Laughter is healthy
Masaru reread the mission dossier and sighed. Katsu was going to have some fun with this one, and there was a good chance it would be at Masaru’s expense. “Katsu, we got a new mission.” He handed it over to his brother and watched as his eyes started to shine. I’m doomed.
“Masaru this is going to be great! I don’t know how this is ninja work, but who cares right?” He looked to his brother, “Did they give you an outfit?”
Masaru nodded and placed a sack on the ground. Inside there was a rainbow colored wig, a tiny green hat, a red nose, a very loud and colorful outfit, and varying colors of face paint. There were also an assortment of different objects they could use, like a banana peel, different colored clothes, all sorts of different tools of the trade. Katsu looked through it all, “So… who gets to be the clown? And how are we going to do this face paint… I think if either of us did it we would likely terrify the children.”
Masaru nodded, he had had the exact same thoughts. He pulled out a second bag and dumped another set of the exact same clothing on the ground though slightly larger than the first. “I asked about that and it seems they have the clothing in a number of sizes as they have been giving this mission out for a while to all different people whenever Poof isn’t available. I can wear the slightly bigger clothes, they won’t fit well, but I am a clown, it isn’t like I need to be trendy. They also said they had someone that could do our makeup at the hospital. The first few times they gave this mission out the clowns were a little too scary for the kids, so they made sure to be ready in the future.”
Katsu nodded. It kind of felt like luck was on their side, but when he really thought about it, these preparations by the village made sense. “Alright, let’s get changed.” Katsu immediately started pulling on the clothing, while Masaru just watched him. Once he was finally fully dressed Katsu looked to his brother. “Chop chop, get them clothes on.
Masaru shook his head and put all the clown clothes back in the bag. “I can get dressed at the hospital. There is no reason to walk around the city looking like that.” He gestured to his brother, “Have fun walking there with those shoes.” He then took off at a slight jog, glancing over his shoulder to see his brother struggling to keep up.
As they arrived at the hospital, the staff immediately sent them toward the children’s wing to get fully in character. One of the nurses there applied the makeup expertly. She had been working in the children’s wing for a few decades now and after years of applying face paint to the kids to brighten there day had become rather skilled at it. With that complete the two looked at each other and then at a mirror.
Katsu smiled, his face was painted white with thin red diamonds painted around his eyes from top to bottom. He had a large red smile about three times the size of his normal mouth. His brother looked similar, the diamonds around his eyes were blue and the nurse had given him rosy red cheeks. At Katsu’s suggestion she had also painted his mouth in a kind of o shape so he looked constantly surprised. “That’s a good look on you.” He turned to the nurse, “Thank you, and in the future if my brother there has an urge to get his clown on, do you think you could help him out?”
The nurse smiled and nodded while Masaru struggled not to tackle his brother and begin chocking him. “Stop being an idiot in here, and go be an idiot out there.” He pointed out to the room with the waiting children.
Katsu’s giant smile became even bigger as he skipped out into the room with the waiting children. “Hi kids! I’m Goof the clown! Poof couldn’t be here today so he asked if I could come and visit.” He heard the kids giggling as he heard a chorus of replies saying hi. “And today I brought a special guest with me. This is my brother Doof!” He gestured toward where he had entered with one of his arms.
Masaru had started to move when he heard his brother’s introduction, but stopped dead when he heard his name. It angered him, but it also made him want to laugh. He knew he should have discussed his name before his brother went out there. Doof copied what his brother had done and began skipping out. Just as he reached the center of the room, Goof tossed a banana peel at his feet. Doof pretended not to notice, and when he stepped on it he slipped and tumbled to the ground to the sound of laughter. He then picked his head up looking around, the surprised look painted on his face working well with the joke. Then he hoped up and continued skipping to his brother.
Goof smiled at the kids, “So how are you all doing today? Are you ready to have some fun?” He heard the kids say yeah as he pulled out three rings from his bag. He messed around with it, looking slightly confused as he put them around his arm, then shook his head. He then placed them on top of his head, again he shook his head. Exasperated he tossed the three rings over his shoulder at Doof who acted as if he struggled to catch them fumbling with them in the air until he was juggling them.
The giggling continued as Doof juggled the three rings. Goof on the other hand had gone back into his bag and pulled out a rubber chicken. He put a finger to his mouth, instructing the kids to stay quiet, then he tossed the chicken toward Doof who was promptly struck by a chicken and dropped his rings.
At this point, it was clear Doof had had enough. He marched over to Goof and pushed him. Goof pushed him back, and when Doof went to push him again, his right hand disappeared into Goof. He looked at his hand, then he looked at the kids, then he looked back at his hand. He made a struggling sound as he pulled on his arm which didn’t move. He scratched his head, then he grabbed his right arm with his left arm and made another straining sound as he pulled with both arms. Again nothing happened. Then he popped his left hand up in the air, a big smile on his face as if a lightbulb had just gone off. He pulled out a squirt bottle and sprayed it on his arm, a few errant blasts of water hitting a now spluttering Goof. Once again, he pulled on his arm.
While all this had been happening, Goof had grabbed a pile of colored cloth that was tied together making a long colorful rope of sorts. He placed it in his right hand behind is back where the kids wouldn’t be able to see it and when Doof’s hand finally came out, he grabbed the end of it, and it looked as if a string of colorful cloth was now coming out along with Doof’s hand.
Doof stared at the cloth in confusion, pulling on it slowly, as more and more continued to follow. He started pulling faster and faster until finally the last piece of cloth came out, and he had a small pile at his feet. He looked down at the cloth at his feet, then at his brother, then finally at the kids. He threw his hands up in the air and shrugged.
“Okay kids, I think me and Doof need to get going, but it was a lot of fun visiting with you today. I hope you will let us come back and see you again sometime.” He made big waving gestures as he walked away. His brother Doof tripped over the rags on the ground, one last time, then popped up and made his way out of the room.
The two chatted with the nurse as they took off the face paint, and Masaru changed back into his normal clothes. They then headed back home, Katsu changing out of his outfit and back into his normal clothes. They placed all of the clown clothes and clown gag tools back into there bags. They took the outfits back to the office and turned them in finishing the mission.
Katsu was grinning as he thought of some other fun things they could do for the kids. “We need to go back and visit those kids again. I bet we could have a lot of fun with us being identical and breaking out some ninjutsu. We are definitely visiting them again sometime.”
