Path to chuunin pt 2
It had been a few days since Renji had completed his first trial towards becoming a chuunin. He had retrieved the scroll like the mission had asked for him to do. But, Having not heard back from the mission board about his next trial would cause Renji to worry and wonder if maybe he had not passed his first trial or maybe he had to redo it.
Waking up later than usual on this particular day, Renji would jump out of his bed and would quickly runs outside to the mail box in hopes of their being good news waiting there for him. He barely had enough time to throw on his cloths before he was out of the front door. Like the past few days, Renji was in a rush this morning to get to the mail box in order to see if his letter had finally arrived from the mission board giving him permission to continue on his journey towards becoming a chuunin. As Renji is standing outside in front of the mailbox shifting through all of the papers and letters stuffed in the box, he would finally come upon what it was that he had been waiting for all week since taking part one of the first trial. The letter would be specially addressed to Renji, with his whole name being printed in fine print across the center of the envelope. Not able to hold out another second longer, Renji would rip open the envelope and grab from it a letter. The letter reading:
‘congratulations on passing the first part of the trial Renji, you were able to effectively show that you are competent in your Infiltration skills. Now, in order to be considered a Chuunin of Kumogakure ones justu must be like second nature to them, almost like an extension of one’s arm. For this part of the trails, you are to demonstrate your precision and prowess with your Top three jutsu. You are to come to training grounds 99 tomorrow at 10 am to demonstrate the jutsu you have picked.”
Once he was done reading the letter Renji would put it away in his pocket as he slowly walks back inside of his house. Renji would be thrown for a loop by the request made in the letter ‘my top three jutsu?’ Renji would think to himself while he is walking around his house trying to answer this question to himself. Being new to the shinobi world, Renji had not really given much thought to how he used his jutsu, let alone which of them he was best at using. Unsure what to do, and knowing that he was not going to get anything productive done so long as he was inside of the house, Renji would grab every single jutsu scroll that he can find in his house, even taking a few from his brothers room, and stuffs them into a backpack. Once he was done gathering his things, Renji would head out the house and begins to make his way towards the training grounds in hope of working on a few new jutsu to add to his tool box, and to work on the ones that he already knew.
As he is on his way to the training grounds, Renji would begin to wonder which of his current jutsu where his best. He knew that taijutsu was his specialty, so he would have to at least demonstrate one of his tai moves, but which one. He could use his seven heavenly breaths method jutsu that would probably be his most flashy and eye appealing jutsu. But he rarely used it and did not like the way it restricted his byakugan due to the strain it put on his chakra network. Perhaps one of his bloodline jutsus, the gentle fist was what he was good at, but would it garner the same type of response from the proctor? Not sure but knowing that he would be using a tai move, Renji decides to try to figure out the other two jutsu that he was going to demonstrate.
Still walking to the training grounds, his thoughts would shift to his other non taijutsu skills. Instantly the first thing that would come to his mind would be his Lightning rat violent quake jutsu. It was his strongest ninjutsu skill and he knew it would give off a bang, literally. The only thing was that Renji was currently only able to create 2 lightning orbs. When he was reading the instructions to the jutsu it had said that the user can safely make up to four balls, and Renji assumed that they would be expecting him to be able to as well. But he knew that with some work he could more than likely get that done before the end of the day.
With two of the three jutsu that he was going to perform at his next trail down, Renji would move on to the third and final jutsu. This would prove hard as most of his jutsu where Genin level and his only other high level jutsu was a block, and well it was a block. With all of the scrolls that he had packed Renji would hope that one of them hold the key to his dilemma.
Finally arriving at the training grounds Renji would take a few steps inside before glaring off in the direction of training grounds 99, the site where tomorrow he would have to put all of his hard work from today to good use. He would use his hand to shield the sun from his face as he does so.
A bit nervous by the thought, Renji would continue back walking till he came to a cut down tree covered in moss that was laying next to its stump. Renji would toss his bag onto the tree stump. In an effort not to let his bag touch the moss covered tree, Renji would accidentally spill open his bag, all the scrolls inside would roll around on top of the stump some of them even rolling off.
