almost sweet, mixed with honey and confie cloud berries, ranging to the old cracking hard cheeses, rippened and sharp, that mixed so well with the bread, as well as the game heart paté. Koda was salivating when looking at this feast, and as if the magic didnt stop. his clans member would join to the feast, as if they were transported back in time in the old days of the Omukade, were they lived in caves and mountains, as well as forrest, back in the old days, before the crisis.

As they all indulged in the feast, Koda felt happy about it, and apparently Tso too, as she was seen by Koda catching a deer in the midst of her jumps, snatching the doe mid air, with a jut of blood squirting away from it as the giant centipede took its prey down the earth, sinking with it to eat it in the comfort of the ground.

As for Koda himself, he enjoyed the feast and the livelyness of the situation, seeing his clansmans and woman smile this much was a rare occurence, and he smiled too, happy to see them fulfilling their desires and belleis as well. All was so good, the food was amazing, and the scene was perfect. The adults shared and helped each other to drinks of cold pine wine, of plates of shared foods, acompagnied with jokes and laughters. The childrens where running around, playing in the grass and eating fruits, laughing, skip walking and dancing around as one of the adults played his flute. The elders gathered around in a circle of their own, discussing time of old, enjoying sharps cheeses and traditionnal Omukade bread with oils, reminiscing the stories of their young days, telling the stories of their adventures and the way the world was different. Koda looked around and let every aspect, every sound, every flavor, and every smell of this moment, each second, sink into his mind and heart, filling both with joy.

But, as if everything was too good to be true, Koda heard an explosion in the distance, and as soon as his lifted his head to see what was spanning at the horizon, his eyes were met with an immense flash, blinding him almost immediately, followed by a very hot and boiling wind. As the gale burned his skin and the skin of everyone else, the screams of panic from the others members of the clan could be heard, and Koda tried to reassure everyone, but for a reason he didnt understood, his own speech was as if he had been muted, speaking louder and louder, but without a single sound getting out of his mouth, leaving only the sound of the wind, getting more and more agressive, feeling more and more like a deflagration than a wind. As Koda retrieved his sight bit by bit, he finally could look again with squinting eyes, barelly making what was in the horizon. With a sense of both dread and admiration, Koda saw the now innevitable: It was the biggest explosion he ever saw. It was as if the sun itself descended upon the earth and exploded, radiating with its light all life capable of seeing, and shaking the foundations of the very planet. As Koda looked at the colossal fireball comming towards him, he couldnt speak, nor move, simply paralyzed by the sheer power of this apocalypse. Its as if a hundred millions of hundred millions of explosives tags went up all at once, magnificient, terrifying, pure destruction. Without the capacity to even think more about it, the flames reached Koda and his paradise-like plains, filled with the terrorised clans members and the picnic, and in merely a fraction of a second, everything and everyone, Koda included, were blasted to nothing more than ashes in the suddent and instant inferno following the explosion. With this happening so fast, the large noises of deflagrations and explosions as well as the very air being aflame was instantaneously replaced by the absolute and total silence. In a same maner, the orange bright suroundings instantly faded to the black void, leaving nothing behind, except the conscience of Koda drifting for merely seconds in the void, empty, noiseless.

As Koda woke up in the plains, all sweaty and crying, Tso was alert, seemingly trying to speak to him for a bit of time before he got up.

''KODA ?! what was happening boy? You were screaming and crying, but also smiling in your sleep? Are you okay? Made a bad dream?'' Asked Tso, klicking her mandibles in a manner that Koda understood in his mind.

''Yeah! I just had the wildest dream... I succeeded in making the tribe happy, and was taking in this beautifull moment when suddently the biggest explosion ever occured, as if the art of my tribe itself was its downfall... As much as I was terrorized of it all, I was also at the pinnacle of joy, so impressed by such an explosion and its sheer power that I was paralyzed by the emotion, moved by its magnificience. This, I think is what made me even more terrified, and I scared myself in that moment... The art, the explosions, all of it... I need to use it responsibly, or it could consume me, make me loose my morals to the collateral damages it can do. Anyways, lets not linger here more. Lets get back to the village.'' Would reply Koda, still a bit shaky of the panic of the thing he dreamt. What if those happened for real? What if, in the end, he caused more harm into the world with his gift than good? He tought about those things all along the walk back to the village, ever conscious of his destructives powers.

