Sunagakure Chunin Exam: Sumiko vs Daiki

For those spectating in the provided seats placed in a semi circle around the arena - which appears as a large circle, 100 meter radius from the center and stamped with a bronze seal of the Sunagakure ‘Impossible Triangle’ symbol. Surrounding the circle is a 10 meter trench of water being fed through several wall mounted spouts, the water trench meets at one end to form a 30 meter wide expanse of water. On the arena itself are several archways, pathways, statues, trees and shrubbery. All spectators are unseen by the participants and instead of arranged seating there is simply grey misty ‘nothing’.

This is all an illusion, for those spectating it is akin to watching a 3D movie - nothing is real so all spectators are free from danger of stray jutsu or flying debris.

~ The days seemed to draw on and on as the young kunoichi awaited to hear about her placement in the Chuunin Exams. Perhaps it was the impatient minds that accompanied such youth that made this time feel like lifetimes but at any rate when the news finally had reached her; Sumiko was nothing less than delighted. The announcement of the second round zipped through the village like wildfire and it required an immediate summoning which made this excitement quickly shift into anxiety once more as the perfectionist side of her began to take root. Thanks to her parents, Sumiko was able to gather all of the things she needed to head out of the door. She wore a kimono of red silk but this was unlike the formal nature that her previous kimono was as it maintained the same functionality as her everyday kimono but the color red was a part of a family tradition that stayed with the Yoshido family. A few moments would pass before the kunoichi found a crowd of people, both being of combatant and spectator status which caused her to pause.~

(Thought) " That's right. . . this is the Simulation Battle Arena. My parents can't be too far behind then."

~ As most of her upbringing had been heavily traditional and mundane, Sumiko hadn't really ever stepped foot in this arena until now and it just provided another layer of muddled emotion that seemed to be layering like icing. The kunoichi gathered her nerve before funneling into the line of combatants, some of which were familiar to her, to register and then enter the arena. A few moments into her arrival, the news of her opponent reached had reached her and it was the very last person she would expect.~

(Thought) "Daiki Senju? Perhaps they want to see how his physical enhancements would stack against a non-modified fighter?"

~ As she was escorted to the room, thoughts regarding the reason for their assignments funneled through her head but none would stick. When the door opened to reveal an eerie white room and chairs. Sumiko's body tensed up slightly as a slight fear of what was to come came over her. Were they going to hook her up to a machine? Would it hurt? That is when Sebastian's familiar voice began to give instructions; a surprising sight for sore eyes. Her grey eyes shifted over to him as he spoke mainly as a means to displace her own discomfort with the idea that he would make sure that nothing happened to her being hooked up to the machine. . . after all that is what senseis do right? Once he completed the instructions, Sumiko would bow to him and then to Daiki should he have been in the room at the time before walking over to sit in one of the chairs and slowly slipping on the headset which mildly tussled her hair.~

~ Sumiko sat silently as Sebastian clicked at the keyboard and suddenly she found herself in another world. It was an arena of a unique structure and despite it being virtual reality everything felt so real. She took a moment to get used to this new situation and even looked up at the stadium only to see a haze coating the area. "Good Luck" were the final words that Sebastian offered them before Sumiko's grey eyes focused on Daiki's. This was it. . . the time to show Sebastian, Lord Guren, her parents, and her village that she is deserving of the rank of Chuunin; She didn't plan on disappointing. The kunoichi signed the seal of confrontation before moving back 25 meters so that a total of 50 meters existed before them. By this period, Sumiko's face had hardened as she merely drew her great folding fan from its' holster before slamming the closed fan upon the earth. This Virtual Reality was said to prevent lethal damage to their opponents so she was going to treat him as an enemy.~

(thought) "Daiki Senju. . . I will CRUSH you!"

~ From the moment of matriculation, Sumiko felt a bit of guilt. Her serious and aggressive mentality seemed to be purely excessive compared to Daiki's more lighthearted and kind disposition. His polite nature was like a drink of cool water and gained him a few points of respect as Sumiko allowed him to get settled. While he did so the kunoichi was cycling through the confounding variables that stood in the way of her victory. Her thoughts began as Daiki reached for his headband.~

(thought) " Well, I know for certain that Daiki has recently gained a horrifying taijutsu boost so close range will be risky. . ."

