The Adoption Center

Jiro wandered idly down the canal, kicking a stone in and watching the surface ripple. It was still early, so he wouldn't start training yet. For now, he'd just enjoy his walk, content to be alone. He walked past trees and fences, and a shabby old building that looked like it was beginning to fall apart. He was about to walk right past it, when a dog came chasing after him, jumping on his legs and yapping excitedly. Lifting an eyebrow, Jiro waited for it to calm down before to kneeling to pet it. It was a small white dog with a black nose and soft, shaggy fur. "Hey you," he said, and chuckled, picking it up when it licked his fingers. It was then that he saw an old man waving him over, and he cocked his head a bit, going to him.

"Thank you for catching him, young man... You see, the doors on their kennels are falling apart, and they're getting out left and right. Say, uh.... You're a strong looking boy, would you mind helping me if you've got the time? I just need you to nail up the fallen boards and replace any that are broken. I'm too old for work like that, or I'd do it myself... And don't worry, I'll pay you an honest wage. It won't be for nothing." The man looked hopefully at Jiro, who watched him for a long moment before sighing. He didn't want extra work to do. But he couldn't very well leave the old man in this state.

"Alright," he says finally, rubbing his neck slowly. "I'll do it. Just show me where the tools are." Sighing with relief, the old man smiles and leads Jiro to a small shed, where there was a hammer and a box of nails, along with a few spare pieces of wood. "Here you are, help yourself to anything you need." Grabbing his tools, Jiro set to work, stepping into the shelter to a cacophony of dog noises. Seeing some busted kennels in the back, he moved over to them and started shifting the fallen boards, nailing them back securely into place. Like the old man said, some of them were cracked or broken, and so Jiro made a few trips back and forth to the shed to grab the extra wood.

Soon, the work was finished, Jiro noticed that a bunch of the dogs were just sitting around the building. 'Well, at least they haven't all run out the door,' he thought, and went around the building gathering up all the escaped dogs, placing them back in their kennels and making sure the doors were locked. Just outside waited the old man, who smiled when Jiro returned. "Thank you again for your hard work, son. Here, take this money and buy yourself something nice!" Jiro nodded and took the reward, shoving it into his pocket and looking to the window where he could see the cute white dog from earlier. Part of him wished he could adopt it, but he knew that wouldn't be practical. He wasn't an Inuzuka, after all. Instead, Jiro gave a half-hearted smile and walked off, putting his hands in his pockets. There was a grassy park he knew of that would be great for cloud watching.