Before getting to the heart of the village, Koda passed by the compound of his clan, just to check on them to see if his dream had any sense of reality to it. As Tso waited on the doorsteps, Koda walked up toward the villa, and saw something strange but wholesome: his whole clan was at the table, eating as usual in the morning, all of them together, but the food was not prepared by him like it usualy was. It was the feast he envisionned, filled with traditionnal foods of the omukade, ones he hadnt see in years. What a weird thing! He would have to ask them later how and where they found these resources, but for now, more pressing matters where at hands, as there was weirds sounds and chakra presences in the village. Tso followed back Koda and both of them headed toward the hearth of the village.

As they arrived in the village center, they saw weird occurences, as they passed the academy, what seemed to be little greens individuals, looking like small people but clearly creatures. Seeing another ninja from the village fight them with a kunai, Koda joined the frey to help a bit and defend the academy. He then proceed to give Tso a bundle of dozens of explosives tags, and Tso burried underneath the earth. To everyone above, it seemed like nothing happened, but underground, tso was burrowing not deep under the earth, doing serpentine movement under the goblins and releasing one by one the explosive tags into the earth, trailing and filling the ground with explosives papers, before getting out of the ground by seizing one of the little nasty one with her mandibles, gnawing at it whilst it got away from the danger zone. With a swift move, Koda sent another tag, this time lit, into the zone of danger, and with a loud bang, the first paper exploded, starting the chain of large explosions. The bangs were continuous for almost a minute, sounding loudly like oversized fireworks, sending dirt and pieces of burnt flesh everywhere flying, reducing the ground to an absolute battlefield, and with a clusters of big flaming balls and flashes of explosions who could be heard troughout all the village. After the last explosions, nothing of the creatures remained, and a field of smoke was emanating from the turned and cooked earth. Emerging from the smoke of the absolute insane bombing was a small man, Koda, who appeared all polite and calm, a clear contrast to his attack, walking slowly amidst the shatered ground fumming. As he met the others, he saw that Jurei too was there.

''Hey what is going on? I had a strange dream and it seems that now the world is assaulted by weird dreams of the others too? We should secure the childrens right? What are the orders?'' Asked Koda, with his giant centipede at his side, ready to delve into whatever menace the village was facing.

Real Spooky Hours Empty Re: Real Spooky Hours

Sat Nov 11, 2023 5:53 pm
When Jurei arrives at the scene, there are indeed, gremlins, goblins, and all mannerisms of folklore that unabashedly terrorize the children at the academy who flee with reckless abandon through one of the exits out of the academy which quickly clogs up with students. Before she could commit to whatever action she plans to enact, one person hurriedly appears beside her, explaining the assignment given out—presumably from the higher-ups, as this event has no doubt caught their attention—and stating that the incident she saw prior, along with what she's seeing before her, confirm her suspicions that it's no longer isolated and these spawns from wherever recently started propagating with no end in sight.

For now, however, her task, along with her newest acquaintance, is to destabilize the situation at their discretion and minimize any casualties. An evacuation procedure if anything else. Jurei turns her attention back toward the horde of creatures. She takes a deep breath and exhales slowly, closing her eyes for a brief moment. When they reopen, there is a steely resolve within them. It's not long after that her former classmate and recent friend, Omukade Koda, arrives at the scene and beckons the question of what exactly is sitrep right now.

"That's right," She appends, still attempting to process everything that's happened in what felt like only mere moments ago. "We have to act quickly though, the children here are defenseless against whatever creatures of the deep these spawned from. Dispatch any hostiles and evacuate any civilians in the establishment, I'll remain here out in the academy exterior, as my skills be of more use outside than out in an enclosed space. As for what you'll both do is at your discretion, as long as one of you assists in the evacuation process inside the academy interior. Now go! I shall open a path for you, both!"

With a quick flick of her wrist, a senbon reforms from blinking particles from her hand outwards and she throws it at an unsuspecting goblin which immediately undulates and disperses into a fine, black mist upon contact with its head. This action causes the other goblins to turn their attention toward her and the other duo, but she doesn't falter. She throws another senbon at another goblin and when one approaches too closely, she flicks her other wrist, summoning a tanto from another space in time, and arcs the blade diagonally, dispelling the creature. She repeats this process until there's a clear enough path for them to enter through and either one or both of them enter the facility.

