A Chuunin's Duty (Kenshin)
Sat Oct 24, 2020 10:55 pm
“Raleth… until further notice you are a Chunin of Sunagakure. You will need to earn your rank back, and while your actions so far have been exemplary you will need to prove that this type of thing will not happen again. Mizuki will be the one to decide when you are ready for Jounin rank once more… good luck my friend.”
The words of his Kazekage, the daunting figure known as Kenshin Uzumaki, echo in the back of Raleth Sarutobi's mind as he gets ready. He wears a black quarter sleeve under his dune colored flak jacket, black pants, and his black ninja sandals. He drapes a sea-green, sky-blue trimmed sarutobi clan kimono on his shoulders, ensuring his immense presence and size would look less intimidating. His mind is blank as he dresses himself, his thoughts preoccupied with the his meeting with his Kazekage a few days ago.
Truth be told, it went better than expected. His worries and fears were unjustified, Kenshin Uzumaki was a pragmatic and reasonable man, and his order to demote the white-ash-haired Sarutobi was something that Raleth accepted without protest. As he goes to his garden to grab a handful of apples, pears, and peaches, he thinks on the words of his old student, Zaine.
It's possible you haven't fully accepted your roll as Jounin.
A hefty sigh escapes the immense chuunin as he grabs his wide brim, straw hat. He turns down his street, away from the familiar smell of tea on the wind, toward a part of the village he rarely frequents. As he strolls and traverses the biome-cooled roads of Sungakure, he spots the white-brickwork of the hospital, and hopes the doctors and nurses would accept his aid. As he walks through the sliding doors, the sterilized air breezes past his body, a shiver runs up Raleth's spine.
The attendant at the front desk, a young man who looks as if he's somewhere else, spots an immense shinobi walking up from the front door. Though his face is obscured by his straw hat, the young man recognizes the features, build, and stature of a suna-nin known as Cliff-Splitter. Word had come in that he had been demoted to Chuunin, and many in the village wondered how he had been taking it. Fear flashed in the young man's eyes as Cliff-Splitter loomed over him, did the ex-jounin want to repeat his actions at the Grove in the Hospital? Cliff-splitter speaks, his voice having a surprisingly warm and gentle tone.
"This may be a strange question, but is there anyone who needs assistance? I'm not proficient in it, but I do know basic medical ninjutsu."
Before the attendant could respond, Cliff-Splitter extends his hand and opens his palms. A calm aura of stone-colored chakra bathes the large hands of the shinobi, its flow and movement would remind someone of warm sand shifting from a soft breeze. Though the chakra flowing was not intense, its control could only be described as careful. The sight would surprise the attendant; based on the many rumors he would have heard, he would never have expected Cliff-Splitter to have such a skill.
As Raleth finishes demonstrating his Basic Medial Ninjutsu, he stops the flow of his chakra and waits for a response: hoping that he could help his village.

