Kozai was not too happy with Amegakure anymore. Much like Iwa, it was filled with people who weren't as they seemed. Then again, any new place would seem deceptively better than his home village. After all, the old adage went "the grass is always greener on the other side." Well, there wasn't much grass here. It was extremely urbanized, and that was an aspect that Kozai neither liked nor dislike. The fact that there wasn't much grass meant not many plants for Kozai to draw water from. However, the presence of buildings meant a sewer system that he could draw from, so that was fine by him. He was bored here anyways, but he needed to wrap things up with Arcanis. Kozai had already seen the sights of this village, so he wondered what else awaited him.
Today, he decided, he would explore the mundane and build his strength again. Well..... what were mundane locations in Iwa that he liked to go to? Ah.... the library. Kozai would like to do some research, as well, on what the kage here was all about. So, he got up from his spot in the alleyway and created a disk of water. Stepping on to said disk, he floated up out of the alleyways while keeping the water off of himself. He flew at about half of his maximum speed over the city until he spotted a directory. He landed, and looked at the map. Well.... there was the library, on the other side of town. It was too bad that he couldn't just turn his body into water and move through the rain. Well, it didn't matter anyways, he would just have to make do. He reformed his disk of water and flew at maximum speed through the skyscrapers, dodging power cables, rooftops, and advertisement signs. This was quite urbanized indeed, and there was a lot of metal here. He wondered how there weren't any rust problems... or if the kage was awfully good at covering it up. That would make a lot of sense. He landed at the front of the library, and walked in. It was a high-tech, clean affair, and impressed Kozai. The lady at the front stared at him, probably wondering why he was not wet. He simply greeter her and smiled back. It was always pleasurable to see the reactions on the faces of these ignorant townsfolk to see him all nice and dry when they were sopping wet. It was almost ridiculous, but Kozai had some small amount of empathy. He decided to take a look around.
On the third floor were the strictly professional textbooks, being various subjects of history, literature analysis, science, math, geography, and countless others. Kozai frowned; he was sure that at least two of the subjects in that bookcase to the far right were pseudoscience, but you always had to have an open mind. He pulled out a book on contemporary history, and read up. Apparently, Worr Terumi was his real name. Well, not surprising. But a Terumi clan?? Hmm.... he would have to look this up some more. He knew that in his own village of Iwa, the River clan ruled over the village like a gang. But here.... a Terumi clan, hmph. He went to a geneology index and lugged it back to his table. It was a hefty old thing, being accounts of most of the world's clans, including his own. Apparently, one of his distant relatives some hundreds of years ago was a "Haku", some kid who had fought alongside a deadly swordsman in the village of mist, Kirigakure. He shook himself out of his reverie. There was no way that Haku was more powerful than he... was he? Well, never mind that.
Kozai opened the index of geneology, and flipped all the way to "T", which took a very long time. There it was, Terumi. Apparently, one of them had been the old mizukage, which was surprising. It shocked Kozai somewhat to know that the village hidden in mist had such an influence. Well, the clan supposedly had two kekkei genkai, a "lava" and a "boil". Kozai didn't know what "boil" entailed, but he didn't like lava. Such an ultra-hot and freely flowing substance would slice right through his ice. That was quite an uncomfortable feeling, and he would have to be careful for such a thing. So.... "lava" and "boil", huh? He quickly scanned the leader's chakra signature with his mind's eye of kagura, being careful to note the color. In the future, that would tell him if he had to watch out. He looked over the list some more, and then got bored. Filing away all the information he had just learned, he sidled over to the section on biology, microbiology, specifically. He started to lift heavy textbooks. Man, this was like working out, except for the location, of course. He took down a microbiology article journal, and flipped through the pages. The work of the scientists here was truly fascinating, much more so than those pandering fools in Iwa. He found a very interesting article on microsporidia. Apparently, these were little worm-like fungal predecessors that encysted themselves inside cells of their hosts, which included humans. Hmmm.... worms, huh? That would be a very interesting process indeed, if he were to implant someone with worms of any sort. Imagine what sort of effects they would have! Now, if they did more good than harm, then they could even be augmentations of sorts.
