The Crow's Nest [IO] Empty The Crow's Nest [IO]

Sat Aug 25, 2018 3:29 pm
"Another one," Saladin barked, the two words nearly slurring together into one.

The distinctive clink of glass on glass followed as the disgraced captain slid his latest glass into the mess of glassware he had emptied previously. The false warmth of alcohol had long since found its way throughout every inch of his body and yet he was unable to shake the chill of the sea. So, he did the only logical thing a captain without a ship could do, seek comfort in the next glass of whatever the bartender brought him.

"S-sir, don't you think you've had enough?" the slim bartender asked, tripping over his words.

The deep rumbling laugh of a man well past his limit filled the seaside tavern. Most of the establishment's patrons had left the poorly lit tavern long ago, but the stalwart few who remained dropped into an uncomfortable silence at the sound of Saladin's laugh. Not a single soul said a word until the obtrusive noise trailed off into an abbreviated nothingness.

"Another one,"
This time the Pendragon intoned each word so clearly one might be forgiven if they thought him sober.

The bartender took a deep breath—one of many since the red-eyed Saladin darkened his door earlier in the evening—and poured the man another drink. Sooner or later, the slim man reasoned, his unwelcome guest would blackout and then he could be rid of him. Until then? Well, it was better not to foment further conflict—one could never be too careful in the shinobi world.

A nod was all Saladin gave the bartender before taking the drink from him. More than a few times he'd considered telling his story but thought better of it just as his mouth began to grope for the right words. It no doubt gave him the appearance of fish gasping for air. Who would believe him, after all? Wearing a white canvas shirt, ripped pants, and a healthy sunburn, he did not certainly look like a man who, twenty-four hours previously, had captained one of the finest merchant vessels in the world.

Damn pirates, he thought as he tilted back his latest glass of god only knew what. Hushed voices soon returned to the tavern, though everyone seemed to be watching the lone man at the bar. Saladin, for his part, had long since stopped trying to listen in on their conversations and instead cared only for what lay at the bottom of glass.

The Crow's Nest [IO] Empty Re: The Crow's Nest [IO]

Tue Aug 28, 2018 2:23 am
A tall man entered the dingy building, which was not quite what he preferred; rather, a bustling bar with friends, comrades, and beautiful waitresses laughing and shouting over one another to be heard was more up his alley. Alas, there was nothing worth such a celebration as of late.

Rumors of the major villages mobilizing for some unknown reason had deterred many from going out to for bounties or contracts. Mice hiding from the big cats. Unlike some of his less upstanding counterparts, Sakimori instead settled on the closest tavern in order to snag himself something to drink as he just waited for it to blow past. Not out of fear, but out of a lack of desire to get into a scuffle with any villagers. He always found them to be annoyingly nationalistic, particularly that Kumo bunch that decided to invade half the world.

The man gave a look around the room, looking for anyone he might have met in his travels, to no avail. Everyone in the building seemed rather plain, until his eyes fell upon a lone man, around his own size, sitting at a bar next to a mountain of discarded glasses.

Now there’s someone who knows how to drink.

The thin and cocky smirk that always adorned his face showed itself once more as he strode over to the counter. “I’ll have what he’s having,” the mostly blond man said, sitting in the stool beside the man. He leaned his elbows forwards onto the counter, his left arm falling across to his erect right arm, which still held two fingers in the air as a gesture. “And make it a double,” he said with his thin smirk as he lowered his arm onto the counter.

The bartender seemed to perk up slightly, perhaps relieved that the other man would have this newcomer at whom to bark. He then proceeded to grab a glass from underneath the counter and began to pour the drink as Sakimori turned to the man beside him. “So, friend,” he paused as his drink was slid to him, which prompted him to grab the glass and down the burning liquid in a shot, his gaze not leaving the white haired man beside him. "You look a man with a story or two to tell." He set the glass back on the counter upside down, nodding to the bartender to fetch him another. “Care to begin?”

The Crow's Nest [IO] Empty Re: The Crow's Nest [IO]

Wed Sep 05, 2018 12:27 pm
The ebb and subsequent flow of cool night air and the dull thud of the distant door both served to announce the arrival of a newcomer, another stranger to the barkeep. The poor man's night just got better and better. First, he found himself stuck with a shipwrecked drunk and now it would seem he was to serve a strutting peacock of a man. Oh well, as long as the avian's ryo was good he couldn't complain all that much.

Saladin, for his part, did not bother sparing the newcomer a glance until he took a seat next to him. Casting a sidelong glance at the strange man, he sized up the man to his left. All it took was a look; having been a captain he had grown accustomed to judging a man by the way he presented himself. It was a skill he found handy when it came to selecting a crew from a crowd of seaman looking for their next contract. Unknowingly, the former captain came to the same conclusion as the bartender, the newcomer had a flair for the dramatic—the man's flamboyant hairstyle said it all.

The Pendragon glanced away and back down at his drink, with any luck the fool would be gone before too long. Unfortunately, the peacock had the impertinence to attempt to strike up a conversation. Draining the last of his latest glass, Saladin took a breath as if preparing himself for a long speech.

"No."

The single word fell with some finality as the bartender returned with the newcomer's drinks.

"Another one."