If either one chooses to remain, she will assist in warding the entities from the exits utilizing what little Ninjutsu she currently has in her repertoire. Thankfully, they're defensive by and large, so it's merely a matter of managing her diminutive resource pool, and carefully weaving and timing each technique to minimize haphazard waste of her chakra reserves. In due time, they're able to pacify the situation with minimal casualties—most of which were the result of the pure pandemonium caused by the masses and narrowed spatial awareness for the concern of others' physical well-being—although most were superficial at best that could be treated with basic medical ninjutsu or other, more conventional means.

However, this is only the start of what would otherwise be akin to a living nightmare made manifest in the village of Hoshigakure...

{End of "Tear in the Fabric"}

Since the initial day when this all occurred, a few days passed since the initial change of dreams becoming a part of and entering the village. There has been a public service broadcast about being calm and not having wild dreams until a solution to the ongoing issue is discovered and resolved. However, a new predicament has come to make its presence known in the form of children who have begun to develop wild imaginations that bleed into normal society. Specifically, the most serious fear is that one of the children has dreamt himself into a stronghold of some type, proclaiming himself the "Dream King". The fortress itself neighbors the main village parallel to it, decorated in an image similar to that of a castle. It is unknown whether or not this is a result of his imagination or something else entirely, but what is certain is that he needs to be dealt with before he becomes more of a problem than he already is.

Jurei, along with Uzumaki Masashi and Omukade Koda, are tasked with dealing with the issue at hand as follows: rescue the supposed "Dream King" to his respective parents unharmed and deal with any threats from the realm beyond from besieging the village. At present, she's currently on her way to meet up with her squadmates for this mission. She arrives at the meeting spot near the entrance to the village, where she waits patiently for their arrival before they set forth to infiltrate the fortress, assuage the situation, and retrieve the child unharmed from his stronghold. Jurei opts to be a supportive role in the case of whichever chooses to become the spearhead of the operation and infiltrate the fortress in tow while fending against what eldritch entities lurk within.

The process of retrieving the child is cumbersome, to put it lightly, as there are many obstacles that stand in their way. The first obstacle is a creature resembling that of a giant spider with a human-like face. It is unknown if this entity is hostile or not, but regardless of its intentions, it must be dealt with before proceeding any further. Upon defeating the entity, Jurei and her squadmates press onward toward their goal: finding and rescuing the "Dream King" from his self-proclaimed throne room. However, upon entering the throne room, they are met with a sight unlike any other—a child sitting on a throne made of pure gold and surrounded by endless riches beyond comprehension.

He appears to be in a trance-like state with no signs of conscious awareness from him whatsoever. In order to break him from this state, Jurei approaches the child slowly and gently shakes him by the shoulder in an attempt to rouse him from his slumber. When that doesn't work, she tries again but this time with more force behind it until finally, he stirs from his sleep. He looks around confusedly as if he had just awoken from a long nap before realizing where exactly he is at present. He then proceeds to ask them who they are and why they've come here to which Jurei explains what's going on outside in the real world as well as their mission objective for retrieving him back home safely and without any harm coming to either one of them during the process.

The "Dream King"—whose name is actually Hasegawa Nobuatsu—then asks them if they could help him get back home safely too since he doesn't want anything bad happening while he's stuck inside this place forever. Jurei agrees to help him out and tells him that all they have left now is to find a way out of here together. The Nobuatsu nods enthusiastically and says that he knows exactly how to do that. He tells them that there should be a secret passageway somewhere within this castle that leads straight back outside into the real world again, but he doesn't know exactly where it is or what it looks like exactly. Jurei suggests looking around for clues that might lead them in the right direction towards finding it. Eventually, after some searching around here and there throughout the entire place,  they finally find something worthwhile enough worth mentioning about it being close by and exfiltrate from the fortress before its very essence returns from whence it came.

Another crisis averted, with only a soft serving of a multitude more heading their way in the future.

{End of "Questioning Reality"}

The coming days thereafter served as only precursors to more nefarious creations and hellspawn from the intangible world yonder. Firstly, sensory shinobi in the vicinity have identified an abnormality and have sought assistance in conducting an early inquiry into the possibility of sealing the anomaly. There are questions regarding the underlying cause, but many believe that the strangeness of dreams attaining a degree of creation in Hoshigakure is related to this abnormality. Some speculate that it is a fissure or a gate of some type, while others believe it is a creature that someone with a wild imagination created and is now causing difficulties within the Land of Haven.

