Genin Exam Hopefuls!

The night before the exam, Ichikai studied under the moonlight, its reflection lighting up her book with a fierce white light. The stars decorated the sky, each a tiny light in there own right. The pages of her study were littered with notes on Chakra Natures, there was a page for each detailing the benefits and drawbacks of each. Another page detailed a list of clans for each Village, mostly just where the clans originated from. The Uchiha were predominantly from the Land of Fire, Ichikai was living proof that others emigrated to other country’s. Even though there were no syllabus based on the wars of the last decade she even had notes on that too, all from the public records. Ofcourse, Kirigakure was painted in a positive light, victories always against the greatest odds, and defeats which detailed great sacrifices that always led to victory in the long run.

Even her room had countless shelves filled with knowledge, purchased and even borrowed books. Each one she knew back to front, Ichikai had delved into each book one after the other. This was her sanctuary, her safety. Literacy was her love and it never betrayed her. She could escape the trials and tribulations of being a Kunoichi and what it would mean when she would eventually go on missions that could potentially see her taking lives, not just saving them.

Evening turned into night time and the last warmth of the day had escaped from Kirigakure. Ichikai wrapped a satin blanket over her shoulder and closed the book she was working with, the noise marked the last of her study. It was time to sleep, to be able to meet the next day with a well rested mind.

”Silence! This class has been wittled down to you miserable few. You have escaped a maze, fought against creatures of the mind. You have studied every technique worth teaching those of your little worth. You bugs are ready for the exam. Anyone who fails will see the doors slammed shut and my disappointment in you will be immeasurable. Do not fail me, do or fail yourselves.

The man was sturn, with a commanding presence. It was apparent that this was to prepare the students for the future, they would be pawns after today if they got those headbands. Soldiers of fortune, or bodies thrown at a problem until the problem was fixed. Some students knew that, others unfortunately didn’t. It was why she preferred Genjutsu and Medical Jutsu over Ninjutsu, to protect the legacy of Kirigakure and her friends. Two of them had passed the exams previously, they were waiting for Ichikai before they could go on more interesting and challenging missions. The pressure was certainly on.

The pages were already in front of the students on each desk, to the right of each paper was an odd puzzle. A key was noticeable within the puzzle, on the desk draw was a lock.

”Some of you more acute minds may have noticed a big problem today. You’ve got no pens! You must obtain one. You may not leave this room, you may not leave your desk, you may not talk to any of your fellow students, you may not talk to any of the teachers, if you cannot locate the pen within five minutes. You fail. After that you have another fifteen minutes to complete your exam.”

Ichikai noticed there were no clocks, no way to work out what time it was nor how long they had left. The windows were shuttered, there were no noises either to be able to create there one passage of time, the teacher noticed the very few who looked, he smiled. The time had already begun and some looked around to see if there were any clues, Ichikai immediately took the puzzle in her hands to investigate. It was a cage surrounding the key, nothing seemed to budge. There were no openings and the key wouldn’t fit through the bars no matter how it was tried.

She took it in both hands and pressed the metal against her forehead. Chakra flooded her finger tips and the cage began to fall loose, letting go of the Chakra meant it stiffened again, the answer was to continue flooding it with Chakra until it opened. This was a true test of a characters chakra control, to much would slow it down and not enough would make the cage actually start locking again. A full minute of continued chakra was enough to open it, the key fit nicely into the lock and in the desk were a set of pens.

When it came to the exam, this was the easy bit. Ichikai was able to reflect on her studies, remembering each page that she must have wrote a handful of times each. She wondered if she failed her maybe her career would be in copy writing, or a scribe. She could imagine being one of the officials that took details for missions and prepared them for assignment to a Shinobi. Her only uneasy worry was time, Ichikai had a nack for overthinking questions and covering all bases, Ichikai was the reason why extra paper was available upon request. Around her multiple people were done, a few moments passed and she too would finish. A cramp filled her fingers and she had to stretch her hands, only half a minute passed before time was done.

“You, you and you. You cheated. You and you, you both failed to unlock the cage. The rest of you have passed this first part of the exam, you may move onto the next room. The others… take a seat.

The silence was pierced by a scream unlike anything Ichikai had ever heard, after they moved from the room in single file she wondered what would happen to those who failed, she was glad she wouldn’t find out. In the next room, which was used for general announcements to the whole academy classes were the hundreds of other students who were waiting for lunch, Ichikai joined a line which would take them to the front. One by one they demonstrated the Clone Technique and the Transformation Technique. Some students started to sweat, most were more afraid of this practical application than they were of there actual written exam.

Unlike most others, Ichikai took the time to train them both so when it came to her turn, Ichikai performed the two of them with ease. They were two Jutsu out of a small number she had but the time she spent on them was obvious. The clone technique was a perfect replica, even the glasses on her face were marked in the same way with wear and tear. Using the transformation technique she appeared like the teacher from the first lesson she had, a balding man. It was uncomfortable and she felt gross, but it demonstrated being able to transform into something outside of her own knowledge.

Congratulations Ichikai Uchiha. You can now count yourself amongst the Genin of Kirigakure, you have done the Academy proud

It wasn’t normal for her to be speechless, much less non-emotive, but she bowed her head respectfully and allowed the man to attach the Headband to her head. It rested there, the metal was cold to touch but it would soon heat with her own bodyheat. She left out of the double doors and left the Academy.

”They had this puzzle, it had a key and I just knew I had to influence it with my Chakra. The kids who failed, You should have heard them! I thought they got murdered, all came out after classes pale as snow. Honestly I can’t believe I made it Ma!”

The evening meal had drove the point home, she had passed and she was proud. Her family celebrated into the early hours. Ichikai awoke as a student, she would sleep a Kunoichi of the Mist.
