Like Kindling Upon The Flame
Mon Nov 04, 2019 6:10 am
Pale dawn rose over the horizon as Calin moved toward the gates of Sunagakure. He had traveled from Tea country, chartering a boat to bring him to this place. To his knowledge, Sunagakure had no shinobi any longer. So it would be a simple matter for him to stop, get supplies, and continue on. There’d be no one to try to arrest him or something stupid like that in the process. It just meant he still got his supplies, but also left a body or three behind as charred remains that would slowly drift away into ash. An impression he would rather not leave everywhere if he could help it. The dawn arrived with the chill of night still present in the air, but Calin never felt such things any longer. He had long since absorbed Amaterasu’s fire itself into his being and his body never got cold because of it. No matter what he did, or how cold it got. He would not feel the chill. It was a nice surprise, although he doubted it would protect him from a jutsu that utilized ice, the chakra within said technique would probably supercede the passive warming of his absorbing the flames.
At this point, he’d arrive at the gates, his mind’s eye traveling out to find any sign of guard that he couldn’t see, or shinobi waiting in ambush. He’d do this even if there was a stationed guard at the entrance. It was too dangerous to assume you were only dealing with one person after all. He doubted it would be an issue though, he only intended to purchase supplies, food, water, and other such necessities before going on his travels. One could hunt of course, but having some on hand was always better in his eyes. Especially when one never knew where they would end up. He wanted to find a contract too, but he doubted he’d obtain one here. One never could tell though, so it was with some anticipation that Calin would wait at the gates of the village for a few minutes for a challenge. If none came, then he’d enter in regardless. If they couldn’t watch their own door, then that wasn’t his problem now was it?

The haggard and rather dishevelled form of The Raggedy man could be seen rather easily by almost anyone that chose to approach the main entrance of Sunagakure, simply sitting back against the smooth, black melted sandstone on the right side of the chasm. He was on the first layer of the grand ‘staircase’, putting him 10m above the entrance itself, and while he was seated in the shade he would still be plainly visible to all due to the grey clothes that he wore. His dull red eyes would be watching the sunrise over the horizon, briefly taking note of the single figure approaching from the distance, but they were still too far off for him to truly take note of their features without activating his Byakugan, something that he didn’t see the need to do when they would reach here anyway. From this distance all he could see was the fact that the figure was quite a bit larger than most, perhaps even equal to his own old form… but this one was far more muscular than he had been then and even more so than he was now.
As he got closer he could make out far more details, the shoulder length black hair that almost seemed to imitate a cowl, the red overcoat adorned with what appeared to be silver… but what truly stood out to Kenshin was how the man walked. He almost seemed to ooze confidence, and he moved with the grace of a true predator… and as he continued to get closer Kenshin would begin to feel his chakra signature. Not quite as powerful as his own, but equal to that of Kutari, and superior to anyone within the walls of Sunagakure… how very interesting… could this man be a foolish hunter that was after the bounty that had been placed on ‘Kenshin’? Could he be seeking him out for a different reason? Or was he simply a traveller looking to visit the village, gather supplies and leave. There were a great many possibilities for why this powerful stranger was coming towards his village, and there were a great many more ways that this meeting could end up playing out. As the stranger got within 20m of the gates the dishevelled guard would release a loud groan and begin to speak.
“That’s close enough stranger. Gonna need your name and your reason for coming here. I’m sure you can tell that the village is going through some issues based on our surroundings alone.” The hoarse and rather gravelly voice of the man would call out calmly, simply eyeing the man that stood so calmly amid the field of corpses. That wasn’t even getting into the blackened and somewhat melted nature of the wall that he sat upon.

The broad shouldered man would stop his walking at the voice of the one who spoke. The man sitting against the wall of a half melted part of the wall, an indention quite large that would allow him to do so quite comfortably Calin would imagine. Calin would study the man carefully, he felt no chakra emanating from him. Nor could he hear the man’s breathing, if he couldn’t have seen the man outright from his perch then the fire user wouldn’t even have known he was there. It was impressive, and that alone denoted training of some form. Was he suppressing his chakra? Potentially, but why? One wanted their front guards to be powerful, it denoted strength of the forces to those looking in. It said ‘If this is the power of our gate watchers, what else do we have for you to contend with?’ to anyone looking to assault the village. Hell, the signs of an assault were abound. Corpses littered the field around them, but none of that mattered to Calin. He eyed the burned and melted wall with a professionals eye, judging the strength of the fire used. He could do better, oh yes, he could do far better indeed.