Out of the side of his eye Renji would track one scroll in particular as it rolls towards the side of the stump. The scroll would hang off the edge for a bit, as if deciding if it wanted to stay or jump from the stump. The scroll would take the later of its two options, smacking off the side of the stump as it tumbles towards the ground. shooting his arm out Renji would catch the scroll just as it is nearing the ground, almost knocking the rest of the scrolls off the top of the stump in the process. “hmm I wonder what this one is” Renji would think to himself as he examines the scroll in his hand, ensuring that it had not gotten damaged during its fall. Taking his other hand, Renji opens the scroll unrolling it onto the stump.
Across the top of the scroll would read ‘ taijutsu puncture’ Taking a few minutes renji would read over the instructions for this technique. Seeing as it was a taijutsu technique that had an added bonus of having some range to it, Renji would quickly become intrigued by the thoughts learning this move not just for the coming trial but also to use during his shinobi career.
As Renji is going over the instructions, through his byakugan he would see as the group of three ninja that were sentries for his last mission come through the training ground entrance. Seeing them look in his direction with disgust, Renji would quickly try to act busy so as not to have to deal with them. They were probably still mad that he had out smarted them the other night. The 3 would stand by the entrance for a bit before going off about their business to train, the female ninja throwing a few nasty looks Renji’s way every now and then.
Seeing the group go about their way would be a relief for Renji as he did not have time to get in any altercation with them right now. Returning his attention to the scroll in his hands, Renji would look over the instructions once again. Being that this was a B rank jutsu Renji knew that it would be hard, but believing in his skills and having no other choice with his trials in the morning, Renji would man up and walk out so that he was now ten meters or so away from the downed tree to begin working on this new jutsu.
According to the scroll that he had read, Renji needed to focus and gather his physical energy so to speak, into his fist first. Taking up a combat stance, Renji would throw a few punches first to warm up his arm. Once he felt properly warmed, he would close his eyes and begins concentrating on trying to gather all his energy into his left hand, squeezing it so tight that his fingernails would begin to dig into the skin of his palm.
Renji’s arm would start to feel heavy as if he were holding a 20 pound dumbbell. He would have to fight just to keep his arm up. After a few more moments would pass, every second as miserable and unbearable as the last. But knowing that it would be worth it in the end if he passes his exam is all the motivation Renji would need to grind out the last few seconds it would take to gather up enough energy.
Finally having what he thinks should be a good amount of energy built up, Renji would shoot his arm forward aiming for the moss covered tree laying on the floor in front of him.
From his fist, A 3 inch wide sphere would appear from it traveling on a collision course set right for…the tree stump with all his stuff on it. Renji had not fully followed through on his punch causing the trajectory of his sphere to be off by a little. The sphere would fully unearth the stump and sends it and all the papers on top of it flying back a few meters.
Cringing and turning his face away at the last minute once he realized his attack was going to hit his stuff, Renji would not see the results of his first attempt. Through his byakugan he could see as the group of ninja look in his direction trying to figure out the cause of the sound, the cubby one even laughing uncontrollably at what had just transpired. Not one easily embarrassed, Renji would simply shrug it off, tho he is a bit pissed because of his failed attempt and would be all the more motivated to get the jutsu on his next try.
Taking back up his fighting stance one more timr, Renji would again begin to gather all his energy into his fist. This time it would not be as strenuous as he knew what to expect this time. It would also not take him as long to gather enough energy, taking nearly half time. With the energy gathered into his fist, Renji would take a step forward and launches his left fist out aiming it again at the moss covered tree. This time he would make sure to follow all the way through and a few seconds later the sphere would connect dead in the middle of the tree, the sheer impact snapping the log in half.
Renji would not jump for joy from seeing the success of his efforts as he usually does. He knew that tomorrow was the most important day of his life up until now, and he was not about to rest on his success just yet. He still needed to work on his Lightning rat violent quake jutsu. Knowing that ninjutsu was not his forte at all, Renji expected to be at this for a while.
Renji would spend nearly the rest of the day trying to improve upon his Lightning rat violent quake jutsu. At this point nearly the whole training grounds had cleared out as it was getting late. Even the group of troublesome ninja where getting ready to leave. Well at least the young boy and the cubby one. The girl appeared to be determined to finish some jutsu that she had been working on.