Shouto eyed the intimidating figure in front of him with a small hint of fear, he was quite new at this and was only filling in for the usual receptionist, Mia, because she was sick. He had never really had much of a reason to interact with the shinobi of Sunagakure and truthfully that suited him just fine… he didn’t understand much about Chakra and how it allowed mortals to perform divine feats. It was… eerie to him, and despite knowing full well that these shinobi were the protectors of Sunagakure they were still something unknown to him… something beyond him and beyond regular folk, and because of that he would never truly be able to come to trust them in the same way that he could trust others. He was well aware that this was not the fault of the shinobi themselves, and he would never truly hold this sort of thing against them, it was simply his view on shinobi and chakra users in general.
“If you wish to help out in the hospital you’ll need to speak to Kenshin, he’s in charge of the hospital. Follow the black line on the floor and it will take you to the morgue, he tends to spend most of his time in there.” He would explain, his voice not exactly nervous but at the same time not entirely confident. Truthfully… of all the shinobi he had met, Kenshin was the one that disturbed him the most… there was something wholly unnatural about the man, and just being around him was enough to make him feel almost physically ill. But… regardless of that gut feeling, the man was The Kazekage and was in charge in charge of the entire shinobi corps… and on top of that, was the man that personally oversaw the Sunagakure Medical Corps. The unnatural man had done a lot for the village, and while he did indeed respect him for it… he could not bring himself to truly trust him. He had seen The Monster that took Sunagakure, had been one of the residents that remembers The Butcher, and while it was obvious that he was a changed man… that didn’t change what he had done when he initially took the village.
---------------------------------------------
Within his office in the morgue Kenshin could be seen with his back to the door, standing over the table at the far end of the room and scribbling some notes down. Within the room itself, on one of the draining tables, lay a body with the chest cavity open, obviously recently autopsied. The Reaper was clad in a simple, long sleeved black robe, and his silver mane flowed down his back freely, the hair reaching his lower back and was styled in no particular way.
The corpse in question belonged to a Sunagakure resident, nobody of major importance but the death had been unexpected, and he had been believed to have been in fine health before his body had been discovered. In reality, the man was anything but healthy, a plethora of defects in his body including adult congenial heart disease, which he believed to be the cause of his sudden and unexpected passing. There was no sign of any foul play, no traces of toxins or foreign chakra in his system… overall, just an man that had been dealt and unfortunate hand in life and eventually lost that battle.

The morgue?
The thought of seeing Kenshin again was something that made Raleth nervous. Not because he didn't want to see his kazekage, but because he himself did not know the tall Uzumaki's opinion of the newly-demoted chuunin. He had hoped he would have been able to repair some of his reputation before meeting with the man, especially since their last conversation included him being demoted. Worry clouds the Sarutobi's brows, he shakes away the thoughts.
As the attendant mentions it, Raleth eyes the blackline on the white-tiled floor. It travels down a sterilized hallway and makes a sharp right turn, it continues deeper into the hospital. In the distance, the sounds of machines and apparatuses echo. Cliffsplitter returns his attention to the attendant, giveing the young man a farewell and a thank you for directing him to Kenshin. He walks away from the front desk and follows the blackline.
Nurses flit from room to room as white-ash-haired Sarutobi walks his way to the morgue. Behind closed door, he hears sounds of happiness and wellness, of good news and congratulations. Raleth turns right, a clean breeze sends an uncomfortable chill up his spine. The air hangs still, the occasional sob is drowned out by the rhythmic beeps of machines, the immense chuuin shivers from an unknown breeze. The beeping pace slows, the silence between them becomes deafening, Raleth Sarutobi faces the cold steel doors of the morgue.
Behind the frost-coated metal, Raleth can feel an intense presence, the overwhelming, yet calm, chakra of Kenshin Uzumaki. Though he has met the man numerous times, the pressure he feels is something he cannot get used to. Able to properly analyze the feeling, the white-ash-haired Sarutobi comes to a realization. The intensity he feels is not one of something brandishing its power, but something doing its best to mask it. The thought and feeling makes him hesitate, he winces as his fingers touch the frost-bitten handle. The immense chuunin pushes his way through the doors, a vision of the reaper in his house of death greets him.
A tall and slender, silver-maned figure looms over a malformed corpse, the Kazekage prods, pokes, and examines what's in front of him. He moves with the precision and grace of one accustomed to death's face, look lost in the peace brought to him by his work. Almost forgetting himself, Raleth kneels to the ground and plants his fist to the earth.
"Lord Kazekage, it's good to see you. I was told I could be of some service to you."
After his announcement, Raleth stands and walks to the silver-maned Uzumaki. He quickly scans the corpse on the table, he grimaces at the dead flesh. His thoughts wander to how this man could of died, as he sees no external signs of trauma. Though, the man looked as if he hadn't had healthy eating habits. Perhaps that was why he died? Raleth's couldn't know for sure, his knowledge in medical ninjutsu was lacking. Though, his chakra control was much better. Faced with Kenshin, the head of the Medical Corps, Raleth hopes an opportunity will arise, one where he would be able to learn more of the medical ways. If asked what his skills were, Raleth would demonstrate; opening his palm and flowing stone-colored chakra to his hand, displaying his prowess in Basic Medical Ninjutsu: the only healing based jutsu he knows.