However, the village was standing, meaning it had clearly held back such an assault. Or had it? Was the man before him a shinobi of the village? One left behind that Calin hadn’t heard of, were there more? Was the suppression of the man’s chakra in that case, an attempt to keep shinobi hidden from the world? Effectively allowing this place to become to first actually ‘hidden’ village in the world? Or had this man been apart of those who had attacked this place? Taking their rightful place as this villages new overlords? He didn’t know, and frankly, he simply didn’t care. “Calin Uesugi, passing through for supplies, maybe find a contract or two while I’m here.” He would say, simple, and to the point. His eyes never straying from the strangers form. The corpses upon the ground around him didn’t matter, they were dead, and therefore meant nothing. He’d keep his mind’s eye open, and his other senses sharp for signs of possible attack. If this man was one of the destroyers, he might want to kill Calin, even if just for the enjoyment of doing so. Or for his money, his now openly stated intent to gain supplies suggested that he had money after all. It was a way for a clever bandit to ensure his efforts weren’t for naught. “You do this?” He’d ask idly, his tone tinged with curiosity.

Hmm, so the man was apparently just a simple traveller… and based on his statement, it seemed that he was in need of some work… interesting, and certainly useful to know. He certainly fit the bill of the type of person that Kenshin wanted to work with him, professional and certainly not squeamish if his casual dismissal of the hundreds of staked corpses that surrounded them was any indication. Calin, if that was indeed his name (and really, what reason would the man have to lie), was certainly someone that could be either an ally or a threat… and really, The Raggedy Man was not the type to simply leave wild cards like that in play. He would either ally with him or he would be simply another corpse to be added to his collection… so really, he would be joining one of The Ragdolls collections one way or another. Of course, there was no way that he would reveal this to the man in question, as loyalty bought through fear was quite weak when truly put to the test… just as weak as loyalty that was purchased… but then again, he truly doubted that this Calin was the type of man that would allow himself to serve another out of fear. When the man asked whether he did this a simple chuckle would leave his mouth, and while the laughter was still leaving his mouth he would reach into his jacket and withdraw his flask.
“Nah, this ain’t my work. This is the work of my boss, Kenshin Uzumaki, S-rank Missing Ninja of Hoshigakure, better known to the world at large by his title, The Ragdoll. I could go on some big spiel about who he is and why he did this, but the long and short of it is that he was bored and wanted a challenge… but what he found was the furthest thing from it. Heh, as it turns out the rank and file shinobi of Kumogakure are little more than paper soldiers… weaklings not even fit to guard the gates of their village, and these are the very same people they sent to hold their supposed empire together… the boss tore through them without even needing to think about trying” The seemingly grizzled ‘older’ shinobi would state as he casually opened the flask and took a healthy swig, pulling it away from his mouth with a relieved sigh and moving to stand up. He would move until he was standing right on the edge of the ‘staircase’, and from there he would simply hold his stare on Calin for a few moments, no words being said as the two of them simply observed each other. The Reaper was the first to avert his eyes, releasing a rather heavy sigh before looking back.
“Look, you’re obviously a mercenary… and the boss has a pretty hefty bounty on his head. I’ve got orders not to stop ya if ya really want in… but lemme give ya some advice, from one merc to another. This is one bounty you don’t wanna take, I can guarantee that as you are now you wouldn’t last more than a few seconds against him… he’s the definition of a Monster, and while I can sense you’re powerful… you’re but a child to him.” The Reaper would state in an almost tired voide, his performance as flawless as one would expect from a perfectionist like him. Not a single movement was out of place, and in the end he would come off as nothing more than a tired old man that had seen too much. Was it arrogant of him to state what he had about himself to this man? Perhaps? Was said arrogance unwarranted? Not in the slightest. He was one of the most powerful shinobi in the world, perhaps even the MOST powerful, and he knew that full well… there was a reason that he had been marked down as an S-rank threat after-all. But now he had to convince the man to work for him, and most mercenaries and criminals shared one very common and very exploitable trait… a dislike of the village system. He had already mentioned Kenshin’s butchering of Kumogakure, so he simply needed to keep that train going in the same direction
“...Ahh, ya know what, I don’t think you’re dumb enough to try it… probably wouldn’t have lasted quite so long if ya were, or gotten anywhere near as powerful as you have. The boss is always looking for skilled people to work for him… and I’m pretty sure he has some big shit in the works… shit that will make him an even bigger enemy to the ‘Great Villages’.” The supposed mercenary would then state, his tone becoming obviously mocking when he mentioned the villages. A dark grin would split his face as his eyes seemed to become wilder, but he would make no move to approach Calin or even leave his current position.