Finally it would just be the two of them Renji and the female ninja , who was still giving Renji dirty looks every so often. However, still unable to create more than three orbs now, Renji would be to busy worried about his struggles to be bothered with the girl and what could be causing her to give him these looks. In his time working on this jutsu he had improved his orb total by one, but he still needed that last orb if he wanted to use this jutsu during his trial in the morning.
It would be another hour before Renji is finally able to create all four orbs efficiently. Happy with his progress Renji would deactivate his Byakugan and begins to head for the training grounds entrance. As he is walking he would look towards the female ninja and seeing her still working, he would feel bad and decides to see if he can offer any help.
Walking up to her Renji would introduce himself. To which she wouldn’t even pay him much attention, instead continuing to work at her jutsu. Renji would ask her what’s she is working on to which this time she would open her mouth and response saying “the summoning jutsu, but I can’t figure out why it isn’t working. I don’t need your….” Renji would grab the scroll from the girls hand, cutting her off in the middle of her sentence as he does so. Reading the instructions as he is fighting her off from taking back the scroll, Renji would notice a note a the bottom *must mark things you want to summon.* it looked as if who ever had given her the scroll wrote it in themselves as a kind of reminder. Pointing this out to the girl she would stop fighting Renji and instead accepts his offer for help. Reaching into his bag Renji would search around a bit before pulling out the mark seal scroll, remembering that he had it when he was picking up his mess from earlier. Seeing that Renji had something that she needed and she had something that he needed, the two would agree to share their scrolls with each other.
Together the two would work on the two jutsu for the next two hours. First learning the mark seal jutsu. Being an E Rank skill they would get it down with out much time or effort. This would leave them with the remainder of the time to work on the summoning jutsu.
Once the two were done Renji would seeing that it was late, Rush home to get some rest before the trail in the morning. He would bid his new friend/rival farewell having never even got the girls name.
-----fast forward to the next morning----
The Next morning would come rushing at Renji like a brick wall, his alarm clock ringing till it falls off the table. Having gone to bed kind of late, Renji would be super tired and let’s the alarm clock jump around on the floor a bit before picking it up. Renji then jumps from his bed and would get dressed and heads to the training grounds, seeing as he was kind of in a rush, Renji would use his body flicker jutsu once he got inside of the training grounds so that he could make a B line for the forest leading to training ground 99.
Having been to training grounds 99 only just a few days ago, Renji would have a way better time of navigating the forest. Exiting the thick part of the forest, Renji’s attention would shift towards the large tree that had housed him for so long during his first trial. Renji would stop for a second to take in the nostalgia of the moment. Looking up he could even see the unnatural bend in the branch that he had rested on.
Continuing on he would walk up to the edge of the forest were he could now see the entire training grounds 99. Activating his byakugan Renji would expect to see a scene very familiar to the one he had seen just a few days prior. However, it would look very different from the last time he was here, instead of there being a huge house in the center, there was a huge arena. The arena was in the shape of a rectangle with its long sides being about 20 meters long and it’s shorter sides being 10 meters. The arenas floor was raised 2 meters above the ground around it, and a small staircase connected the two. Behind one of the shorter sides of the rectangle there sat 3 what Renji would assume were jounin class ninja judging by the serious look on their faces. 10 meters behind either long side of the rectangle would be spectator seating, that was from what renji could tell, packed to capacity. Through his byakugan, Renji would see a few familiar faces in the crowd. As he is scanning the crowd, Renji’s attention would come to a halt when he sees the girl from last night sitting in the third row, the mark seal still on her wrist from when they had been practicing the technique last night.
Judging by the look of things, it seemed that everyone was waiting for Renji, who was still a bit in shock standing next to the edge of the tree line. It would take Renji a few moments to walk the distance from the edge of the trees towards the arena in the center of the field. Renji would look around and take in as much of the sights and sounds as he can while he is walking, he would deactivate his Byakugan as he is walking towards the arena. Once he was at the staircase Renji would turn and bows towards the jounin that were judging the even, in an attempt to win them over with his courtesy from the start, before walking up and on to the stage. Once Renji was in the middle of the arena facing the jouinin the crowd would go silent as one of the three opens his mouth to speak.
