Building a small army [solo]
Wed Jun 11, 2014 1:10 am
Angel had built her first puppet. She found it was a powerful tool in battling enemies. Denial was a huge asset to her arsenal. But he required a lot effort on her part to wield so she would design a new puppet that was easier to wield. The puppet would be normal size...well for normal people. It would still be a couple feet taller than her at approximately 5'9". The puppet would be humanoid enough to disguise as a person. It was a simple process. It required 2 arms 2 legs a torso and a head. Simple enough but Angel would have to gather the parts to put it together. She went to the local shop and purchased all the parts she would need. She bought them in bulk that way she could make multiple puppets or would have spare parts just in case. She knew how easy it was to go through the parts and she also knew that if she didn’t work carefully she would lose parts to being carless. While at the shop Angel saw a boy run past stealing a mechanical leg. Angel grabbed him by the shoulder and grabbed the leg as well. The boy just looked at her sadly. Angel looked up and saw a small girl across the street. She had crutches and she was missing a leg. The boy was trying to get a leg for the girl. Angel felt sorry for him and purchased her the leg. She chatted with the shop keepers that she hadn’t seen in a while then headed home. The part she had bought was so heavy and many that Angel had to purchase a cart as well to get the parts back to her house for construction. On her way home she met a few people all of them seemed to be confused at such a small girl pushing such a large cart of supplies. She Smiled and explained to anyone who asked that she was working on a project. But in the end she finally got home. “How am I going to get all this stuff into the basement?” Angel wondered aloud. “Eh I suppose I could go work at the training field. I seem to put in productive work over there.” Angel began to push the cart again heading for her second favorite place to work. But she had a lot of work to do so she tried to pick up her pace. Arriving at the training field she went to the back corner again. She liked this corner because the breeze and the shade were perfect here. It was secluded and it gave her a chance to work in peace while still being able to observe the field. She considered taking the day off to just play, but she shook her head. She was a chunin now. If she didn’t get her tools and weapons ready for battle then she could be killed. She didn’t want that. She took the back of the cart down and began to unload the parts spreading them out on a large patch of well-kept grass. The very small parts she laid on a blanket. She spent a lot of time just sorting the parts. When she finished she looked over all the parts. It reminded her of when she had put her first puppet together. Denial had been a complicated puppet but it was also very powerful. Her designs for this puppet were to be expendable. She could build them in bulk, as well as repair them easily. The parts were generic and the tools were simple. She didn’t use any of the defensive materials she used on Denial. These puppets in fact were meant to move swiftly in between the gaps of her guard.
First things first. Angel would put together the head of the puppet. She had decided to work with a different material than she was used to. The store she bought it from had advertised it as being just as sturdy as the other puppet parts, but half the weight. She thought she would test that first before devoting the entire project on the say so of a sales man. Luckily she had purchased an extra amount of the material. It was indeed lighter than what she had been working with. Upon doing various tests, it seemed that the material was sturdy. But when testing resistances it didn’t hold up well against heat. It did however provide a decent resistance to electrical current. It would be decent enough she guessed. The Head of the puppet would be primarily this compound as well was mechanical parts and for added cosmetics Angel would add rubber tubing that would fill out the neck to look similar to that of a persons. Angel gathered the parts and got to work. The alloy she was using was really easy to mold so crafting the face of the puppet was fairly easy. She added in a glass representation of the human eye. She gave it form and attached it to a ball that she would implant into the mechanical skull allowing the puppet to simulate human eye movements. The face plate being done Angel began to work on the very basic construction of the head parts. She allowed for eye movements as well as mouth movement to have the puppet act like it was speaking. Testing how the mechanic worked she was happy with it as a whole. She tightened the screws setting the face plate and attached the tubing to the neck section having it attach similar to the way the neck muscles did. Angel examined the finished head testing every aspect once more. Being thorough was an important skill and Angel made sure she had that talent. Even in her tests in the academy she had always checked her answers multiple times to make sure she didn’t miss anything. This was a little different being in this case it could get her killed. When she was satisfied she set the head down and got to work on the next one. This on proved more troublesome. The glass eyes didn’t want to sit right. So Angel had to modify the design to allow the eyes to work properly. But that was the only problem she encountered. She set about construction the remaining heads making a total of 6. The work was long and tedious but angel stuck to it. Soon enough the sun began to set and angel knew she had to head home for the night. She would have to pick up where she left off tomorrow. She had completed 6 puppet heads and she still had supplies for more but she wanted to make sure she had enough supplies to finish the rest of the puppets’ bodies. Upon arriving home Angel stored the cart and headed inside tomorrow she figured she would work on the torsos.