“I know I said I wouldn’t get into some spiel about the boss’s goals, but let me tell ya what he’s done already. He was the former commander of Hoshigakure’s Nova Corps, the villages answer to the more traditionally used Anbu, and when he defected he walked right out the front gates… and not a single person tried to stop him. After that he took over the Black Market of Shadow Country, butchering every person in charge save one… and after he got bored, he gave that man control again and left for Rain Country. Rain was part of Kumogakure’s empire, but he wanted to test the strength of their so called empire… and after killing all but one of Kumogakure’s shinobi in Rain Country he came here and repeated the process. After he took Suna he decided to start building it up and gathering followers, all the while sending letters to the Raikage to mock him, even going so far as to send the man the head of the shinobi he left in charge of Suna.” The man would then state, releasing a few almost manic giggles as he took yet another swig from his flask, his wild eyes focussing on Calin again once he had done so.
“Eventually, he became such a large threat that they must have reached out to both Konoha and Kiri for help, since both villages showed up and tried to destroy Suna… but the moment he stepped onto the battlefield they fled with their tails between their legs. The Legendary Mizukage, Xyxer Gyojin, the man hailed as The Leviathan of Kirigakure and the man that almost single handedly conquered Konoha… ran like a little bitch. But rather than pushing the offensive… he chose to stay here in this husk of a village, biding his time and gathering forces once again. Tell me… does that sound like something a man without a plan would do? Because to me… it sounds like he is planning something big…” He would then finish, his almost manic eyes seeming to regain some of their clarity as he shook his head lightly, releasing a small groan as he did so.
“... Heheh, sorry bout that, tend to get a bit worked up when it comes to the boss and the villages.” He would then awkwardly state, rubbing the back of head in an embarrassed manner

The man would deny any involvement in the destruction of the area. He would however confirm that the village had been taken over by one ‘Kenshin Uzumaki’. Calin had seen the man’s wanted poster. There was quite a tidy sum attached to his head, but there was an interesting fact about Calin that this raggedy man didn’t know. You see, Calin wasn’t a bounty hunter. He was a mercenary. There was a distinct difference, bounty hunters went after individuals and turned their heads into those who would pay for it. Mercenary’s took any job that they chose. That didn’t necessarily mean he wouldn’t take a bounty if the pay was good. However it was much more dangerous for him to do so. He himself was a missing ninja in the eyes of the villages. It was the villages who would pay for the bounty. If he turned up in their village with his corpse, he’d probably be detained and killed himself. After all, he’d by that point prove to be a bigger danger than even their most terrifying boogeyman. No, if he tried to go after Kenshin Uzumaki, even if he won, he couldn’t profit from it. Which was the entire point of it for him. He’d listen to the man’s speech about his boss. Were they the words of a sycophant perhaps? Potentially, but Calin would have his curiosity piqued at the fact that even with his Mind’s Eye active, he couldn’t sense this man’s chakra. The man’s movement closer was utterly devoid of sound as well. His eyes narrowed as he considered these tells.