Kenshin would turn his head to face Raleth as he heard the man speak, peeking at him over his shoulder with a small smirk on his face. He had felt the man approaching, and truthfully he was glad for it, he wanted to get to know the older Sarutobi a little better, and on top of that wanted to make sure the man didn’t have any hard feelings with his recent demotion. The words that he spoke were of interest though… for him to have been sent to him here and now… he must have wanted to help out in The Hospital, not exactly something he would have expected from the man given what he had come to learn of him so far. How very interesting.
“Raleth… this is a pleasant surprise. Would I be correct in assuming that you were sent here because you wished to help out in the hospital?” The Reaper would ask after turning to face the man, a small smile on his face as he spoke. Truth be told it was quite easy to figure out exactly why he had been directed to him here and now, and it involved a specific set of orders he had given those who worked within this hospital, the first of which was easily the most important. Anyone that wished to help in the treatment of patients through the use of Medical Ninjutsu had to be personally approved by him… and the second, unless it was a true emergency he was to be left alone whilst within The Morgue. The third was a slight exemption as it allowed the receptionists to direct those who wished to purchase transplants to him, but none of those had ever said they had been sent here because they ‘may be of use’.

The voice of Kenshin Uzumaki sounded like a cold and bitter wind, one that made Raleth shiver in the freezing morgue. He turns to face the Sarutobi, his movements are precise yet erratic, like a marionette: as if his muscles were being pulled and tugged instead of contracting and relaxing. A small smile washes over the tall figure's face, something about how his skin twists and folds to make such an expression unnerves the immense chuunin.
Raleth, having been a martial artist and a taijutsu master for many years, was someone who could read body language, to a level that allowed him figure out someone's feelings, emotions, or intentions. As he gazes upon the expression of Kenshin, Raleth realizes what he sees seems forced. Not intentionally so, but definitely not natural, as if the physiology of the man in front of him was...something else. Unease hangs on the Sarutobi's shoulders, the intense pressure from Kenshin was almost dizzying, he speaks to calm his own growing worry.
"Yes," thrums the warm, basso voice of the Sarutobi in the morgue, "I was directed here by the young man at the front desk. I wish to be of better service to the village, and I want to further my knowledge in medical ninjutsu. I didn't expect you to be here here, Lord Uzumaki."

Kenshin would be able to read the unsease plaguing the Sarutobi who stood before him as though he was an open book, the mans body language and microexpressions quite well controlled… but his eyes spoke tales of their own. He wasn’t too sure exactly what it was that was causing this level of unease, but truth be told he suspected it was due to their surroundings. Most people were quite uneasy when surrounded by so much death, and he knew that Raleth had been the teacher of Zaine, who himself was someone quite pacifistic. It would make a lot of sense, even if he personally didn’t understand why people were so scared of death… in the end it was simply an inevitable fact of life, no matter how long lived one is.
“Ahh, I see. Not many know this, but while I may be the Kazekage, that is not my only role in the village. I am in charge of the Medical Corps, and I have personally overseen the training of all of the Medical Ninjutsu specialists that work within the hospital. Medical Ninjutsu is actually the field I am most proficient in, and while I am indeed a powerful Ninjutsu user my mastery of it is pale in comparison to the level of mastery I have over Medical Ninjutsu.” The Ragdoll would explain, his smile soft as he spoke to the unnerved Chunin that stood before him.
“So, if you wish to help out in the hospital I will need to see how proficient you are in the field of Medical Ninjutsu, so why don’t you show me the most advanced technique you know.” The Reaper would ask, taking a step back to watch what whatever it was that Raleth chose to perform.