The next day it was raining. Angel liked the rain even as much as she loved the feel of the earth under her feet. It was cool and refreshing, just as the earth was warm and comforting. But unfortunately it was not possible to go to the training field. After a great deal of effort Angel was able to gather the supplies from the cart down into the basement of her house where she had a workstation set up. This part of the work was going to be very basic as she was making the torsos of her puppets today. This was easy but because it was the largest part of the puppet is was going to be tedious and difficult because of her size. But she worked hard tackling the project. She even brought the radio down from upstairs and turned on her favorite channel listening to the J-Pop music as she guided her beetles into the crevices of the torso wiring. The Torso was complicated. She dragged a large piece down layering it before returning it to its original position she did this for the 6 plates in the upper cavity. The lower cavity was a bit different. It wasn’t much more than a spinal column connecting the rib like upper torso to the hip joints. The column was reinforced and the wires that ran through it were protected by the column. 2 hydraulic pistons and rubber tubing added around the column provided the puppet with the ability to bend and twist in the lower torso section. The hip section was another project. The hip piece was nothing more than a couple ball joints to connect to the legs the sockets hiding connectors for the wiring. Her insects however found a wiring discrepancy in the ribcage section of the torso. Editing the design and allowing the insects to make the necessary fix on this puppet she continued her work. The torso still needed the shoulder joints and connectors applied to it. The shoulders were very important. As likely the puppet would be using weapons and its arms all of the power would be derived in the shoulder. It was important to get this right. If she didn’t the arms would be ripped from the shoulders under the strain of its actions. She tightened the shoulder plates and braced the shoulder using plates on its back much like shoulder blades. She connected the shoulder to the ball socket that would hold the arms in place. It really wasn’t a hard design. Quite simple in fact. It was just tedious because if was so fragile. Unfortunately for this go around she wasn’t able to afford the defensive plating or mesh cavlar that she was able to put into denial. Angel looked over the where denial sat by watching his brothers be born. Well technically these would not even compare to her Master piece these were solely to be used as diversions and guerrilla warfare. While the real hero stood center and claimed victory. She smiled at the image of her standing over a hundred enemies that she had defeated. Shaking her head she got back to work.
The arms were next. It was a simple process of constructing the different segments casing the mechanical parts to prevent breaking the puppet as it moved around. Oiling the parts then attaching them together. The other arm was similar but the parts were all mirrored. This would throw most people off. Because of the monotony of the task it was easy to slip up and make one part of the left arm the way you would make that part for the right arm. Angel would be careful and luckily she needed plenty of arms for each. She gathered her beetles to assist her and got started. The first segment was fairly simple it was a rod surrounded by wires that allowed angel to manipulate the puppet with a reduced number of strings. This all sat in the lower casing. The other piece would be attached after she had the arm put together as those pieces also reinforced the joint of the puppet. Angel took a large breath in and sent her beetles over the inside of this first part. Insect helpers were ideal for this kind of work being they were small and could detect errors as well as fix them in the small places that angel just couldn’t reach without taking the whole thing apart. Having something take longer to do being a good thing made no sense in a universe that was governed by physics. It would only make sense if what she was doing was somehow benefiting her depending on how long it took her to do it. The return of her beetles drew her mind from the abstract. The piece was fine with no faults so she proceeded on. Connecting the cables properly she laid out the next part. The arms of these puppets required intricate work with all the wiring and switches. She had made this design so that she could control the entire puppet with the use of a single chakra thread. It was going to be beautiful. She looked at all her supplies. If she was able to build like 6 or 7 of these things they could all wield a weapon and Angel would be able to use them effectively. Since they were so light weight she could have them all whistle around and create an annoyance. Angel was impressed with herself not too long ago she was a simple genin. Now she was