Without the ability to sense the man’s chakra with his Mind’s Eye, he couldn’t tell if he was lying about anything. What reason would a gate guard of all things, have to hide his ability to lie? The Mind’s Eye technique, allowed him to sense everything down to suppressed chakra, unless there was something preventing even those tells from being picked up by the jutsu. It would almost have to be designed specifically with that goal in mind in fact. To hide from any kind of chakra sensory skill, even that of a jutsu as versatile and useful as Mind’s Eye of The Kagura. Which would inherently allow anyone with such an ability to lie outright to such a user. The question now, became whether or not the man before him knew he was using it or not. Could he be lying to him? Could he be waiting for Calin to turn his back on him, to attack him and loot him? Could he be Kenshin Uzumaki himself, playing games with visitors? At that point the earlier sycophancy would turn to arrogance, but not arrogance without backing. Especially if what he had said was true.
Calin wasn’t sure who this man was, what his talents were, or if he intended any ill toward him. He couldn’t figure it out unless he got started though. Calin would smirk, taking a flask of his own from his pocket and taking a pull from it. “Bounty hunting is too risky, besides, where would I cash in on a corpse like Uzumaki’s? I’d be dead before I left with the money if I went to any villages. They’d be too afraid of someone who could kill him. Nah, no worries from me on that front. If he wants to hire me though, I’d be open. Work is work, and the only kind I won’t dabble in is slave trading. So as long as his ‘big plans’ don’t involve that, then I don’t really give a damn so long as I get paid.” He would say after his drink. “Tell your boss to look into my name if he wants, it’s well known in circles. He’ll find that once I’m bought, I stay that way, regardless of the weight of any counter offers. So, may I come in and get my supplies now?” He would ask, an inquisitive eyebrow raised.

The Raggedy Man would watch curiously as the man that stood so casually amongst a sea of corpses simply smirked in response to his little act, and a small, gruff chuckle would escape his parted lips as the man saw fit to retrieve a flask of his own. If nothing else he was certainly amusing, but for now he simply needed to hear just what the man had to say in response to his own words… for they would determine just which of his collections the man would be joining. As the man declared bounty hunting to be too risky a point was deducted within the mind of The Reaper… and another two were deducted when he began to explain just why he wouldn’t pose a threat to Kenshin. Was he truly so ill connected and dense that he believed the only people willing to pay for his head would be those within the walls of the villages? Did he believe such a foolish thought to actually be the truth? Or was he perhaps under the impression that both ‘Kenshin’ and ‘Stark’ were idiots that wouldn’t question him? He had outright mentioned how ‘his boss’ had taken control of one of the largest and most well connected Black Market hubs in the nations, butchering everyone in charge save one, then simply left. Did he believe that such an act wouldn’t have earned the man some rather large enemies in the darker corners of the nations? Enemies that possessed far more in the way of money than he could ever hope to possess.
Yet another point was deducted when the man began to explain his thoughts on what the villages, or anyone really, would do if he actually managed to succeed in killing him… he seemed to be under the impression that the very villages that were unwilling to send their own forces to die by his hand would be willing to send their forces to kill the one that slayed him. How utterly laughable. All in all, the man was well on his way to joining his more macabre collection, but there was still a chance that he could say something that would result in him being spared… he simply needed to make himself valuable enough as an ally that his death wouldn’t be worth it. As he mentioned that he was more than willing to work for his ‘employer’ if he was paid enough, but as he mentally noted earlier… loyalty that was purchased was actually quite weak when it was TRULY put to the test. Most of the more well known mercenaries were well known for their loyalty once a contract was formed… but that certainly didn’t mean that they were truly loyal to the causes that they ‘pledged’ themselves to, and in the end that simply wasn’t something Kenshin was interested him. He was more than aware of what the more self serving would be willing to do for a quick and easy payday… he was one of them after-all, and in the end there was very little that he would truly be unwilling to sacrifice for his own gain.
That point was further solidified when he mentioned that he was unwilling to perform anything along the lines of slave trading, a field that he admittedly held very little interest in, but the point remains the same. The man still possessed something in the way of morals, and he seemed to be unwilling to compromise them for a payday of any kind… and well, in the end it just proved that there were indeed some lines the man would simply refuse to cross… orders that he wouldn’t be willing to follow under any circumstances. Did he expect true loyalty of that level from his own followers? No… but he was not paying them, and if he was paying for services then he expected his orders to be followed without question… yet this man had the gall to outright say that he was for sale yet he wouldn’t accept certain orders. What if in the future he was indeed paying the man and he decided that he wanted more money to fulfill certain orders, or began to add more things to this list of lines that he wouldn’t cross? That simply wouldn’t work out well for him. As Calin continued to speak ‘Stark’ would raise his right hand in front of his face, observing it for a moment as his sharp red eyes came to focus on the still talking form of Calin… the man had exhausted any and all chances.