“Next up we have Renji Hyuga” the man would say in a loud and deep authoritative voice, pausing for a second as the decent sized crowd cheers when they hear the boys name. He would wait a second for the cheers to die down before continuing on to say “ you are here today because you want to earn the right to be considered a Chuunin of the village hidden in the clouds. But you must first show us how you have grown as a ninja. We eant you to show us at least 3 of your best moves. I want you first to tell us the jutsu then explain it in as much detail as you can and finally we want you to demonstrate the jutsu for us all to see. You will be scored for degree of difficulty execution of said jutsu, and for your description that you provide. You may begin when ready.”
Once the man was done speaking, all eyes in the training ground whould shift towards renji. Having never been in front of such a large crowd, Renji’s knees would begin to shake a bit his palms would start to sweat a little and a drop of sweat would trickle down the left side of his face hanging from his chin for a second before falling to the ground. Looking up at the judges, Renji knew that he would receive no sympathy from them as they looked like they done seen it all done it all, the only way it seemed to win them over was by effectively and efficiently preforming the jutsus. Wiping the sweat from his palms off on his pants leg, Renji would take a few steps closer towards the part of the stage closer to the judges.
Opening his mouth Renji would say “thank you all for coming.. the first jutsu that I am going to preform is going to be the lightning rat violent quake jutsu. It is a C rank lighting ninjutsu. The jutsu requires the use of the monkey ox Boar tiger hand seals. After making the hand seals, up to four lightning orbs will appear around the caster of this jutsu. This is a medium Range jutsu, able to reach out to ten meters from its caster. And by surging your chakra through the air one can cause the orbs to explode.” Once Renji was done speaking he would take a couple of steps back so that he was directly in the center of the arena.
Standing there, Renji would close his eyes and begins to vitalize his chakra. Not being to proficient in ninjutsu and being a bit nervous, it would take Renji a bit longer then usual to fully vitalize the amount of chakra that he would need in order to successfully preform this jutsu. As he is just about done gathering the needed amounts of chakra, Renji would make the monkey ox Boar tiger hand seals. Instantly almost as if out of thin air, four lightning orbs would appear, two over each of his shoulders. The orbs crackling and giving off a loud sound, were so bright that one could not even look directly into them with out squinting really hard. Not yet done with his demonstration, Renji would begin to wave his arms about from side to side as if doing a swaying motion. in response the four orbs would begin to dance about in a ten meter circle around the young shinobi. The orbs show would be spectacular, the crowd would give off cheers as they watch as the orbs duck and dodge one another, barely missing hitting each other. Once he was done playing with the lightning orbs, Renji would return them to their original position over his shoulders. He would then send them out in pairs, having them arc in a semi circle before colliding with each other. Just before they collide, Renji would send a surge of chakra to the two orbs causing them to explode in a majestic scene, almost like fireworks going off. Renji would do the same thing with the second pair of orbs he had hovering over his shoulders. The crowd would give off a cheer as they see the sight.
Still standing in the same spot, Renji would open his mouth back up to speak “the next jutsu that I am going to preform is going to be the taijutsu puncture. The taijutsu puncture is a B rank Taijutsu technique. Being a taijutsu technique there is no chakra involved, the sphere that you will see when I demonstrate it, is purely raw physical energy. It like the lightning rat violent quake jutsu, is a medium Range jutsu, a rarity amount tai moves.”
Once he was done speaking Renji would assume a fighting stance, spreading his legs shoulder width apart, and readying his hands in front of his face. Taking a deep breath Renji would begin to gather his physical energies into his left gloved hand. Being that he had just learned the technique yesterday, Renji would have to strain for a bit before he had gathered enough physical energy into his left hand, his fist shaking uncontrollably as he gathers the energy into it.. The crowd would be waiting in anticipation, nobody making a sound, just everyone’s eyes glued to Renji, and Renji’s fist. After a few moments Renji would start to feel that familiar heavy feeling in his arm again like he was holding a heavy dumbbell in his hands, his hand would drop a few inches from the added pressure. knowing that this was an indicator that he was near ready, Renji would take a step forward with his right leg, and shoots his gloved left hand out in front of him. Renji would insure that it has the proper follow through on it as he throws the punch.
