Kozachi wasn’t prevented from having friends outside of the clan. After all, making friends with someone within the Uchiha clan was kinda like making friends with a cousin. Give it some time, and they’d get on your damn nerves. So, some years ago while she was still in the Konoha academy, she’d made friends with someone who she’d thought was the most beautiful girl in the world. Those days were, of course, some of the happier ones in her life. What had happened wasn't her fault (something she had to keep reminding herself of). It'd been a cute one who'd dropped her notebook on accident into a fountain. Kozachi hadn't thought anything of the notebook, her eyes were on the girl. The pale hair and grey eyes designated her to be from some weird clan centralized in the southeastern portion of the village. She didn't know anything about them other than that, since their bloodline was supposed to be some kind of tightly kept secret. With security that somehow rivaled that Uchiha clan's, they managed to somehow keep such information contained. Well, it didn't make much sense to her, given how little resources that clan had access to, but it seemed to be a fact nonetheless.
The girl had noticed Kozachi giving her normal, dead-fish-eye stare, and waved cheerfully. Huh. Maybe she'd be nice to hang around after all. They had lunch together, and the girl introduced her self as Anri. Apparently, it was short for something, but it wasn't something Kozachi could pronounce correctly. Her unsuccessful efforts made Anri giggle. Man, she was kinda bubbly, huh? Kozachi told Anri about herself, as well. Uchiha clan.... second child. Probably not destined for much. Not really a complaint, more of just a normal acceptance. Anri frowned at that, something that Kozachi didn't expect could happen up to that point.
According to her, anyone could be good at what they wanted to if they tried hard enough. Yeah, Kozachi'd heard that one before. Teachers and supervisors were always telling kids that... to bait them into working harder. Bloat someone with praise, and they'd grovel before your feet. Talent meant something more significant to Kozachi. Not everyone was born equally, so that meant that not everyone could achieve the same goals in life, regardless of how hard they worked. Still, Anri seemed to stay firm in her errant belief. Was it some kind of delusion her family had taught her?
Regardless, Kozachi liked her nevertheless, and the feeling was reciprocated. After graduating, they still met now and then. Anri was more of a medic (because of course, she was). Kozachi didn't have the talent, disposition or attitude to be a medic in the slightest. it didn't bother either of them in the slightest that their paths were different. It was something that Anri dealt with, and that Kozachi accepted. Either way, it was her that Kozachi was going to see today. She had decided to up and meet with her after training. She'd been working on non-fire techniques for a bit, and the work was harder than she'd hoped it be.
Either way, they’d decided to meet at some kind of cafe. Kozachi’d never heard of the place before, but she trusted her friend, so she decided to just go along with it. It was halfway across town too… what a pain. Rather than walking, Kozachi did the smart thing and took public transit. Trolley cars were noisy and crowded, but it was generally better than walking on the fucking sidewalk for ages. In the end, she ended up reaching her destination in a trifling 10 minutes rather than 30. Phenomenal, right? She supposed that if she were to go over the rooftops… but no, she’d already made her decision. Tram it was!
She got there a few minutes early, as it turned out, and Anri hadn’t turned up yet. Well, being a girl in an influential clan helped sometimes, she thought, as she took a table and waited. Reaching over to the parasol in the middle, she’d start cranking it up, expanding the umbrella to produce some shade.
She took out her cell phone and checked her messages. Yeah, of course she owned a casual cell phone. What self-respecting (cell-f-respecting?) millennial didn't? Oh well, this was fine. A shadow fell across her screen and she looked up abruptly, eyes squinting against the s- oh, right. She'd opened the umbrella. With the shade, she could see quite easily that Anri was standing over her. Yes! She'd made it. Oh, thank god.
"Hi there!"
"Hello." Kozachi replied dully, though the smile on her face showed that she was happy that Anri was there. Her friend sat down, grinning happily, clearly excited about something. Kozachi waited patiently as she tapped her spoon against the complimentary glass of water, waiting for a server to appear.
"Hey, hey, hey guess what I found!" Kozachi was a patient person, and knew just to wait out the tide of Anri trying to build up some kind of friendly suspense. So, in response, she just smiled and nodded.
The waiter came over, and Kozachi gave their order while Anri fumbled around clumsily in her bag. She knew what they both liked, and it wasn't really a meal, just a nice little desert/snack. Cake was so nice. No donuts, though. Those were for her own private time. She confessed to having a weakness to sweets, sometimes. Hard candy, though, was generally a no for her.
"Got it!" Anri emerged from her bag with what appeared to be a small luminous cube. Kozachi had never seen anything like it. Instinctively, she almost activated her sharingan to take a look at it, but refrained. Even in front of a girl she was having a casual relationship with, exposing clan secrets might be a bad idea. "I found it in my big sis' room! I have no clue what it is though.... ever since she disappeared, I've been trying to figure out what happened, and now I find this near her bed! It'd incredible..."
"Hold on a second, why didn't you notice it before? You all live in the same place, right?"
"Welll.... uh..." The hesitation in her voice was obvious. Even without her sharingan to read more subtle physical clues, Kozachi was smart enough to figure out what was going on.
"Let me guess." She received the cake and dug in, speaking between chews. "You snuck into a room you weren't supposed to be in, didn'cha?" She swallowed, relishing the taste of the cake. Man, she wished she lived on this side of town. A small fantasy of living with Anri snuck into her mind, but fled quickly. She didn't have time for dreams that might not ever come true.
"Welllll... yeah, okay!" Anri responded, her cheeks blushing. Ahhh... that looked a little nice on her. "But I still want you to figure out what this thing is. If it was left behind by big sis, then it must be important!" Her face looked pleading now. Like a puppy oh mah gawd!
Kozachi rolled her eyes, trying to seem nonchalant as she finished the first half of her slice. "Where the hell am I supposed to start? It's not like I have any idea what this thing is. You knew her best, so you'd probably have the best shot at telling me what it could possibly be."
"That's the thing! I've tried everything that made sense to me? Pushing it into spots in the bookcase, banging it on various objects... nothing works! I even tried soaking it in d-"
"Oooohkay! Too much information." She held up her hands, silencing the other girl. She supposed that since it meant this much to her, she didn’t mind trying a little hard. Oh, naivety.
The moment she activated her sharingan while looking at that bizarre cube, she felt like she was being thrown down some deep vortex of unimaginable horror. Her body, she knew, was still there, gazing intently at the cube, but her mind, her consciousness was now… elsewhere. Why, this was quite unimaginable. How could it be possible that such a thing existed? Simply by using her chakra vision on it… she had somehow fell down some kind of mental wormhole. She knew that all she had to do was deactivate her chakra vision, but she was curious as to what lay beyond.