~ By this point, her opponent had just secured the headband on his forehead and Sumiko's grey eyes peered upon the boy's every move. The truth was that Sumiko held a disdain for close combat herself as she tended to be a fraction of her opponent's sizes in most cases but could there be a haven in immediate combat if she was careful? Her tiny hand squeezed the hilt of her closed fan as she realized that her initial sign of intimidation might have suggested her primary form of combat. The thoughts had slowly begun to transform from a state of chaos into a streamlined path so that the tactician could better formulate her actions. When Daiki signed the seal of confrontation and bowed, Sumiko would bow in return with her guilt being shifted into curiosity and excitement.~

" Same to you, Daiki-kun"

~ Sumiko responded as he offered her a smile before retrieving a single kunai from his ninja pouch. It was at this time that the kunoichi had come up with a course of action that presented itself as the kunoichi reholstering her great fan and taking a deep breath before racing towards Daiki at 40 speed while signing with notable speed and accuracy, Bird > Snake > Bird > Horse. The moment she had cleared 30 meters Sumiko segmented the air within her chest by releasing 6 compressed baseball-sized wind orbs at 65 speed each with 65 power. The kunoichi was meticulous to the point where she'd release each orb exactly 30 degrees from each other so that any side movements would be punished. At the conclusion of her Wind Release: Air Bullets, the kunoichi would merely stand very still with a single hand placed on her great folding fan while she watched his reaction carefully.~

~ This scenario provided the best level of stimulation for Sumiko as it seemed that both parties wanted to prove their worth but not at the expense of their comrade due to a need to grow their ego.  As her Wind Release: Air Bullets divided his section of the arena like a protractor, Sumiko watched as suddenly his chakra seemed to fluctuate and the kunoichi swore that it spread around his person like a bubble and when her bullet connected it merely dissipated before him.~

(thought) " A Chakra Barrier? Hm, I'll have to have him teach me that sometime."

~ This would change the girl's plan a bit and just as Daiki had taken his deep breath in preparation for a counterattack, Sumiko would place the kunai's wrapped hilt into her mouth. Daiki initiated his attack by charging toward her at high speed following this action. This immediately worried her as the thought of taijutsu against a kekkei that was said to match or even surpass the Shikotsumyaku would undoubtedly spell a quick ending to the fight. Sumiko knew that her counter would have to be flawless, to say the least as she recalled the sheer strength that this boy possessed in the training grounds.~

(thought) "Here he comes! I must be careful!"

~ The kunoichi began to sign a little way after Daiki had begun, Rat - Snake - Rat - Ram - Ox. The moment she had completed these hand signs the world seemed to open wide open to her. Everything seemed to clear to her now and her body seemed to have found a new unknown source of power. At this point, Daiki would be upon her with a glowing blue fist ready to pummel her.  Sumiko thought quickly and decided that keeping distance would be the best option as she merely hopped back 3 meters to buy her more time but the moment Sumiko's back foot hit the ground she would arc around Daiki in the direction of the currently inactive fist with an impressive 80 speed. As she made her maneuver around him, a single hand went into her pouch to retrieve an explosive tag. When Sumiko stopped behind her opponent she quickly attached the tag to the ring of her kunai and infused it with her chakra before releasing the contraption (Kunai and paper bomb at 50 health each) with 44 speed directly into his head following if he moved left or right. Sumiko would then release a single hand sign to detonate the paper bomb, when it reached cleared the 3-meter distance, before quickly hopping back to save herself from being caught in the explosion, stopping at 12 meters.~

~ The fight was quickly picking up in intensity as each party seemed to favor brain over brawn; though it was apparent that Daiki had a better handle on both. Upon her redirection around his counter, Sumiko had a feeling that her element of surprise had burned out like a dying candle. She had hoped to overcome this possibility by quickly completing the second phase of her counter. Sumiko could sense the boy's chakra fluctuate once again once her nimble fingers had entered the folds of her ninja pouch which confirmed her previous worry.   A fleeting thought had crossed her mind about how bothersome the Senju had proven to her victory but at the same time, Sumiko knew that had Daiki been a pushover her potential rank would be useless.~

(Thought) " Hm. . . Daiki you are really applying the pressure."