As Kenshin Uzumaki speaks, the unease that hangs on Raleth's shoulders grow. His mouth moved in a precise fashion, his voice, though being produced by his throat, seemed to come from somewhere else, the Sarutobi was reminded of a ventriloquist controlling a wooden doll. The uncanny look and sound of the slender figure was more than unnerving, the immense, ash-haired shinobi has to shake th feeling off.
"Its good to know the village is in the capable hands of a Kage with your prowess. I had heard of your proficiency with ninjutsu, but was unaware of your expertise in medical ninjutsu, perhaps you heal the damage you deal?"
As the slender Uzumaki asks Raleth to demonstrate his most advanced medical ninjutsu, the Sarutobi pauses to think. When it came to healing jutsu, Raleth was sorely lacking. His mind combs through the techniques he knows, and settles on the only applicable advanced medical ninjutsu he knows. He brings his hands to his side, and inhales through his nose. The intake of breath causes his chakra to circulate, it streams through the network at an efficient rate. He exhales, and flows his energy to his shoulders and down his arms, pooling and gathering the chakra in his palms. The energy flows around his digits, stone-colored chakra radiates from his hands, extending two inches from his fingers. Raleth displays his Chakra Scalpel, and Kenshin would note that the edge of the scalpel was more refined than the average shinobi, its sharpness would be equal to 60.
"This is not the only advanced medical ninjutsu I know, but this would be the only one that could aid a doctor or nurse."
Raleth halts the flow of chakra to his hands once Kenshin has finished his observations, and dissipates the Chakra Scalpels.

The Ragdoll would allow a small smirk to form on his face as Raleth complimented him, and then proceeded to ponder whether he used Medical Ninjutsu to heal the damage that he deals. It was interesting to think about really, but it wasn’t really that accurate of a theory. He would stay silent until Raleth demonstrated his technique, the Chakra Scalpel, not the most advanced technique nor the best use of it he had ever seen, but it was still a fair bit better than the standard shinobi’s, something that spoke of the refined chakra control the older man must possess.
“Medical Ninjutsu is the field I have focused on since I first became a shinobi, it is the field I have always possessed the most skill in and to this day is the field that holds the majority of my interest. Destruction is easy… any brute can master Ninjutsu to the same extent that I have, because it requires the bare minimum of chakra control, but very few have the patience or the talent to perform Medical Ninjutsu of the same level, let alone Medical Ninjutsu of the same level of proficiency. I had always been fascinated in learning about the human body, about discovering every little detail that I could, finding out what made everything tick and work in the ways that they did. In truth, that knowledge only makes a shinobi deadlier… nobody truly realises that Medical Ninjutsu is one of the deadliest fields when you put all the knowledge you gain about the human body into practice. Nobody thinks about the fact that simply overloading a technique like the Mystical Palm with chakra can put someone in a coma that only another Medical Specialist can reverse.” Kenshin would begin to explain to Raleth, but somewhere along the way he got himself lost in his own thoughts regarding how others acted in regards to Medical Ninjutsu, something that had always annoyed him quite a bit. Everyone was so quick to write Medical Specialists off as a non-threat… but, this was not the time for a rant like that. With a light chuckle The Raggedy Man would raise his right hand behind his head and rub his neck.
“My apologies, I ended up going on quite the tangent there… Medical Ninjutsu being overlooked in favour of Ninjutsu has always been a bit of a gripe of mine” He would say light heartedly, a small and slightly embarrassed smile upon his pale face.
“Now, your chakra scalpel was quite passable. It’s not the most advanced Medical Ninjutsu, nor is it particularly difficult to learn, but it is a solid start. And from what I was able to observe through your use of it you possess refined chakra control, which is the most important aspect for an up and coming Medical Ninjutsu user. I am glad you have come here, and if you still wish to learn more regarding the field of Medical Ninjutsu I would be more than happy to help you out. If you take to the training I offer, I may even allow you to become part of the Medical Corps, but before that you will need to show that you are indeed willing to work hard and improve in the field.” Kenshin would then say, his face becoming serious and his voice a touch cold as he clinically dissected what he had seen from Raleth. The cold tone would leave his voice as he expressed that he was glad Raleth came here, and a small smirk would form as he made his offer to train the older Sarutobi in the art of Medical Ninjutsu.
“So what say you Raleth? Do you believe you have what it takes to join the Medical Corps?” The Reaper would ask in an almost challenging manner, his eyes locked with Raleths own and a small, amused smirk splitting his pale lips.