Even better, though, was the thought that he could sap life force from people. Worms were parasitic, after all, and it only made sense that way. The more he thought about it, the more appealing the idea became. He soon put the book away (after much grunting and hefting), and pulled out a slightly slimmer pamphlet. It was... on viruses?? Apparently, this was a pamphlet that disregarded chakra and looked at viruses subjectively, without ninja influence. This was the approach that most textbooks took, and Kozai appreciated it. Well, this book mainly focused on virus composition.
For most phage viruses, they were composed of merely a geometric (generally icosahedral) head unit, which was made of various proteins. It housed some kind of genetic material, usually DNA, but RNA was not uncommon. The "neck and legs" of the virus were also composed of protein. Now, a virus integrated DNA into a... INTO HOST CELL'S? Well.... Kozai had an idea... but he couldn't implement it until he got a stronger focus as a ninja. He put the book away, and went downstairs. Hmm... he had been here for a while now, and the sun was in the afternoon position. He looked at the timepiece above the front desk, it was 3:22 in the afternoon. "Great honk! I'd better get going."
Kozai headed out after politely thanking the librarian, and headed out, whistling softly. He had had a good day so far, and nothing was going to spoil it now, and especially not the rain. Kozai, of course, had rested up while in the library, so he was ready to repel water and fly again. He went up in the air, on a platform of water and looked out over the city again. Beyond the city, he saw quite the expanse of jungle. Perhaps he would head there next, there was no telling what he might do now. He soared off to a building top, and surveyed the village. He looked out on the jungle, dubious about what he saw. He knew from looking at a map of the surrounding area that beyond the jungle lay a fetid swamp. The entire area was filled with water, but it was also filled with sickness.
Kozai decided to explore the jungle. He accepted a complimentary bottle of mosquito spray from a guide first, and proceeded down a well-trodden trail. The wildlife here was vastly different from that in Iwa, and it interested Kozai immensely. The sheer number of amphibians here was quite immense. For example, he recognized what looked like a snake, but what was actually an amphibian of the class Apoda, which only looked like a snake. Those things were really interesting, as it, like most amphibians, had a subcutaneous respiratory system. This meant that they breathed and exchanged gas freely through their skin as well as their lungs. Kozai knew that this meant they had to keep moist, which made Ame the optimal environment for them. If their membranes dried out, the gas diffusion in their skin would stop, leaving them deprived of oxygen and suffering from acidosis and hypercapnia in their bloodstreams. So, even evolutionary adaptations had their weaknesses.
Kozai continued onwards, whistling softly. The jungle was somewhat hot, but Kozai was able to cool the mist and sweat that surrounded him with his Yuki bloodline. In this instance, that sure came in handy. He needed to "keep his cool", as the old adage went. He kept up a solid defense of ice and water around him, to kill anything that might come scrambling through the underbrush: the frightened snake, the giant insect, the voracious rat. He needed to keep himself healthy and free of infection, as he would probably be doing a lot of traveling soon.
The path continued to get more and more rugged and less and less beaten until he came to a crossroads. One was a link-up to another trail that lead deeper, and one was a grass and weed-ridden path that led back to the village. What should he choose? He decided to go deeper. If anything went wrong, he could always fly back, his water had become so much faster after he had developed Atosu Korimizu.
This part of the jungle was even more tepid, but as mentioned before, that didn't bother Kozai. He was actually enjoying this walk, even though it was in an area that most civilians probably did not go. He wondered if tourists frequented this spot, and if so, what they did. He hoped they didn't civilize this place anytime soon, as it was a great place for resources. He recognized caocao trees, which he thought was interesting. He would have thought that they grew farther south, but apparently not. Hm, he would love to eat some of those beans someday, with some prior processing, of course. He didn't want to be overloaded with theobromine, that would be bad. His digestive system would probably not be able to handle it at all. Heck, even horses couldn't handle pure caocao straight out of the bean. However, with a little processing, some milk, and a little sugar, it could become a most divine treat. Still, a high caocao concentration was fine by Kozai, as it was an acquired taste for most people, and boy the chunin had acquired it. His tastebuds liked the theobromine as it slid down his throat and stimulated his lungs and heart.... anyways, enough meditating on dark chocolate.