Ryoinsatsu Jurei, Omukade Koda, and Uzumaki Masashi are all dispatched into separate cell parties of three in an effort to divide and conquer the odds in several sectors of the Village Hidden in the Stars and maximize their chances of closing as many rifts with as many groups as possible. They are also ordered to gather any information that bears witness to or deduce along the way to ascertain the nature of these rifts. Nevertheless, the sectors are divided as follows:

Masashi's party is comprised of himself, a sensory shinobi named Ito Hanae (伊藤花恵), and a genjutsu specialist named Ueda Yuki (上田雪). Their first objective is to investigate a reported sighting near the outskirts of Hoshigakure where erratic behavior has been noted by several civilians. They will be responsible for the eastern sector.

Koda's party is comprised of himself, a sensory shinobi named Okada Rie (岡田梨恵), and an earth-style specialist named Tachibana Saki (橘咲). Their first objective is to investigate an incident that occurred at a local shrine in which a man was reportedly consumed whole after falling into a well that had suddenly appeared. They will be responsible for the northern sector.

Finally, Jurei's party is comprised of herself, a sensory shinobi named Nagano Keiji (長野圭司), and a wind-style ninjutsu specialist named Ikeda Akira (池田明). Their first objective is to investigate unexplained injuries and deaths that occurred at the hospital. Jurei will be responsible for the western sector.

With the formalities out of the way, they're immediately dispatched, effective post-debriefing, toward their designated zones. In the case of Jurei's party, their travel toward the hospital takes only a few minutes—intercepting creatures of varying dispositions along the way to allow the common folk to retreat all the while—enter the hospital, and immediately analyze the situation. The first thing they note is that there is no one in sight except for themselves. They then proceed further into the hospital until they reach a room where a woman lies unconscious on a bed with severe burns covering most of her body. Jurei asks Keiji if he can tell what caused these injuries and he replies that it seems like she was burned by something extremely hot. He also adds that it looks like whatever burned her was also able to cause internal damage as well judging by the amount of blood present in some places around her body.

Jurei nods and tells him to keep looking around while she goes to check up on another patient nearby who appears to be in a similar condition as this woman. She walks over to the next room where another woman lays on a bed with severe burns covering most of her body just like the other one. However, unlike the first woman, this one is still conscious and appears to be in a lot more pain than the other one was earlier. She asks Jurei if she can help her out somehow but Jurei shakes her head saying that there isn't much they can do for her right now except try to make sure she doesn't die from these wounds before someone else comes along who might be able to heal them properly or at least lessen her pain somewhat.

Jurei then asks Ikeda Akira what he thinks about all this and he replies that it seems very strange indeed considering how similar both these women are in terms of injuries as well as where they received them from which makes it even stranger because usually when things happen like this people tend to get hurt in different ways depending on what caused them so why would two people get hurt by something exactly the same way? He also adds that he doesn't know what could've caused this either since there aren't any signs of fire anywhere nearby nor does it seem like anything else burned them either so it must've been something completely different than what normally happens when people get burned.

It appears whatever is being caused this is capable of mimicking the heat element of fire to an indiscernible extent and is capable of burning its victims past the intradermal and delivering varying burn degrees internally. The question now is, how? The party continues their investigation into the matter and finds a few is causing these burns since there doesn't seem to be anything around here that could possibly help them figure out what exactly happened here or even where it came from in the first place which means they'll just have no choice but try their best not to let themselves get hurt too badly while trying to find out where it came from and how to put a stop to it before anyone else gets hurt either.

Ikeda Akira replies that he doesn't know either but he thinks they should probably start looking around for clues as soon as possible because if this continues happening then more people might end up dying because of whatever caused this so they really need to find out what's going on here before anything else happens. Jurei agrees with him and says that she'll go check out another room while he keeps looking through this one since there might be something important in there that might help them figure out what happened earlier today. She walks over to the next room where a swirling nebula of iridescent hues, with tendrils of shadow and ethereal light interwoven in an intricate dance. Its form is ever-changing, a surreal kaleidoscope that defies mortal comprehension.