In an instant the form of ‘Stark’ would begin to shift, his skin losing any traces of a tan and black veins becoming visible through his skin… his sclera would turn black and both of his eyes would turn a sickly and somewhat glazed gold colour… and a thick tar like substance would begin to flow from his eyes like tears. The moment that his skin began to lose its tone the fingers of his right hand would begin to shift in shape, extending in length and turning into blades sharper than even the greatest of swords. And, to finish the combination off, before the transformation was complete the transforming hand would be shot forth from the body of The Raggedy Man, tearing itself completely from the rest of the body as the threads within propelled it forth at great speeds… so great in fact that they would manage to reach the man before he even finished talking. If the limb reached him it would simply continue forth, his bladed fingers slicing through his neck and jaw like a hot knife through butter, completely detaching his head from the rest of his body and sending blood spurting from what remained of his neck as his head simply fell onto the sand below. The entirety of his neck, and most of the man's jaw, would have been shredded, but the rest of his head, including his eyes, would have been left perfectly intact.
If this came to pass The Immortal would simply release a small sigh of disappointment and retract his limb, but if it didn’t then he would simply change his own actions to fit whatever his opponent did.

(48 houring and claiming the death of Calin)
And with that the tale of Calin came to an end, the arrogant mercenary eliminated before he could even comprehend that his ‘opponent’ had launched an attack. The Reaper always hated having to end the lives of those that could be powerful allies to him in the future… but what he hated even more was leaving powerful wildcards like those in play. Truth be told he wouldn’t have minded paying Calin for his services if the man had actually proved himself worthy of it… if he had actually survived this little test… but in the end it seemed that the man wasn’t quite as powerful as The Immortal had suspected. Oh well, it wasn’t as if he had lost anything… he had actually gained a new corpse that could be added to his collection and new parts that he could sell for profit… a winning scenario to be sure, but the victory both felt hollow AND wasn’t the type of victory he had been hoping for. Killing was easy and as such he was never truly short on supplies… but valued and powerful allies were quite hard to come across. Once his arm was fully retracted Kenshin would deactivate both his Corrupted Sage Mode and his Sage Transformation, before hopping down from the walls and casually strolling to the headless corpse of The Mercenary.
When he reached the corpse he would divest the corpse of the ryo pouch that it held, along with all the weapons and items that he could find, before pulling his Macabre Bag from his Storage Displacement. He would pull one of his empty scrolls from within and open it on the sand in front of him, before pulling Calins corpse on top… and using a couple of his threads to stitch the jawless head directly onto where the mans neck used to reside. With a small application of chakra the corpse would be sealed away, and using one of his threads alone with some of the mans blood he would simply write the name ‘Calin’ on the corpse. With that done the man would place the scroll within the bag, and send it back to his storage displacement… before simply retaking his position near the gates, waiting for any and all travellers to approach.

Claiming the corpse of Calin Uetsugi. Due to Valen leaving the way he did the stat page of the character is gone, so I will only be claiming stuff that I can prove he had to avoid confusion.
First things first, the corpse itself. Calin was an Uchiha with Mangekyo Sharingan, and he had 6 Blindness Counters. Proof
61,950 ryo (explained below)
1 katana
1 summoning ring
5 weapon pouches
15 kunai
2 military rations pills
5 explosive tag
4 smoke bombs
2 corpse storage scrolls
10 shuriken
4 meters of wire
Alucard
Mochi
3 Shinobi Headbands (Konoha)
Shinobi ID of Chuuta Pendragon
Shinobi ID of Kizaru Komori
Shinobi ID of Yoi Yuki
Proof of the above items.
5 Corpse Storage Scrolls. Proof
Risky Pole
Fishing Gear
Proof
61,950 ryo can be proved based off the proof above. Calin's last purchase was the Risky Pole and Fishing Gear, bringing his total down to 49,050, but when he robbed Chuuta, Yoi and Kizaru he gained 12,900, bringing the total to 61,950
