Now that Kozai was in possession of greater power, it was time for him to begin work on the next stage. The curiosity that Echo had inadvertently placed within him had grown over the years, to the point where this was now one of his main priorities. What power was so great and terrifying that even a jinchuuriki had forbidden him its pursuit? It seemed it was human nature to pursue the forbidden, though from the information he'd gathered from Denkiteki's memories, it didn't seem all that bad. Had Echo's connection with this power been personal? Kozai wished he'd had the opportunity to read Echo's mind before the man had passed. Well, missed opportunities were rarely able to be recovered.
At the moment, he was in the library, relaxing a bit and organizing his thoughts. He didn't know about the unique journeys the man in Den's memories had gone through, but there was a missing element that he hadn't considered yet, and he doubted that he could figure it out without significant effort. He sighed, standing up. The elements that he'd managed to gather together so far had been easy enough to acquire, but it seemed he'd hit what the ascetics called a "bottleneck".
Nevertheless, he'd never allowed obstacles to stand in his way before. With his vision of the future and his internal control of time, he had all of eternity to plumb the secrets that his former kage had forbidden to him. However, without a lead today, it seemed he'd be working on a different project. Now that he'd received the kage's permission, it was time to begin blazing his own path in the village. Yasaki may not know it, but Kozai already had a firm grasp on the balance of power here, and he was about to tip it in his own favor.
He could just walk out and obliterate the physical church itself, but that would be pointless. A religion didn't exist in a building, but in the minds of its worshipers. As such, expending a vast amount of power to take down a cathedral or such would do nothing ultimately. Instead, he had to dismantle it from the ground up. There was no love in the world, no devotion on earth, that could not be shaken and subverted. Now, where to start? Someone with hope, but also ambition. Could he really succeed in what he intended to do?
The man began writing a letter, one that he didn't sign. Placing it in the post, he realized that he was alone in the archives. Hadn't there been someone here, someone who had been assisting him prior to his disappearance? Yes, some girl. It seemed after his disappearance, she had lost her reason to assist at the library. Sighing, Kozai figured that he'd better track her down. He didn't need her work or her company, but she had meant something to Akihana, and he figured that it wouldn't hurt to find out what had happened to her.
Naturally, it was odd that he couldn't quite find where she lived. Her name didn't show on any of the address records of the city currently. The people who kept these books were good, too, so he couldn't chalk to up to error that easily. Perhaps he'd be able to build some kind of pattern by looking at older records. The man walked through the library, gathering the books he needed. Ah, there she was. A few months ago, she'd lived at an apartment close to the library. After that, though, there were no further records of her, at least in terms of places of residence.
Going to the apartment itself wouldn't yield any results in and of itself, but it might give some insights that he wouldn't have gotten otherwise. Since the library was already closed, he headed out into the cool evening air. Kozai had grown up in northern climes, so this was an environment that he was familiar with. It was odd that he didn't miss Iwagakure in the slightest, but the loss of the people there (or one person specifically) left a slight and unfamiliar pang in his heart from time to time. He supposed that not even he was immune to the ravages of loss, unfortunately. Agito was dead, and nothing could bring him back.
As he approached the apartment building, he noted the poor surroundings. Shinobi weren't attacked here, but he didn't look like your average shinobi. As such, he kept an eye out as he always did. A good thing, too, as he almost missed the figure coming out of the apartment door that he was looking for. Kozai took to the roof, silently following the figure as it crept out of the building and down the metal stairs leading into the apartment's lot. Strange; it didn't look like the person he'd been hoping for.
Confronting the man, he figured he'd rather read the man's mind than use some kind of brutal interrogation method that would probably result in undesirable outcomes. So instead, he simply searched through the man's memories, freezing slightly when he found out that the girl had died a few months ago. Well, that was that, he supposed. He figured as a former friend and employer, he should visit her grave, though he was really just simulating proper behavior. In truth, he didn't see the point. She was gone, like Agito.
Still, he'd made a commitment to this simulated behavior, and discipline mandated that he follow through with it. He began the short trek toward the graveyard, eyeing the darkening sky as the sun slipped below the horizon. While this might not be the best time to be outside on the streets, again, it didn't really bother him. Even in his currently weakened state, normal humans were no match for him whatsoever. Regardless, he probably did look like an easy mark. A lone man who didn't look too strong (or armed for that matter) wandering about in the night? Better to stick to the main roads, if only for convenience's sake.
Arriving at the graveyard, he took note of the tombstone he was looking for, and just sort of... stood there for a while. Agito hadn't gotten a burial, so he'd never really had to do anything like this before. Kozai honestly didn't see the point. Burials, of course, were necessary, but it wasn't like visiting the graves of the fallen really helped anything. He sighed, disappointed. He thought that by mimicking normality he'd be able to understand it better, but so far it wasn't really paying off for him at all.
Sighing, he headed home. It was time to cast aside the facade. He was tired of trying to do things Akihana's way. From this point onwards, he was going to seize control of every possible asset within the village. Yasaki might be his kage now, but authority had never stopped Kozai from pursuing his goals. All these false sentiments and pointless behaviors were a distraction. It was time to focus on what really mattered. With enough power, he could make anything happen, within reason. And although his ultimate goal was somewhat benign, he knew of several powers that would probably want to get in his way. After all, the plan relied on taking secrets from those who would see them kept hidden. The Archives were meant to be a nexus of all information for public use, and he intended to fill it. As such, he needed to use his time wisely.
