Round Up
“Attention! Katsu shouted, seemingly at nobody in particular as he stood in the middle of the street. “Masaru we got a mission! Doggie and kitty wrangling, which sounds like a dumb mission, we are genin! Master’s of the art of battle!” Katsu turned his head slightly in thought, “Okay, maybe not masters…” Katsu recieved a few strange looks, and a number of people had stopped, looking at him thinking him crazy. Katsu paid them no mind.
Masaru on the other hand was very irritated with his brother. “You are making a scene!” Masaru stepped out of his brother, the two of them looking nearly identical and glared at him. Those who had stopped to gawk at the loud boy now completely lost for words, and deciding it was best to avoid whatever was happening.
“You made it worse.” Katsu stuck his tongue out at his brother. “Anyway, to the mission at hand. We need to round up some animals. Let's split up and get to work.” He headed off to the left, not waiting for a response. Of the two Masaru was far more responsible so, annoyed or not, Katsu knew he would do his job.
Masaru let out a soft growl of annoyance at his brother’s antics, but turned and headed off in the opposite direction from him. His brother may be loud and annoying, but for once he seemed to actually be willing to put in some work. This was a good chance for Masaru to try and one up his brother by catching more strays.
As Masaru ran he tried to keep his steps quiet doing his best to listen for anything that might signal a nearby animal. He kept to the less traveled areas in the village, assuming that animals would likely avoid heavily trafficked areas. He came to a sudden stop as he heard a crashing sound on his right. He stepped quietly, peering out of a small alley to see a large dog rummaging through a garbage can it had just knocked over. It looked to weigh about 60 pounds as it pushed its nose around in the rubbish sniffing and searching for food.
Masaru crept out of the alley, trying to get as close as possible before the dog noticed him. He only took three steps, leaving a good ten feet between him and the dog before it became stark still. It immediately spun around, looking directly at Masaru. Masaru froze in place watching to see what the dog would do, trying his best not to scare it off. To his suprise instead of running away the dog sprinted forward, leaping up and slamming into him. He was bowled over, his arms out trying to hold the dog back as he lay underneath it. He could feel its hot breath on his face as he pushed, trying to shove the dog off of him. His right arm moved up from the dogs torso toward its head so that he could keep it from biting him. He wasn’t fast enough though, its head shot forward and a tongue lapped out leaving his face wet, as the dog slobbered and licked him happily.
Masaru’s first instinct was to yell out, expecting teeth, but the yell died before it left his mouth as he was licked over and over again. He felt like an idiot. It could have turned out the way he had feared, but the dog was just happy to see a person. This wasn’t some crazed animal out for blood, just a hungry lonely pup. He moved his hands up, one scratching its head as the other pushed its head back a bit. He laughed ”Okay okay, that’s enough. It is nice to meet you too.” He pulled himself out from under the dog and got to his knees. The dog looked at him, its head shifting slightly to the side in curiosity as Masaru pulled out a small length of rope and tied it loosely around the dog’s torso. As he did so, he spoke in a calming voice. “Come along little pup. Let's get you some food. Does that sound good?” The dog wagged its tail and to Masaru it seemed like it could understand him.
He made his way back toward where he and Katsu had split ways, stopping briefly as he passed a shop to grab a sausage for the good boy.
Katsu sprinted through the city, looking every which way for a stray animal. “Here kitty kitty! Doggo! Oh pupper head!” With each location he passed through he shouted getting mean looks and a few rude gestures from the others in the area as he startled and irritated passersby. “Sir Barks-a-lot! Where are you!?”
Eventually his energy started to wear down. He had covered nearly half the city and still he couldn’t find an animal. He slumped against a wall, irritated. At this rate Masaru was going to finish the mission without him. He stared as his feet, demoralized and finally quiet. This sucks. His head drooped a bit more. No I can’t give up, I have to beat Masaru! The fires of determination burned through his veins. He was just about to jump back up when he felt something soft brush his arm. He tilted his head slowly to the right and found a grey cat pushing its head into his arm, wanting attention and pets. He had spent what felt like forever looking for an animal, and when he finally stopped, one had come to him, of course. I should have sat in a slump an hour ago!
He smiled at the kitty, moving the arm it pushing against in order to scratch its head. The cat immediately jumped back, startled by the movement. Grrrr you came up to me kitty! Be calm Katsu, don’t scare it off. He made a high clicking sound, trying to call the cat back, leaving his hand out but not making any motion toward the cat.
Once again the cat came forward and brushed into his hand, letting him make small movements as he pet the cat. “Hello little kitty. He smiled and kept his voice gentle. “Do you want to come with me and find a nice home?” He continued to scratch the kitties head, and its wariness seemed to fade as it climbed into Katsu’s lap.
After a minute or so passed like this, Katsu decided it was time to finish up the mission. He moved his hands gently under the kitty and lifted it up as he stood. The cat went from calm and sweet to a maniacal monster instantly. Its claws shot out into Katsu as it let out a yowling sound. “Ouch! Dear lord why!? He held on to the struggling cat, small cuts appear on his hand that was holding it. He could feel its back claws as they poked through his shirt and raked across his stomach. He gritted his teeth and took off at a sprint to turn in the mission, and the small devil he had apprehended. With each step he felt more pain, but he would persevere. He couldn’t fail. His brother would never let him hear the end of it if he did.
Katsu saw his brother waiting for him, a large dog in tow, but he didn’t stop as he ran past. “Devil cat!” Was all that he said as he passed, the cat still yowling and struggling as he went. A minute or so later he reached the pound, shoving the cat into the waiting attendants arms. “It’s a monster!” He stepped back, cuts on his hands and a few on his stomach from its back claws. He panted, happy to be rid of the beast.
His brother appeared behind him moments later and looked to the attendant, who was petting the calm cat. “Devil cat?” He looked to his brother who was scowling at the beast. His voice came out sullen and annoyed, “It is. It looks cute now, but that thing is a beast.” His voice grew loud as he glared at it, “A BEAST I SAY!”
Msaru shrugged and delivered the dog to the attendant once he had placed the cat in a cage. “Here is a pup. He is a good boy. I gave him something to eat, but I think he is probably still hungry.” He looked down at the pup as it wagged its tail, looking between him and the attendant. “You be good okay?” He patted it on its head, then turned back to his brother. “My animal is bigger, so I win.”
Katsu stared at him, “Size doesn’t matter. We both got one, it is a tie. Besides yours is sweet, mine was a monster. If anything I win!”
Masaru growled, “What!? Of course size matters!
The two continued to bicker as the attendant took the two animals inside, leaving them to there nonsense.

You are forgetting to claim stats on top of that- since the wc for the mission is 500 you get 1 stat point since in missions the ratio is 400 words to 1. Past that requirement the rest of the words are based on the standard ratio of 200 words to 1. So you are owed 5 stat points of your choosing.