Although the entity itself hasn't acknowledged her existence, or may very well be ignoring her presence entirely, there's an instinctual proclivity for Jurei to run away as far as she can from it. It's almost like she can feel its malevolence emanating off of it in waves, washing over her like a tsunami threatening to drown her beneath its weight. She knows deep down in her soul that if she were to get any closer than this then something horrible would happen to her. Amid her internal panic, the amorphous figure shifts its ungodly form toward the kunoichi, and her mind is immediately assailed by incorrigible whispers in languages she's never heard of before and knowledge so expansive that it threatens to shatter what sanity remains within her. During all this, only one word makes an ounce of sense in this sea of madness:

"Zythraalix."

The entity's form begins to contort violently, its features warping into a grotesque parody of itself. Its limbs elongate into gnarled tendrils that writhe and twist around each other in a macabre dance while its torso distends unnaturally as if someone had taken a knife and cut open its belly only to find nothing inside but darkness. The creature lets out a deafening roar as it lunges towards Jurei with terrifying speed. The swarthy kunoichi relinquishes all reasoning and lets her body's reflexes take control of the situation as soon as its tendrils start to writhe and slither. Weaving the following hand seals in rapid succession with one hand: Bird → Monkey → Ox → Snake, she summons clouds of gold powder which coalesce into gold shields and chains, which then completely surround the user in a spherical orb with a 10-meter radius. The claws that would've otherwise raked and sundered her flesh connect with the golden barrier and chains instead, unable to reach her.

She feels her heart pounding in her chest as adrenaline floods through her veins, every fiber of her being screaming at her to flee from this place before it's too late. But she stands firm against the onslaught of attacks from this creature despite knowing full well how futile such an action would be if she were to try fighting back against it directly. Jurei opens the fourth quadrant directly south of her, hollers to her teammates that she's made contact with what otherwise is their culprit, and suggests they send for sealing specialists to come and detain the beast while she holds the fort.

Jurei greatly underestimates the entity's strength as it easily shatters the golden barriers and chains, leaving her completely exposed and vulnerable to its assault. She tries desperately to dodge out of the way but finds herself unable to move fast enough due to how close she is to this thing now. The creature lunges at Jurei once more with terrifying speed, its claws tearing through the air where she had been standing just moments earlier. She manages to roll out of the way just in time but not without sustaining a searing sensation rake across her abdomen from one of its many tendrils. And although no open wound is apparent, the damage inflicted upon her is evident enough of the attack's connection.

Keiji and Akira are immediately notified of this development and rush over as quickly as possible to assist their teammate before things get any worse than they already have. Jurei continues dodging attacks left and right as best she can while trying to keep herself alive long enough for backup to arrive, weaving more hand seals to stymie the unrelenting assault from the entity. Then, she discovers something shocking. When executing the following hand seals: Tiger → Hare, a rectangular wall of earth and mud erupt before her before the entity attack could strike at her, hearing the gnawing gash connect with the earth. Thereafter, there's a brief pause, which worries the kunoichi until a rectangular section of black and white threads envelop a section of the earthen wall and dematerializes it entirely.

Jurei is completely dumbfounded by what just happened but doesn't have time to think about it too much because she needs to focus on staying alive right now rather than figuring out why her jutsu suddenly disappeared like that without warning or explanation whatsoever. She continues dodging attacks left and right, and entering and exiting connected hallways and rooms as best she can while trying not to get hurt too badly in the process until the cavalry arrives to placate the entity in a String Light Formation.

The entity is completely ensnared by the intricate, black scrawls, unable to break free no matter how hard it struggles against them. It lets out another deafening roar as it tries desperately to escape but finds itself unable to move even an inch due to the sheer amount of pressure being applied upon its body by these things surrounding it on all sides now. Jurei breathes a sigh of relief knowing and receives an impromptu medical examination from her teammates before being sent home for rest and recuperation after such a harrowing experience earlier today, and a subsequent report of her findings is recorded and logged to the administration facility as to the nature of the entity in custody that same day.

As for the following days thereafter, are no less strenuous to her, both physically and psychologically.