Kozai had reached the edge of the jungle, and a cloud of butterflies parted to reveal a shallow swamp. Kozai leaned against a tree and looked upon the glorious sight.
Now, wetlands are a key part of an ecosystem. Why? Well, wetlands are filled with bacteria and detritovores ready to decompose leftover biomass and return it to the system. This meant a constant cycle of carbon and nitrogen, which gave life to an ecosystem.
Another key fact was that as a result of passing detritus and spare nutrients through bacteria, toxins were often metabolised by said microorganisms, which removed them from damaging the ecosystem and proliferating to large consumer tier animals, such as humans, tigers, and eagles. This kept the system as a whole healthy and free from outside harm, to a certain extent. Kozai thus appreciated wetlands greatly. Also, they were filled with water. He created a disk of water and stepped onto it, then began to float slowly across the waters, observing the animals and plants that were present in the biome. There was weed.... and spiders. Well, these spiders were odd. They used their web to conduct bubbles of air down, kinda like a diver. Indeed, these were diver spiders. Kozai continued onwards, and took a look at some frog eggs. Finding those distasteful, he went to his left. There, he found something VERY interesting. It was the corpse of a man, long dead. However, it was perfectly mummified. This meant that this bog, this swamp.... was a peat bog. The inner soil deprived the surroundings of oxygen, which provided the perfect environment for mummification. Kozai paid his respects and moved onwards. Finding nothing of interest, he raised his water disk above the treeline and looked around. He actually hadn't gone far from Amgakure itself, that was a good thing indeed. He zoomed at maximum speed back into the area. The area being Ame, that is. He would probably have to put off leaving for a while, as there was one more thing he needed to research. He headed back to the library, and apologized to the desk attendant for coming back so soon. He went up and looked up Near, the Tsuchikage. The River clan.... it was like an organized crime gang, highly ambitious and arrogant. And they specialized in wind and lightning jutsu.... it made sense to Kozai. After all, their clan element was Thunder. But wind... he flashbacked to the tornado that Near had created against him. Could Kozai overcome that now? He most likely could. Perhaps he could even kill the arrogant Near.... Kozai shook his head, clearing rebellious thoughts from his mind. Why would he do that? Other than Near's unwillingness to give missions to his ninja, there wasn't much Kozai could pin on him..... well, there was his pride. But that was more of a personal fault than one he could use to rebel.
He decided to go to the section on.... wait... its was getting late. So, Kozai headed out of the library, thanking the attendant again. He had been glad for this trip, as he had learned a lot. Still, he knew nothing of Worr Terumi's actual personality, nor of Near's true motives. Those he would have to discern for himself, of course, but he still wanted to know very badly. He passed by the kage tower again, and looked up at the wreckage. Hmm.... maybe he would have skip this trip. He needed to see other villages as well, and go home to report to Lord Near. He wanted to get a feel for his surroundings (and meet new ninja) before going onwards. The more places he visited, the more alive and complete he felt, and the stronger he became. He was glad he had come here. A cawing of birds didn't interrupt Kozai in his thought.
He just needed to find a better place to sleep. So, he went and found a beggar shelter area. Welfare shelter, huh? It was even indoors, which was pleasant. Now, Kozai wouldn't have to stay up all night focusing to keep the rain off him.
He went for a last walk before he turned in for bed. He could never see the stars, as they were obscured by rain clouds. He knew that this rain was filled with the kage's chakra, but that didn't even matter to Kozai. He was able to keep the rain off him anyway. He wished that he could see the stars though, the little spheres of plasma in the sky were interesting and entertaining at the same time. Sooner or later though, Kozai gave up and went in for a shower and bedtime.
