chance meeting (P, Kotetsu)

Kotetsu was a Genin now. It was time for him to see exactly what that means for him. He has a sparring match with that exam proctor later, which means he has some time to kill. After visiting the shops to pick up some tools he will doubtlessly need for his sparring session later, he makes his way home. His mother had hinted something to him on his way out the door that morning before he went to the examination. “You are very fortunate Kotetsu. You are a member of the Yuki clan, and the blood of the Yuki flows strong in you. We are naturally skilled with chakra, and we have a natural resistance to the cold. Which is why I have always felt cooler to the touch than your father has. There are ways you can learn to harness the cold to make your chakra more potent. I will explain more when you graduate from the academy.” 

‘Well, now that I’ve graduated I want to find out more about what my mother was talking about’ Kotetsu thinks to himself as he makes his way down the street to his home. He walks in the door and it does not seem like anyone is home. ‘I guess she’s out getting my brother and sister.’ He thinks to himself as he sits down for a few minutes to relax after the long day he has had so far. He hadn’t really considered it so far, but because of his rigorous training, especially in chakra development, he had already trained his body to the point where his Yuki bloodline had fully developed. ‘Oh well, it’s not like I can find out right now anyways.’ He thinks to himself. ‘Now that I’m a Genin, there are a few things I can work on that were a bit beyond me.’ Kotetsu then goes back to the Library to borrow a couple scrolls that he had looked at while he was there. The first one he wanted to look at was a Water sealing and releasing technique, that allowed him to store water in a scroll and summon it forth at a moment’s notice. This would be useful in areas where there isn’t much in the way of water to begin with. Scroll in hand he made his way to the general training grounds in order to use the water on site. When he got there, he noticed he wasn’t the only one here working on a technique. Kotetsu nods briefly at the other shinobi before sitting on the ground and pulling out a pair of blank scrolls, some ink, a quill brush, and one of the scrolls he borrowed from the library. Being careful to copy the diagram perfectly into the blank scrolls.

If uninterrupted in this process, he will make his way over to the nearest water source on the training grounds and will attempt to store water within the scrolls.

Kotetsu noted in his periphery that the other boy was following him over to the pond. While he did not notice whether he was wearing anything identifiable, it’s highly unlikely a shinobi of another village would be allowed to casually roam the area without some form of escort. Kotetsu would shrug and not think much of it. The boy was speeding up to almost try and catch up to him, which Kotetsu had no problem with. It did not look like they were going to cause any issues. As he reached the pond, the other shinobi caught up to him and made a remark about the oncoming weather. Clearly a shinobi from the Hoshi headband they wore. Kotetsu pondered the offhand comment for a moment. “I’d never considered halting training because of rain, to be honest.” It was true rain never bothered him, most likely because of his lower body temperature. The shinobi introduced himself as Cole, and held out his fist as an offer of greeting. Kotetsu normally shook hands with someone when he first meets them, but he reciprocates the gesture with a response of “Kotetsu is my name. Nice to meet you Cole.” With that, Kotetsu would open one of the scrolls, open it up and toss it onto the top of the pond. He would then walk out onto the water after it, start to gather his chakra, make two hand signs (Dog. Rat.), and stop on the seal to try to move the water into the scroll. It does not look like the jutsu worked properly at first, but if one had sharp enough eyes, they would see that the scroll didn’t start sinking, and it would seem that a small current would appear, drawing to the scroll itself from all directions. Calling over his shoulder, Kotetsu would direct a question at Cole. “What brings you to the training ground today, Cole?”

Assuming Cole answers, Kotetsu will stay as is until the scroll stops drawing in water, at which point he will pick up the scroll, roll it up, then repeat the process with the second scroll he had prepared, albeit facing Cole this time.

Kotetsu chuckles, a subtle joke that he associated with Cole’s choice of words, since his reasoning for picking up the sealing technique would play into his primary strength, which will be creating Ice. But if there is nothing to create Ice from, it never hurts to have something on hand in order to help in that regard. “It’s a very simple technique really.” He says to Cole. “The diagram allows me to seal water into the scroll for use at a later time. Whether it be for a water style user to manipulate, a lightning user to use in conjunction with their own jutsu, or even to have safe, potable water to drink in a hazardous environment. Right now this is just for me to practice using the sealing technique.” Kotetsu finishes sealing water into the second scroll and picks it up, slipping them into one of his pouches as Cole explains why he’s spending time at the training ground. ‘A fairly common practice.’ Kotetsu thinks to himself. “Coincidentally, that’s the reason I am here too, to a degree. My parents wanted to talk to me about my heritage and what it means for me in regards to my skills as a shinobi, but they are out doing something. Honestly, I think I stumbled over what they meant myself, but I won’t know for sure until I speak to them. So I figured I would work on something else in the meantime.”