Sometime later during the week…

A letter arrives at the Ryoinsatsu household, specifically for Jurei and her associates at the academy for the first time, for what could be the resolution to the seemingly never-ending chaos of these cosmic bodies entering between the barriers of reality and fiction. According to the intelligence agency from the village's sensory shinobi, they'll task her, Omukade Koda, and Uzumaki Masashi with taking a more direct approach to deal with whatever is on the offensive. The briefing is as follows: a four-man cell will attempt to directly traverse through the Land of Dreams and confront the entities from within in an attempt to vanquish and hopefully banish any more rifts from creation or currently in operation. However, there's the inherent risk that stragglers may find themselves drawn toward these sleeping shinobi and attempt to venture into our world to savagely eviscerate those on standby. Volunteers are welcome to attempt the jump, but only a maximum entourage of four may do so at any given time and will be conducted in an isolated area, away from the main village toward the outskirts.

The mission is simple enough, but Jurei can't help but feel apprehensive about it because she's aware of the rumors of what happened last time when they tried something similar with another platoon and failed miserably because of their lack of preparation beforehand. Still, she knows better than to question her superiors' decisions so she'll just have to trust them on this one for now until further notice from them comes through. When she arrives, understanding her lack of offensive capabilities in adequately repelling the beasts from the void's veil, she volunteers to be among the sleepers to sunder what tethers the rifts of the current world.

Sometime later…

Jurei awakens in a strange place, surrounded by darkness and misty fog obscuring her vision in all directions save for directly ahead of her where she sees a figure standing before her. The figure is shrouded in shadow and appears to be quadrupedal with long spindly limbs extending outwards from its body like spider legs while its head hangs low between its shoulders as if it were hunched over slightly. It's difficult to make out any details beyond these basic shapes because of how dimly lit this room appears to be but Jurei knows enough already that whatever this creature is, it isn't friendly so she needs to be prepared for anything when dealing with it.

She begins by taking a few steps back away from the entity before reaching into one of her pockets for something that might help her defend herself against whatever attack comes next but finds nothing there except an empty pocket. In response to the sudden movement, the four-legged creature lunges at Jurei without warning and engages in an intense bout of supremacy over the other. Throughout the fight, Jurei's edge over the creature wanes as it attacks, although she may dodge them, land regardless, and each time they do, she feels a searing pain shoot through her body as if someone had just stabbed her with a hot iron poker.

The creature continues attacking relentlessly until finally, it manages to land a blow squarely against Jurei's chest which knocks her off balance causing her to stumble backward onto the ground where she lies motionless on her back for several seconds before slowly getting back up again trying desperately not to pass out from the sheer amount of pain coursing through her veins right now.

"How... is it reaching me even when I dodge its attacks? This isn't making any sense..." And that's when it clicks for her. "Wait... dreams rarely make any sense at all. And if that's the case, the reality of it hitting me isn't contingent upon anything sound or abiding by natural laws... but by its own laws put in place in this dreamscape, instead. So, I can't dodge them because they're not physical objects or forces—they're mental constructs that only exist inside our heads!"

Equipped with this realization, she quickly formulates a plan and bends the reality of the dreamscape to her will in ways that defy the natural order of things. When a strike would otherwise be fatal to her, it simply phases through her. When she returns a blow with another, she imagines the space through which the strike takes place is larger than it actually is. And when the beastie creates distance between them, she imagines the space already closed in to press the assault. In this manner, Jurei carves out a victory from the entity's grasp and slays it.

The next thing she knows, she awakens in a cold sweat, panting heavily as if she'd just run a marathon or something equally exhausting but at least now she feels safe knowing that whatever happened before wasn't real after all thanks to some quick thinking on her part during that fight earlier today. She looks around and notices that everyone else is busy at work repelling the entities that bled through a rift that once hovered overhead and has now since disappeared and aids the remaining units in stymying the flow of aggressors from the remaining three other rifts. Until the last trio of fissures close up, it's only a matter of cleanup duty before the squad resigns and reports their success to their respective facility.

And what better way to conclude this series of misadventures than with a celebratory dinner among friends? Jurei invites her teammates, Omukade Koda and Uzumaki Masashi to join her for some sushi and sake at a local izakaya after their mission concludes for the day. It was an exhausting experience but also quite rewarding as well because they managed to save many lives today without losing any members of their team during this operation either which is always good news considering how dangerous these missions can sometimes be when dealing with unknown variables such as these entities.