Renji the crowd and the judges would all watch in amazement as Renji’s 3 inch sphere would shoot from his hand and goes flying through the training grounds before finally coming to a stop as it collides with a medium size tree. The sphere would hit the tree and knocks a hole in it the size of a beach ball. The shock from the blast as well as the size of the hole would cause the top half of the tree to come crashing down to the ground next to its other half, giving off a loud thud as it did so.
Two down and one more jutsu to go Renji would think to himself pumping his fist in approval, a small smile beginning to grow from the corner of his mouth, as he was very pleased with his results thus far. Renji would begin to gain a bit of confidence and the nervous feeling he had earlier would slowly start to disappear.
“and now for my third jutsu, I am going to preform the seven heavenly breaths method jutsu. This like the last is a taijutsu skill. Unlike the last this jutsu is more of a booster as it allows me to push my body past its limits. This jutsu has three different activations, which are ecentually three separate breathes. Currently I have accessed the first breath to this technique. However this jutsu does put a strain on my or anyone who uses it, chakra network, virtually making all ninjutsu useless while in this form. But the trade off can sometimes be all the more worth it.” Renji would say as he thinks back to the few times that he had actually used this jutsu. Quickly shaking the daydream from his head, Renji would begin to prepare himself to perform his last jutsu of the day.
Knowing that he had not performed this jutsu in a while, Renji would begin to wonder if he should have practiced it some yesterday. But, unable to change the past, Renji would try not to harp on this fact for to long as the show must go on he knew that he would have to forge on. Renji would take a very Deep breath over exaggerated inhale, before fully exhaling his lungs.
Knowing that he was a bit out of practice with this jutsu, and that this jutsu naturally takes a lot of focus, Renji would begin to try and clear his mind, letting go and allowing all his thoughts to run freely about in and out of his head. Renji would take one last look at the scene around him, scanning from left to right before closing his eyes. Once his eyes were closed Renji would shoot both his hands out a few inches in front of his chest one behind the other, his right hand would be behind his left holding onto his left wrist for added support. with his gloved left hand, Renji would make the peace sign. Almost instantly, a yellow aura would begin building around the young shinobi. The Aura would start around his ankles and pulsing every second or so until it had fully engulfed Renji’s entire body. Upon opening his eyes, they would not be black like they normally where but instead, they completely white.
With his seven heavenly breaths method jutsu still activated, Renji would walk over towards the edge of the rectangular arena and would preform the taijutsu puncture technique again. This time Aiming for the tree next to the first one he had hit earlier. The sphere when it made contact with this tree, would completely uproot the tree, clearly doing more damage with the added power of Renji’s seven heavenly breaths jutsu. “I hope they where able to see the difference the seven heavenly breaths made on my puncture technique” he would think to himself.
The crowd would give off some cheers and a few ooohs and aaaahs But when Renji looks in the judges direction after deactivating his jutsu, he would see that while two of them appeared to be moved a little by the demonstrations he had preformed, The one in the middle however, his face had not changed once during the entire time. Seeing that the man was not impressed yet, Renji would walk over towards the edge of the arena closes to the judges booth and opening his mouth he would say “please sir, can I preform one last jutsu sir.” To which the judge would reply “of course” a small smirk appearing on the man’s face as if his intention the whole time was for Renji to request to perform a fourth jutsu. As if he were testing to see if Renji had only prepared just the tree necessary or went above and beyond. Luckily Renji had just the jutsu that he thought would wow everyone inside of training grounds 99.