ranked up to a Chunin and already working on becoming a Jounin. But she didn’t have any time to think about that. She had to finish these puppets quickly so she could take them out on missions with these she could easily be able to break her opponents. Working on the next segment down, she finally got it up to standard and worked on the elbow joint. The hinge joint would need to support the lashing of the arm in different throwing chopping and pulling movements. Angel constructed the piece studying it carefully. She assembled the parts sticking a couple beetles in the small opening to make sure everything was good. She performed stress tests on the hinge joint to test it’s ready ness and after that passed she attached it to the two swivel joints both to the upper arm and the lower one. She connected the wires and finally the arm pieces. It now needed another stress test allowing all the pieces to work properly. The parts she had gotten were terrible quality but she knew it would have to do. The next part was the hand. Angel ALWAYS put an incredible amount of attention in the hands of her puppets but it also meant that when it came to details and the incredible finesse that puppetry took there was none better than her. The dexterity it took to control an entire puppet with a single finger was more than most people could comprehend. To demonstrate this Angel released her chakra threads to perform the delicate task of assembling the hand piece by piece. The hand contains 27 bones. All of which were part of the hands ability to move in such intricate manners allowing actions like spinning a pencil around your fingers. It was Angel’s attention to detail that gave her puppets the ability to do these things as well. Upon constructing the “bones” she began wiring the fingers and hand “muscles”. She set all this into a hand form with casings protecting the wires and delicate finger joints. When she finished one hand she set to working on the other she finally finished both hands she set it in place. She connected the hands to their respecting wrist joints connecting up all the wires and joint pins. Finally finishing the arms she now needed to put the top casing on the arms. Once that was done she stepped back and viewed her work. It was marvelous. It was time for the finishing touches.
Angel aligned up all the casings in the correct places and fired up her acetylene torch. She had to weld all the parts together. This puppet was not built to come apart at all. Therefore she needed to make sure that it didn’t because nothing was worse than having a puppet fall apart when she didn’t want it to. Angel remembered when she had first built denial she had been practicing with it doing extreme stress tests. At one part it had fallen apart and she was left holding the arms only while poor Denial stood there. Lifeless having been disconnected from its master. However that incident had taught her that if you don’t want it coming off, weld it on. Now she looked at the rest of her parts following the instructions and her very carefully written notes she put together the parts for the remaining 5 puppets. She checked and double checked the puppets for any errors she had made but in the end she had a little bit more than 6 puppets worth of parts. She constructed the remaining 5 and welded all their parts together. She now had 6 puppets. But the puppets were missing a little something. She had a lot of that compound she though hey maybe she would throw it on because it was nice looking. Using it she shaped 6 chest plates 12 fore arm plates and 12 shin plates to put on each of her puppets. She attached the pies and bolted them into place. She then took the puppets outside to practice. Angel was glad that she had a park in her back yard that allowed her to practice with her puppets. She unfurled her chakra threads and picked up each of her new toys. She practiced sending them out and recalling them. It was a very diffe3rent story trying to control 6 simple puppets as opposed to 1 complicated one. She had to learn how to be mindful of all her puppets. Everything mattered every little detail she shot them out and called them back over and over even learned how to have them do advanced maneuvers such as attacking in multiple directions. Hiding in one another’s blind spots and even coop attacks like one puppet throwing another into a sky diving attack she smiled and closed her eyes feeling the ebb and flow of her puppets their weight and speed their movements. She was surprised that she was able to control each one with only one thread. She had built them to be able to do that specifically but she was surprised how well they turned out. Gathering the 6 puppets she laid them side by side and took out a basic scroll. Removing the ink brush she scribed the selling scroll that would hold the puppets until she need them. She wasn’t able to carry around 6 full sized puppets unless she had them walk beside her. That gave her another idea for a jutsu but that was for another time.