Real Spooky Hours Empty Re: Real Spooky Hours

Tue Nov 14, 2023 12:25 pm
As Masashi and the young kunoichi were dealing with the goblinoids at the academy, they were joined by another young shinobi. They were quite young, with much paler than he had. They also had dark brown hair and bright orange eyes. An odd combination, but it wasn’t the strangest thing that Masashi had seen. They were wearing a teal tunic over top of black pants and was accompanied by a large centipede. It appeared that the newcomer and the young kunoichi knew each other, for the face of the girl displayed at least recognition. Perhaps acquaintances, definitely too much of an age disparity to be classmates. It was hard to tell with him having not been paying attention to the goings on of the village for the last couple years. Ah well, he had no one but himself to blame for that. In any event the Uzumaki Jounin needed to be focusing on the task at hand. The young shinobi had approached the dark-skinned kunoichi, who started issuing orders as if Masashi hadn’t already just done that, being the ranking shinobi on scene. The Uzumaki Jounin chuckled and shrugged as he went back to what he was doing. He’d make sure nothing would happen to them, and if something did, he had medical ninjutsu to handle even death itself. Not that he was worried that either of the other two would die, but one could never be too careful in a hostile situation. She had some interesting abilities, that was for sure, but he wasn’t really paying attention to what she was doing to them, more making sure that they weren’t doing anything to either of them.

No one else showed up to help by the time they had finished clearing out the academy, and it looked like there were no more of the goblinoid creatures appearing, so it was safe to think that the danger had passed for now. They weren’t receiving any other reports of new creatures popping up either, so the potential danger to the village seemed to have ended and it would be safe to say that this mission was a success. The handful of individuals that had minor injuries were treated at the Academy and then sent on their way. Masashi looked around the area once more, satisfied in how well the three of them had handled the situation. “Good work everyone,” he said to the other two that had helped. “I’ll head out and file our report on what happened here.” With that he would head off towards the Unseen University to fill out a mission report and make sure that the Hogokage was informed on what had transpired at the Academy. He wasn’t the only one there for the same reason; other Jounin and Chuunin squad leaders were also here doing the same thing. Masashi found a quiet corner to write up his report, sparing no details in terms of what happened. It was likely an isolated incident, but it didn’t hurt to be prepared. Once the report was handed in, Masashi would make his way back home to de-stress after the events of the day, and hope that this was the last of it. The trip home was uneventful, nothing else weird happened, at least nothing on the way back. He went inside, enjoyed a dinner that he knew his staff had made for him and turned in early. He could use a good rest after all that. Perhaps now things could go back to normal for the village. Turns out he would be very wrong about it being a singular event.

It would turn out to be a nightly occurrence now; creatures and nightmare spawn would show up every night. Not as many as the initial incursion at first, simply because people had already developed a hesitation towards dreaming for fear of spawning abominations by accident, but there was still more than there should be. It would seem that while more of the adult population were able to manage, the village’s children were less successful at keeping their sleep dreamless. Masashi was trying to come up with some form of sleep aid that would assist with providing a dreamless sleep but so far his initial attempts weren’t providing any successful data, almost as if something was affecting the data, he just couldn’t put his finger on it. His research was interrupted at one point as his services were required on a mission to deal with a child that had apparently dreamed up a fortress out of the ether and was holed up inside and not coming out. The child’s parents wanted him returned unharmed. The fact that had been stated irked the Uzumaki Jounin. As if he would allow a child of the village to die on a mission that he was a part of. Of course, he would do what he could to make sure that the child was returned to his parents safe and sound, and likely they wouldn’t have made such a requirement pertinent to the mission if they were aware he would be involved. He was one of the village’s foremost and well-known medical experts. He would make his way in the direction of the main gate. The fortress that this child was inside of was outside the village, close enough that you could touch the walls of it from the village walls themselves, and made of imposing basalt stone. Towers, and other defensive structures surrounded the building to give it an air of impenetrability. By the time he had arrived, he was joined by two others, the Genin from the last mission he was assigned to. Without any further waiting, the trio entered the fortress of the ‘Dream King’ to find them, find out what was wrong, fix whatever it happened to be, and return the child to their parents.

