Repair the bridge! Empty Repair the bridge!

Repair the bridge!:

It was another standard day in Island Country, the sun was shining the weather was sweet and there was a nice bustle about the village. Kato stared out of the window of his apartment, admiring the view as he did most mornings. He followed his usual morning routine of morning stretches, a nutritious breakfast and a short meditation. Kato had signed up for the 'carrier pigeon mission scroll delivery service' and he was usually visited at some point during his morning routine with the mission scroll containing the information he would need for his days work. To his surprise no pigeon arrived to interrupt him with a mission scroll "strange. The carrier pigeons have been pretty reliable up to now. I wonder if there is a shortage of missions today?". Still wanting to work a mission today Kato decided to take himself off to the mission board, he had not visited there in some time but there was bound to be some mission there that he could complete.

After a short jaunt Kato made it to the mission board, it was pretty bare, only one mission remained. This explained the lack of carrier pigeon delivery. Kato plucked the mission scroll from the board, unrolled it and began to read. It was a D-Rank repair mission, not too bad, he liked working with his hands and he felt confident that he could complete the task. It seemed that requests would come in for shinobi to carry out all manner or repairing/maintenance jobs across the village. It made sense, the village was based on a collection of islands and the ocean had a habit of wearing down a lot of things. This request was to repair one of the bridges connecting two of the islands of the Mist village, an important job even if it was not the most glamorous, many members of the village relied on the bridges between the islands to complete their daily tasks so it was vital that they remained in good condition. In fact the bridge that needed repairing was a bridge that Kato used pretty frequently so he knew it well. On his way to the bridge he gathered the carpentry materials required for the repair job from a local wholesaler on the way. Trade was pretty good within the Mist village which meant it was rare that you would have to search the whole village for a specific item, you usually found what you were looking for after a short search, nothing too extensive.

By the time Kato had collected the required materials it was already midday and the sun shone high in the sky. The bridge Kato had been tasked to repair wasn't the largest but it wasn't just a short rope bridge either. The bridge was made of thick wood and was wide enough for three people to comfortably walk across it side by side. There were several wooden support beams that protruded from the rocky cliffs that the wooden bridge connected, they jutted diagonally out of the stone and connected to the underside of the wooden walkway. The bridge was built to be sturdy but over time some of the support beams had become degraded and worn through the effects of wind and sea spray. There were also several areas of the wooden walkway where planks were either missing, broken, or sticking up potentially causing problems for anyone who wasn't looking where they were going as they crossed the bridge. "Looks like there is plenty of repairs to keep me busy today" Kato thought to himself as he scanned the bridge with his Byakugan, checking for areas that required his attention.

Kato thought it was best to start by repairing the support beams, he didn't want the bridge to collapse halfway through the repairs after all. Repairing the beams was going to be the harder task as well so it was best to tackle this challenge while he had all of his physical and mental energy available to him. It was jobs like this that made him glad that he had learning the tree climbing jutsu in the academy, the repair task would off been almost impossible without it. Hanging upside down with his feet firmly attached to the underside of the bridge Kato began to work on repairing the degraded and worn support pillars. He moved with speed and elegance as he reinforced the damaged parts of the beams, placing strong wood over the weakened areas and holding them in place with a multitude of nails, swiftly and efficiently hammered. Kato worked quickly, reinforcing every weak point that his Byakugan could detect on the support beams. "This probably looks like quite the strange sight. Like a peculiar red haired bat weaving between the support beams" Kato thought to himself with a bit of a chuckle.

It had taken an hour or two to fully repair the support beams and the sun had carried on past the mid point of its cycle and began to dip down towards the horizon, there was still plenty of daylight left however. After giving the support beams one last scan with his Byakugan Kato felt confident he had reinforced all the points of weakness. Now was for the easier job, fixing and replacing the damaged/missing planks on the wooden walkway. This job was easier because it didn't require any jutsu to complete but after scanning the walkway with his Byakugan Kato realised there were quite a lot of the planks that required his attention. Without hesitation he set off repairing the planks, first addressing all the planks that had become partially upturned or that stuck up at funny angles. With the carpentry tools he brought with him Kato hammered and nailed the errant planks until all he could see was a flat surface. Next he addressed the planks that were missing, a relatively easy job, the only difficulties he faced in this task was having to resize some of the planks so that they could smoothly fit in the empty spaces on the bridge. Kato worked diligently, filling all the gaps in the bridge's walkway. This task took him around an hour or so leaving him with one task left for the day, replacing the broken planks. Luckily for Kato there were only a handful of these and the process of removing them and filling the hole that they left with a fresh plank did not take too long. He was finished with his work just as the sun was beginning to touch the horizon, it was quite enjoyable, even if it was labouring. As he was finished with the repair task Kato collected the remaining repair materials and made his way back to mission HQ to submit his completed mission scroll. On the walk back towards mission HQ he stopped off at the wholesaler where he purchased the materials and sold the remaining resources back to the shop vender before carrying on to submit his mission scroll. As he walked he felt a strong feeling of achievement, it felt good to do a days work, especially when it was work that helped the village. Menial tasks were not so menial when you looked at their wider impact after all.