Despite just learning it last night, Renji knew that the only jutsu that he had left that he could use right now was his summoning jutsu. Digging deep into his pocket Renji would pull from it a kunai. Holding the kunai in his hand, Renji would begin to speak “thank you again for giving me the extra chance. For my last jutsu, we’ll last two. I am first going to place a marked seal on this kunai. And then I will summon it back after throwing it” Renji would sound a bit apprehensive being that he had only just came up with this plan a few seconds ago. Continuing on, Renji would say “the marked seal is an E Rank funijutsu. The user of this technique places a seal on their target using their chakra. Once the seal has been place it can then be tracked using another jutsu. The mark seal jutsu also let’s you use the summoning jutsu to summon things or people that have marked to your side. Which leads me to my next and final jutsu the summoning jutsu. This jutsu is a C rank space time jutsu. This jutsu let’s you summon to your location anything that you have already marked, like this kunai I’m holding.” Renji would place his marked seal onto the Kunai he was holding as he is finishing up his speech. The spot would only be visible for a split second before disappearing as if it had never been there in the first place.
Once the stage was set, Renji would again walk over towards the edge of the arena and with a audible ‘humph’ Renji would throw his marked kunai with all of his might, lodging it 2 inches deep into a small tree not to far from where the arena and stands were set up. Renji would be pleased seeing that the first half of the technique went off with no hiccups. Moving back towards the middle, Renji would make the Boar dog bird monkey ram hand seals before biting down hard on his thumb till he drew blood. He would then take the bloodied hand and slams it down on to the ground in front of him.
A plum of smoke would appear surrounding Renji for a second maybe 2 once the smoke had disappeared, the kunai that Renji had thrown into the tree would now be sitting in his hand for all the spectators to see. Realizing that he was done the crowd would give Renji a small round of applause as he walks over towards the judges booth to get their final verdict on how he had performed during his trial.
As he is walking towards the judges booth, Renji would get a slick idea in his head for how he could perhaps get a fee more extra credit points or at least wow the crowd one last time. Renji would activate his byakugan, and scanning the crowd he would find the girl from last night still sitting in her seat in the third row. Having found her, Renji would stop in his tracks, a few meters from the edge of the arena closes to the judges booth. Renji would smirk has he again would make the Boar dog bird monkey ram hand seals and bites down on his the thumb of his right hand. Renji would kneel down and slams his hand hard into the ground. And like before a cloud of smoke would surround the area around Renji.
The cloud would not last for to long, but once it was gone, standing a meter to the left of Renji would be the girl from last night. She would have a confused look on her face, not knowing what had just happened. Her expression would quickly change to an upset one as she would storms off of the stage, clearly mad at Renji. She would not even return to her seat, but starts to walk towards the forest surrounding the training grounds. Renji would see that the girl was clearly upset with him. Now knowing what he had done wrong, Renji would take a few steps in the direction of the girl, contemplating Pursuing after her to apologize. However, He would quickly remember where he was at and the importance of the moment. realizing that he can not chase after her right now, renji would return his attention to the judges in front of him. He would hope that the girl was not to mad at him and planed to go check on her once he was done here, assuming that he could find her.
Now with his attention back on the judges, Renji would see them all three huddled in a small circle mumbling to each other. The judge who had been in the middle, could clearly be seen leading what ever discussions they were having. The three would be in their huddle for ten good minutes. This would be far to much time for Renji to think and get lost in thought. However, he was not thinking about how he did on his trial, knowing that there was nothing he could do about it at this point. Rather Renji was concerned that he may have ruined a friendship, and is trying to figure out why the girl was so mad with him.
Renji would be so deep in thought that the judges would have to call his name 3 times before he would snap back to reality. Once they saw that he was paying attention, the judges would begin to deliver their thoughts on how he had done and their final verdict on if he had passed or not. The judge in the middle would be the one doing most of if not all of the talking, the other two just agreeing and nodding their heads every so often. The judges would hold nothing back in their criticism of the young ninjas skills. However, they were rather pleased with the control that Renji showed over his Lightning rat violent quake jutsu, though they were not fans of his little dance show with it. And they loved the way he used his taijutsu puncture jutsu in order to show the difference in power that the seven heavenly breaths method had on the puncture technique. All in all they would give Renji a B- for his trial grade and tells him to prepare as the next trial will be his most physically grueling one yet, and to expect a letter in the mail soon in regards to it.
Renji would be happy that he had passed his trial, however he was now a bit more concerned with his friend and where she might have went. Renji would then bow to the judges and the crowd. And jumping off the stage he would begin running towards the forest.
