He would not be my superior if I was equally ranked to him, Komori thought. However, this did not matter at the moment. It was about the here and now. It would not matter if he was promoted ten seconds from now, because in the present, Komori was still an underling. He breathed deeply as he answered the question, “I would comply as long as it did not place others in harm’s way.” His face took on a more determined look… quite possibly the last expression it would ever show. “Lives are what matter. There is no point to authority if there is no one to watch over.” Komori’s jaw clenched upon finishing his last statement.

The voice had sat through this ritual many times, always prodding, picking at weaknesses and testing candidates, often highlighting their insecurities. And he had never received as clear an answer as the one this genin provided.

"Do you truly believe that? After all you have done for the chance to sit in this chair?"

“I truly believe that, Lord Raikage.” Komori was not going to back down. Going back on his word would not only make him seem weak and indecisive, but it would make him a liar. His character revolved around the protection of others and he was already past the point of no return, so he would tell the Raikage what he truly thought. “What I have faced… The deaths of those prisoners… What has brought me here today, has only solidified the person sitting before you.”

"Then it appears you truly deserve the rank of chunin. You'll find your paperework has been completed," it was the closest thing to a pat on the back the boy would ever get from his kage.

Light flooded the room revealing a wooden desk with the aforementioned paperwork for Komori to bring to the mission counter but no one else would be in the room.

Komori was shocked when he had discovered that there was no one else there. A bead of sweat dripped down the side of his forehead slowly as the pressure of the situation alleviated. The strapping young lad breathed a deep sigh of relief. Honestly, part of him had been scared that he would have failed, especially considering how he had stood up to the Raikage for what he believed in. But it had all worked out in the end, thankfully. Komori would stand up and grab the paperwork from the wooden desk before him. He would look around, taking in the light of the room and wondering where the disembodied voice had originated from. In the end, however, he tapped the papers against the desk in order to straighten them before giving up in his futile search and walking out the door to file his paperwork.