Raleth shudders as the slender figure explains his interest in medical ninjutsu, and how his view clashes with most people's belief on it, the way his mouth articulated his words was almost natural. Something like passion takes over the ragdoll-like man, he loses himself in his own thoughts, and explains why he chose to focus on medical ninjutsu: his fascination with the inner workings of the human body. What look liked excitement shined behind his eyes when he spoke of the truth he found, and how he applied his findings to his work. And, what such an application has done to medicinal techniques, like the mystical palm. A dark thought blooms in Raleth's mind, the same thought that caused Raleth to shudder as the facimile of a man, Kenshin Uzumaki, explains himself.
Perhaps his interest was born from his own lack of...in-human characteristics?
The slender-figure notices Raleth's stare, believing it to be a look of genuine interest when it was unease. He puppets his hand behind his neck and stretches his mouth into a smirk, he feigns the look of embarrassment, apologizing for losing himself in his speech. He then analyzes Raleth's chakra scalpel, and commented on the Sarutobi's chakra control, stating it was refined. He then hinted at an offer to become a shinobi of the Medical Corps. The ash-haired shinobi had never thought of joining the medical core, his own interest in his martial art took over his life. The thought of being in an official corps gave rise to new feelings.
Perhaps that is how I can be an asset to my village.
Suddenly, the pretense of emotion washed away from Kenshin Uzumaki's face, his expression become cold. His gaunt cheeks and hollow eyes gave him the appearance of Death, and as he spoke his words sounded colder than the bodies housed in the Morgue.
“So what say you Raleth? Do you believe you have what it takes to join the Medical Corps?”
The presence of the man before him was intense, from just his words Raleth could feel the power that Kenshin possessed. In his house of Death, the Reaper had challenged the ash-haired Sarutobi.
"I believe I do, Lord Uzumaki," says the immense Raleth, "I could be a worthy asset to your Medical Corps."

Kenshin would give a light hum as the man proclaimed himself capable of being an asset to the Medical Corps… he would be the judge of that one.
“Then allow me to propose a little test for you, and if you pass I will allow you to join the Medical Corps freely.” The Reaper would say, his amused smirk growing by the smallest of fractions as he spoke. The man would, ever so slowly, go through the handseals required to perform the Mystical Palm technique… the very first Medical Ninjutsu technique that he ever truly mastered, and the basis of most of his personal Medical Techniques. Once the seals were performed The Ragdolls palms would light up, a soft and thrumming mass of cyan chakra coating them and expanding slightly out.
“This is the Mystical Palm technique, one of the most widely known and used Medical Ninjutsu known in this era. It alone is capable of healing a majority of the ailments and injuries you will come across in this hospital, so if you can demonstrate the ability to learn this technique I will allow you to join the Medical Corps.” Kenshin would explain, before finally finishing off by telling Raleth what his test was. Now, he wasn’t expecting Raleth to repeat what he did and learn how to successfully perform the technique on his first true attempt… he would give the older dog ample time to learn this new trick
“I won’t ask you to perform the technique for me right now, I will give you the time you need to learn it. You have one week to learn how to successfully perform this technique, and if you can’t then you needn’t bother returning to me, I will take your absence as enough of an answer. Now, I hope to see you within the week Raleth, but if I don’t… just know that I have lost no respect for you. Medical Ninjutsu is a notoriously difficult field of study and most are unable to attain the level of chakra control necessary to successfully perform the Chakra Scalpel, let alone the Mystical Palm.” The First Kazekage would explain with a softer smile to Raleth… and he meant it. There were simply fields that some were not suited towards studying, and he had the distinct feeling that he would not be seeing Raleth within the week… the man was dedicated, and the man was talented… but from what Kenshin had seen he did not possess the correct mindset for a Medical Ninjutsu Specialist.
“Good luck.” The Ragdoll would then say, giving the man a light bow as a gesture of dismissal, before turning back towards his desk to continue taking his notes.