He directed his attention to the bartender who gave a defeated nod and went about pouring out another drink. The disgraced captain silently hoped that the newcomer would scamper off into a corner somewhere and away from him. He was now certain that any sensible person would laugh at his story, despite what the seductive whispers of drink told him to the contrary.

The Crow's Nest [IO] Empty Re: The Crow's Nest [IO]

Well, that was anticlimactic. Sakimori downed the most recent shot, setting it on the counter upside down as he had prior. The man could not help but allow the disappointment to show on his face, one corner of his mouth pulled back while the other remained still; his eyes stared forwards for a minute letting the response sink in.
For Reference:

He let out a mild sigh, signaling for the bartender for another round. “So a good story to hear is a no go. But,” the loudmouth picked up the newly poured glass, swirling it around with some finesse. “It’s just sad to drink alone.” Taking another shot, he set the glass down once more, releasing a contented sigh. “Anyways. How about a name? After all, I assume you have one.”

Sad to drink alone?

The thought had never once had the thought cross his mind; the peacock was clearly deluding himself. After all, drinking was best done alone, preferably in the dark room of one's cabin. Alas, the good captain had neither a dark cabin nor solitude. He'd have to make do with the less than desirable company, however, as the strange man clearly had no intention of leaving him alone.

"Saladin," the man sighed as if it pained him. "You?"

The man would nod along with whatever name the other man provided.

"So, what brings you to this godforsaken place?"

The bartender scoffed audibly but said nothing. He couldn't really; Saladin was right. The bar was in the middle of nowhere town on the coast. Going north would bring one to Kumogakure and going south would bring one deep into Fire country. However, as it stood, the dimly lit establishment sat outside of any official sphere of influence and escaped notice due to its lack of anything save for a healthy supply of liquor.

The Crow's Nest [IO] Empty Re: The Crow's Nest [IO]

The corner of the man’s mouth curved upwards. He was finally getting through to the loner after all. “Sakimori.” He flashed him a cocky smile as he lifted yet another glass, tipping it towards him as a gesture, careful not to let it spill. “It’s a pleasure.”

The light haired man placed his arm on the counter, resting his head against his fist as he began to lazily swirl his drink with his opposite hand. The alcohol began to form a miniature whirlpool kept within its container, the liquid splashing against the insides of the glass. “Lots of movement from the major villages.” His smirk noticeably faded at the mention of the major villages, his eyes still following the motion of his still lazily swirling drink. “Decided I didn’t want to risk getting caught up in their petty affairs.” He downed the drink setting it back on the counter beside the other empty glasses, his collection beginning to disappear as the bartender worked on rinsing and cleaning the glasses for the next round or other customers. He was no fan of the major villages, instead settling for the life of an adventurer.

Sakimori folded his arms and rested them on the counter, leaning forward slightly for comfort. “How about yourself, Saladin?” As he continued his following inquiry, his voice would pick up its usual charisma. “What brings you to the edge of the world?”

"Fine, fine," Saladin looked longingly at the bottom of yet another empty glass. "You can have your damned story."

He placed the glass on the bar with a dull thud, took a breath, and for only the second time that evening cast his gaze over to the man by his side. Perhaps if he told him a story he'd just go on his way? That was certainly the hope.

"I washed up here maybe..." he squinted up at the clock above the bar only to find his vision failing him—another drink would surely fix it. "...Well, earlier this evening. I know I don't look it, but only yesterday I captained the finest vessel to ever grace those waves."

He gestured behind him to the closed front door and the sea beyond it.

"I should be spending the night in Tea country and yet, here I am," he sighed once more—the bartender had started to listen in on the conversation. "If it weren't for those pirates I'd be sipping something quite a bit nicer than this swill."

He turned his attention to the bartender.

"Another—"

The barkeep already had a full glass waiting.

"Thank you."

His manners were starting to come back to him bit by bit. Perhaps he was drinking himself into soberness? Yeah, that makes sense, he thought as he began work on his latest glass of god only knew what. Whatever it was tasted better and better with each successive sip; all things considered, he couldn't complain that much.

Sakimori was many things. Handsome? Yes. Strong? Of course. Modest? You know it. Among the multitude of things he could be, was a barnacle. Hard to get rid of while also most likely ruining your paint job. Before he could ask any follow-up questions, one spoken word stood out to him. ‘Pirates’.

A new glass of booze lifted into the air, as Sakimori spoke, “You’re a terrible storyteller.” The aforementioned swill would then trickle down the immortal’s throat before he set the glass back down. “You cut right to the ending without any buildup. And what happened to a captain going down with his ship?” His words began to slur mildly, but his point was still getting across for now. He attempted to articulate his words further, still over exaggerating certain words. “You, my friend-” Sakimori said casually, pointing a finger towards Saladin, “-need some good old fashion revenge.”

The Crow's Nest [IO] Empty Re: The Crow's Nest [IO]

"Maybe I do," he emptied the contents of his glass. "Maybe I don't. Either way, its none of your business."

Pushing back from the bar with unsteady hands, Saladin gave the barkeep a half-hearted wave, nodded once to his one-time drinking partner, and went on his way. Not a single soul stood to oppose him and in a few stumbling steps he greeted the night air once more. If he was going to get revenge, then it sure as hell was going to be his revenge and no one else's.

Next stop?

The gutter, the best place to sleep off his liquor in relative solitude.