The first obstacle that the trio encountered was a large spider with a humanoid head. There was no way to tell from the outset whether or not anything in the fortress would be friendly or hostile, so the only option that Masashi would entertain would be to eliminate anything between them and the child. Without waiting for the other two to make a move, Masashi would draw a pair of Kunai and dash at the creature, slashing at legs and stabbing it in vital areas to take it out as quickly as possible. The spider went down relatively quickly under the assault. Perhaps the child’s imagination that willed it into being wasn’t strong enough to make it a significant challenge. With a shrug, the Uzumaki Jounin and the other two would press onwards though the fortress. They would run into nothing else as they moved to the center of it all, where it made most logical sense for the throne room to be.

When they entered the throne room, they saw the child sitting on a golden throne, surrounded by the riches of several nations. He was clearly catatonic, asleep sitting up in the chair. It didn’t look like a natural sleep, at least not one that Masashi had seen before. The dark-skinned kunoichi from the last mission walked over to the kid to try and wake them up. Her first attempt was not successful, Masashi simply observed from one side, to see if he could pick up some additional information. The second time she tried to wake him up, she used more force than before and that seemed to do the trick. He woke up confused, unaware of his surroundings. The Kunoichi explained the situation to him, what was happening here as well as inside the village, and what their mission was. The kid introduced himself as Nobuatsu Hasegawa and said that he wanted to go home, typical reaction of a kid that is in an unfamiliar environment. He mentions that they need to find a secret passage out as the way they came in would not suffice as a way out. A rather bothersome predicament to be sure. Shame none of them were sensory experts or this would be easy. It took them a little time, and a fair amount of investigation to find a passageway hidden behind a bookshelf. It had required a combination of books to unlock the door and allow it to move to one side for them to get out.

Once outside, the fortress immediately de-materialised. Clearly a good sign, so the Uzumaki Jounin and his Genin companions would escort the tired child home to his parents so that they could look after him. Masashi would let the pair return to whatever it was they were doing before this and he would turn in the mission report and head back home to his lab to keep trying to find some substance that could help reduce the amount of dreams that people were having for the time being at least. He felt like he should be making more progress than he was, but no matter what he did, it seemed like once again, his efforts were being mitigated somehow. He had no reasonable explanation for why he felt this way, and it’s not like he was working on a conventional problem. He would take a break from the work and get some rest, as he was sure the following few days would only be getting worse if the last few were any indication.

The next few days were indeed steadily seeing a deteriorating situation in the village. There was some updates, so it wasn’t all bad. They discovered physical manifestations all over the world, including a handful of them here in Hoshi. Rather than be assigned to the same three-person squad as the last previous missions, Masashi was assigned to another pair of shinobi. It made sense as they needed at least one sensory expert to help try and locate these manifestations so they could at least be dealt with properly. Each group had been given an area to investigate; Masashi’s was near the Eastern outskirts of the village, while the other two would be investigating events in the northern and western sections of the village respectively. Once they had been given their assignments, the groups split off to their assigned areas to deal with containment. There were a handful of abominations on the path that the three shinobi were able to deal with easily enough before they arrived at the area where the disturbance was supposed to be. Hovering in the air appeared to be some form of distortion in real space. They approached cautiously, examining the manifestation from as many possible angles as they could before formulating a plan. With Masashi being an expert fuinjutsu user, he would attempt to seal the rift. The Uzumaki Jounin decided that a seven-point sealing formular would be required here, so he started laying out the formula. It took him a little time placing the seals and supporting linework while the other two made sure that nothing approached or disturbed him or his seals. It wasn’t much longer that he was able to finish his preparations and proceeded to activate the seals to try and close the rift. It didn’t work immediately; the forces in the center of the seal were actively trying to prevent it from being closed. Masashi was not to be denied though, he simply pushed more chakra into the seal and the rift slowly began to close. In a last-ditch effort, the rift created several hostile entities to attack Masashi and his allies, but they were dealt with in short order without disruption to the work that was going on. Masashi was eventually able to close the rift and seal it away into a scroll, he wanted to be able to study the phenomenon. Perhaps it would provide him with the reasoning for why his other work was running into such problems and delays. With that rift dealt with, their group would head back to the village. He would have to wait to hear how the other two ended up going. Masashi would send off his mission report and head home to figure out what he could do with this sealed rift. Maybe he’ll finally get the answers he was needing to be able to make that sleep aid, that would definitely be a thorn in the side of whatever all of this was.