Kotetsu makes his way out of the pond as Cole makes the offer to spar. ‘That’s two in one day. I can use all the combat experience I can get though, plus it would be good to learn what abilities my peers have in case we end up in a battle together.’ He thinks to himself before responding. “I would definitely be interested. I do have an engagement later on, so I don’t think I will be able to spar for an extended period though.” With that, Kotetsu would follow Cole back to the training ground proper, taking stock of all he had available in terms of jutsu and ninja tools. It would be hard to predict how the fight would go, the other boy’s techniques and overall abilities are an unknown. Kotetsu would assume that he is at a disadvantage and take that into account. ‘I will engage in hit and run tactics primarily for now, get a feel for how he attacks and watch for patterns.’ Once they get to a specific spot in the field, Kotetsu would stop and take a few minutes to stretch properly before assuming a basic taijutsu stance. “I am ready when you are, Cole.” He says calmly to the other boy his face giving away nothing.

The attack was faster than he expected. Kotetsu wasn’t sure if that was boosted by jutsu, or if this shinobi was that much faster than he was. He was also holding a weapon now for the few seconds he could see him as he dashed towards him. The weapon though did not look like it was made of metal though, which gave Kotetsu a couple ideas as to what he was dealing with. That did not bode well for him. Most of the clans that came to mind relished in close combat. He was fast for a  Genin fresh out of the academy, but he wouldn’t hold up to a skilled Genin especially in their own element. And Cole was already on top of him with that weapon, aimed at the side of his head. Since it wasn’t aimed for the centre of his head, he would turn sideways so his face was facing where the sword would be going by, while bending his knees to duck the blow, and aiming an elbow at Cole’s solar plexus with speed 35, strength 12. ‘This would work better if I was stronger in taijutsu’ He thinks to himself. Kotetsu worked mainly in Ninjutsu, but he did not have anything worth using just yet, except….He makes a series of quick hand signs (Tiger, Boar, Ox, Dog, Snake.) as quickly as he can, while performing the elbow. Turning sideways would hopefully obscure the hand signs so that Cole would not notice the attempt to perform a substitution technique on a log about 10 meters behind, and 4 meters to the right of Cole. Once the log is in his place, he’ll rush around to flank Cole, pulling a Kunai out of one of the pouches, and pulling a pair of shuriken out of his other pouch and threw them at Cole’s legs (one at each leg) with speed 35. Kotetsu closes at speed 35 and will attempt to punch Cole in the small of the back with his empty hand.

Should the Substitution not go well, Kotetsu will fall back and come up with a different strategy.

Kotetsu dodged they attack like cole figured that he would. Kotetsu then followed up with elbow aimed at coles solar plexus. Cole took the hit as it didn't even bother him. With coles naturally strong body it would take more than that to hurt him. Cole watched Kotetsu out of the corner of his eyes. He saw Kotetsu turn were cole couldn't see what he was doing. Cole figured that it was some kinda of jutsu to put some distance between them. He also figured that it would more than likely be a substitution jutsu. Since kotetsu had yet to use any jutsu. Which lead to maybe kotetsu hasn't been out of the academy that long yet. Which lead cole to think maybe he over did it just a little bit.






Cole went with his gut thinking that it was going to be a substitution jutsu. Cole did what he would expect himself to do in that situation and threw 1 kunai directly behind him. He figured that Kotetsu would try and come up behind him, but on they off chance that he was wrong. Cole would be ready to counter an attack from the sides as well by using his dance of the Willow jutsu. This would give him a speed boost as well as sprout bones out of his hands, knees, elbows and other smaller bones out the rest of his body.

Since Cole did not move, the pair of shuriken did exactly what they were supposed to do, and sliced fairly deep gouges in Cole's calves. Not hamstringing him, but definitely hampering his ability to move and run properly. 'I'm not sure how either of my hit did against him since he hasn't made a sound from it. Those shuriken definitely look like they did their job though. That should slow him down for sure. I can always heal that up afterwards.' Kotetsu thinks to himself. The Kunai that Cole sent behind him was a little off the mark, since Kotetsu was moving at him from an angle. 'Perhaps weapons might work best in this regard. Victory of a thousand cuts is still a victory...' He decides as he continues his advance on an angle. With Cole's back turned, Kotetsu would make a the hand signs to create a clone jutsu just out of Col's periphery and then had it move just inside and running towards Cole to make it seem like he's trying to catch him unawares from the side. While Cole is distracted by the clone, Kotetsu will attack from behind, using the kunai in his hand to slash at Cole's back, diagonally from just below his right shoulder to just above his left hip, before leaping away and regrouping. 'I wonder if he's just playing with me...' Kotetsu thinks to himself, 'playing possum to get me to lower my guard...I can afford to take my time and learn... the patient hunter always wins.'