~ Sumiko was able to combine the explosive tag with the kunai but just before she could initiate the contraption's release the unexpected happened. Suddenly Daiki's chest was in full view which quickly made the girl tilt her head up to look into his eyes and his hand had so easily gripped her tiny one with an iron grip. Her largest fear had become a reality and given his overarching strength there was very little that the kunoichi could do to break free but She'd quickly release her Senses Beyond to restore her back to base level just as Daiki's oddly pleasant voice attempted to deter her from her intended action.~


(Thought) " The first time that a guy holds my hand being in the middle of a virtual match to the death? Sounds about right. "

~ Sumiko couldn't help but sigh after Daiki spoke. . . however, there was an option that could be taken. The girl truly wondered if what they said about this VR stuff was true but this was the opportunity to test the theory. Literally seconds after the Senju had spoken, Sumiko's free hand went up and held a single sign. The explosion tag would violently explode before he could release her hand, sending fire, smoke, and potentially organic matter from both parties splattering about the arena. Should this happen as intended, Sumiko and Daiki would have but one hand to work with for the duration of the battle. As a result, the kunoichi would have let out a loud scream before leaping back 5 meters and gritting her teeth. Her kimono was nothing less than ruined as it now became a charred and maroon kimono with only one sleeve remaining.~

(Thought) " I've reduced his strength and jutsu capabilities significantly. . . It is time for phase two."

~ Sumiko thought to herself as she made sure to keep her senses sharp for him. The kunoichi hoped that her inference about medical shinobi was true so that she could finally exploit this potentially new advantage she had created on accident.~

~ If there was one thing that Sumiko learned as the fight between her and the Senju commenced; it was that even the most calculated of risks could reap no reward. Her initial worry about close combat was in fact true as Daiki's massive hand engulfed her tiny one without any yield. When the explosion tag was activated, the kunoichi had hoped that the sheer magnitude of being caught in point-blank range of the dangerous ninja tool would either force him to retreat or prohibit his ability to cast any form of sign-related Jutsu. The sound of the tag's spontaneous combustion was deafening to the kunoichi and the searing pain of the flames it procured forced a guttural shriek from Sumiko's person before they both were consumed in a plume of smoke. With everything hurting the kunoichi assumed that the second part of her plan had gone through but as she attempted to move back; it was prevented due to Daiki's grip. . . their arms were still attached?!~


(thought) " What?! Impossible!!!"

~ Sumiko thought to herself while trying to not be suffocated by the thick smoke. That is when she noticed something about Daiki that she hadn't before. Almost immediately following this explosion, the Senju had managed to spread his chakra through his body almost like an internal armor and had an innate form of regeneration. A thousand thoughts had gone through her head that spanned from disappointment to an insufferable rage. . . a descendant of the Kazekage clan bested in combat?! By this point Sumiko knew that defeat was imminent as it would seem that Daiki was the hardest counter to her skill set that she had ever met but perhaps even in failure there was a silver lining. She still had the cover of smoke that hid her movements from Daiki's eyes. The kunoichi had sufficient body awareness to maintain the slight tremors that she had demonstrated since the tag exploded while reaching into her tool pouch to retrieve a single senbon which she concealed in her mouth.~

(thought) " I REFUSE to be embarrassed like this!"

~ When the smoke did dissipate Sumiko's eyes went down towards their connected arms and grimaced at the uncomfortable sight that was her arm. Her attention was regained by Daiki when his jokey tone spoke out to her. She understood that their spar had been lighthearted since the start and that there could only be a single winner but, Sumiko couldn't help but feel the overwhelming need to rip his vocal cords out with her bare hands. This feeling only grew exponentially as he smiled and the words "You're not going to get out of this that easily" hit her like a bus. Suddenly she felt Daiki pulling her into his chest without contest and with an arc of her own hand, she realized that his kunai had to finish her off.  There was a certain poeticness about how this was playing out as it would seem that her own ambition and misjudgment had come back to bite her and that the invading kunai blade was a metaphysical representation of her repressed fears, doubts, and insecurities. Sumiko had directed her chakra about her entire body as soon as the blade was directed toward the but as the kunai pierced kimono, skin, and finally, organ the time had finally begun.~

~The placed her in the perfect position given her height and she allowed herself to sink in slightly as Sumiko quickly felt her body failing and blood pooling. Suddenly, Sumiko gathered the chakra in her mouth to shoot out a single senbon, embued with her own chakra and traveling at a speed of 42. This Senbon was aimed to partially sever Daiki's exterior carotid artery to ensure that he bled out.~
