[solo] The Night Shift
Fri Aug 21, 2020 12:00 am
Maintenance
Yosei sped through the inky blackness of the wintry night, fighting through a biting gale of wind that was passing through the island country. On every street, shops were shuttered, windows locked down, and pedestrians had long since fled for shelter. The storm was one of the worst of the season so far, and no one had quite expected it to be this bad. What a terrible night to have a mission all the way across town.
He made it to the bank with seconds to spare, just as it closed, skidding through a puddle in front of it's steps in order to make his way up. The security guard at the door stopped him.
"You the genin? Here for the night shift?" He said gruffly.
Yosei nodded, reaching for the keys.
"Dry yourself off, you're dripping all over the place and we just cleaned the floors this morning."
Rolling his eyes, Yosei stepped under the awning of the front doors and opened his fans with a sharp snap, then performed some light Wind Release jutsu to blast himself dry with a powerful gust.
"Good enough for you?"
"I suppose. The place is yours kid, don't mess it up."
He took the ring of keys off his belt and passed it over to Yosei. It was a heavy brass set weighed down by dozens of keys, each one accompanied by a little tag listing what that key was for. His first task was to visit each one of the doors, safes, lockboxes and windows that those keys locked and make sure that nothing was left open that shouldn't be. Granting himself a burst of speed with chakra and using the directory and map booklets from the front desk, he whizzed around the bank making sure everything was locked down.
Once that was done, it was time for the perimeter check. Retrieving a flashlight from the supply closet, Yosei planned the route he would take throughout the premises to make sure it was all clear. The flashlight was a great prop, but it didn't feel like the image was complete yet. Yosei transformed himself into a slightly more aesthetically pleasing version of the security guard and looked at himself in the mirror. He looked positively ordinary, perfect for the job. Giving the flashlight a little twirl for good measure, he did a lap of the building.
There wasn't anything noteworthy to report on.
So maybe he'd try outside. He opened the side door and locked it after him, and began patrolling the perimeter of the bank, decked out in a rain poncho he found in the supply closet.
Again, nothing. But, it occurred to him, perhaps he was simply being too loud. There could be trespassers around, but they were alerted to his presence each time. He cast off the poncho for added stealth and used Wind Release again to quiet his footsteps. He began stalking around on the roof of the bank, creeping low behind bushes. By the end of it, he had nothing for his trouble but completely ruined hair.
Stepping inside, he rung his hair out, only realizing after the fact that he had now created a muddy puddle in the middle of the bank's marble floor. He was about to clean it when he heard the phone at the front desk ringing. Dashing over, he picked up just in time.
"Is this the Genin in charge of maintenance tonight?" Came a voice Yosei recognized as the night receptionist at the Mission Dispatch center in the Mizukage's office. "Your relief is unavailable, I'm afraid. You're the only one available for the rest of the night so you're going to have to make it until morning."
Yosei politely accepted this and put the phone down with a sort of numb frown on his face. He'd already gotten through all of his assigned tasks. Except of course, for cleaning! It only occurred to him when he looked back at the mess that he had made. He was also supposed to clean during his night shift. He used more Wind style jutsu to dry himself and clear the floors, then quickly found a mop and bucket and finished the rest of the building.
He looked at the clock. Six more hours until the morning shift started and his relief came.
He laid out all his Kunai and Senbon, counted them, organized them, recounted them, named them. He counted all the lockboxes in the bank and ran laps around it, trying to beat his best time.
"This is bizarre," Yosei said, having normalized talking to himself somewhere around hour five. "I've been on stakeouts longer than this. I've sat through rehearsals longer than this. Why am I so restless?"
Something about the job brought it out in him, he supposed. Eventually, he just laid on the floor out of boredom, wishing he'd remembered to bring a book. If he had no entertainment, he would just have to make it.
Sitting cross legged, Yosei focused his chakra and used the Hidden Mist jutsu as a component for the Steaming Multi-Story Building Technique alongside the False Surroundings technique. He was the only target of both these Genjutsu's. He created a vivid illusory world out of the bank around him, recreating old plays he had seen or put on at his family theatre, giving visual form to some of his favourite novels.
By 6am, he was experiencing powerful self-inflicted hallucinations in which he, as a much larger future version of himself with rippling abs who also happened to be the Mizukage, wrestled with several of the legendary Bijuu. They crushed the futuristic metropolis of Neo-Kiri beneath their feet as Yosei roasted three of the tailed beasts alive with his laser beam technique.
The door swung open as two security guards stepped in. Yosei was slumped against the front desk, shirtless, eyes watching incredible events occur that were completely invisible to the other two.
"Hey kid, uh... You okay?"
"I... I am the Mizukage... Speak more respectfully to me."
The two guards shared a look.
"Never ask a shinobi to do honest work, right?"
