Another chilled mug made its way to the counter’s surface. The contents within were bitter and intoxicating, but Kana was unbothered as it hit her tongue. Her eyes sighted an announcement behind the bar. A parchment pinned against the wall by a dagger. It read about an event that was being held this very night. Apparently tonight was poker night, and she needed the coin.
The kunoichi had found herself within this Rice tavern after getting caught in a chilly drizzle. Instead of letting herself get cold and wet like some stray dog, Kana came in to get a drink to warm her soul.
Maybe tonight would be a good night to play a game.
The activity inside the tavern began to grow more wild as travelers poured through the doors. It wouldn’t be long before the games began.
Kana’s eyes glanced around the crowd. Her mug was growing empty, but this would be the last for the night. A few pieces of coin would be left on the counter as she stood up to join in.
Some of the bar tables were already set with poker chips and cards. People grew more excited at the chance of winning some coin. After being here for some time, Kana already knew what the end prize amount was, and where it was hidden. If she really desired it, the kunoichi could just take the prize now and make off with it. But she was in no hurry to leave. It was still cold and inclement outside.
With the swipe of her boot, the crimson lass moved a chair back to take a seat. The table was occupied by five other people; four men and one other young girl. The girl looked to be no older than fifteen summers, but her expression revealed a person who knew exactly what they were doing. It was time to play.
The cards were shuffled and laid out around the table. After the hand was dealt, everyone took their cards and prepared for their moves. Kana’s face was unchanged as she viewed her hand.
Every move that was played by another individual, would determine the way their heart would react. She could tell when someone’s rhythm would jump with excitement, or remain calm and unchanged. This made it a little easier to read their moves, but Kana had no intentions of relying on that alone when playing her decisions.
The night grew later as a round of drinks were brought to the table. The tavern served them on the house, thankful for the excitement that the game brought for the hour. Kana gladly downed the liquor, a light flush of scarlet dusting her cheeks.
One of the players flung his cards down angrily, and the game came to an end. A grin of pure triumphant shown upon her lips as Kana collected the reward.
In truth, the kunoichi didn’t mind playing dirty, but tonight there was no need to go all out as a sly fox. The mug of liquid courage that she had drowned herself early was enough to give her the confidence of playing all night in hopes of winning every damn game. But the place was starting to grow empty, as the excitement from the games had died after that last win.
Once glance at the door let the lass know that the weather cleared up. There was no more rain pelting down from the dark sky. With the money in her pocket, and her reputation for cards rising, the kunoichi made her way out into the night to head back. The liquor in her belly keeping her warm. - exit -
