Fishing for Success [Kikuko]
Mon Jul 26, 2021 3:19 pm
It's a pleasant afternoon in Kirigakure. The rain from the previous day had cleared, the sun was bright enough without being overwhelming, and the gentle breeze made waves on a small pool of water surrounded by trees. Makoto had often thought this specific place was probably used at least once by a teacher to help students with the Surface Walking technique, since it was out of the way enough to avoid embarrasment from falling in, but deep enough that it was still a possibility. That kind of training was partially why she was there, after all- Not so much for the basics of the technique as for training her Chakra control.
Sitting cross-legged on the water and trying to keep an even spread of chakra across her lower body, Makoto is trying to read a book without losing focus on the technique. Naturally, this is rather difficult, even for someone with aptitudes for medical ninjutsu, so she's chosen a not particularly deep part of the pond to sit upon, lest the book be assuredly ruined if she makes a mistake. Becoming too engrossed in the book before had already had...consequences, so this was her third attempt. It was a careful balancing act, pun not intended. Poetry was interesting, at least.
Her god remained quiet thorough, not disturbing her concentration but giving slight corrections to the flow of her chakra that she picked up on. She'd probably have to stop once she got tired, but she felt pretty well rested still at the moment.

Re: Fishing for Success [Kikuko]

The water was cool, refreshing, welcoming. Kikuko had always loved swimming since she was a young girl- the feeling of weightlessness as she floated across the surface of the water had given her a sense of freedom that was almost impossible to fully grasp when upon dry land. Whether skimming across the surface or diving before into the world never quite seen by humanity, it didn’t matter to her- so long as the unmistakable smell reached her nostrils and filled her lungs with the moist tang that spoke of a whole other world just barely reaching into her own. A whole different perspective, piscine lives living alongside their own just below the surface. But for the limitations of her own lungs, she would gladly spend days simply exploring the depths.
But now, thanks to her intense study and love for her own crafts, she could- albeit not for an infinite amount of time. Technically, she still was holding her own breath, she noted- as the seal placed upon her throat in fact blocked all potential contaminants from reaching her lungs. No, in a certain way the fuinjutsu seal temporarily replaced her lungs- drawing in oxygen through the matrix before sending through the body, providing enough so that it was safe to remain active even with the surface far above her head. This, combined with a pair of goggles, allowed her to see through the murky water and seek out that which she was here for in the first place. Lakebed clams, laying dormant upon the floor- only for each of them to be swept up into her little net, already fat with her daily ‘catches’. Certainly, in many fisherman’s eyes it would be considered as cheating. In fact, she was of the same mind- but ultimately, her hunger won out over her pride. Today she had volunteered to gather seafood for an evening cookout, and that meant that she would need to deliver. Legitimate methods or not, food was still food.
With her net full of clams, she would march towards the surface- adjusting her swimsuit just in case as she grew closer and closer to fresh air. How long had she been down there? It was difficult to measure time with the sun so out of reach. Maybe that’s why some fish were nocturnal? Makoto would feel a subtle ripple in the water below her, as though something was swimming nearby. A fish?
And then from the water, an impossible thing would occur. A young woman wading straight out from the waters, walking until she was about stomach height before pulling over her goggles, shaking out her long hair as she surveyed the area. She still had time, from the looks of the sun. Maybe she could swim a bit longer-
Oh. That was new. She was fairly certain that nobody else was here before. A kunoichi? She wasn’t a familiar face, however.
“Hello!” Kikuko would wave to Makoto with the hand not currently occupied with a bag full of clams, facing her fully as the water continued to drip off of her frame. “I didn’t see you around here earlier. Are you training?"

Makoto stares at her with wide, pitch-black, lifeless eyes. What? In the first place, that outfit-
-MORE IMPORTANTLY, in second place, did she just walk out of the water this casually? Was this some sort of water-breathing bloodline at play? She couldn't see any gills, and besides, for the body to be able to take that much oxygen from the water it'd likely require- No, she's overthinking things. She closes the book slowly, placing a hand on the water and standing up with some effort and a good amount of focus as she redistributes and controls the amount of chakra being condensed there. Tucking what was absolutely not a romance novel under her arm, Makoto takes another good look at the young woman before nodding slightly.
"Yes. I was hoping to continue working on my Chakra Control. I'm trying to further refine my skill with medical techniques, so this seemed like a way to train endurance and control in one." She smiles slightly, looking a little awkward. "Good, uhm, catch today, I hope? I certainly wasn't expecting a-" strange lake woman "-Well, anyone to be fishing here."

Shaking a few droplets of water out of her hair, Kikuko would continue to consider the woman before her. There was an odd lifelessness to her eyes, but beyond that there was a curious calmness about her. A sort of steadfast, resolute energy that exuded from beneath the skin to permeate the air about her. But from where did that self-confidence reside? Was it through training? Faith? Experience? Perhaps even trauma? She did not have the answer, and from that she grew curious. And as she knew from the past, curiosity was simply the beginning to an adventure far greater than she could even begin to imagine in the present.
Briefly, she would realize that she was in fact still not breathing- the sealing matrix at her throat still doing the heavy lifting for her even now that she was out of the water. Unfortunately, at this point it was a redundant function- it was shutting her from utilizing her lungs even though she was now safely in a location where she could do so without consequences. Raising a hand to her throat, she would gently pulse chakra through them before the seal would fade away, dissolving under her fingers. While she could have simply waited for the matrix to eventually dissipate, there was something unnerving about it when she was above water. Perhaps she would find a way to remedy it in the future. Was she copying down a part of the array incorrectly? Or was it an inherent design flaw in the seal itself? So many questions to answer, and so little time.
“Chakra control? Ah, I see. While I wouldn’t call surface walking a medical technique, I can see the merit in practicing the basics before moving on further. Need to crawl before you walk, right?.” Having listened to the dull eyed girl’s explanation, she would nod contently before placing her clams upon the shoreline. It wasn’t as though they’d be going anywhere, and they’d stay fresh for a while yet.
“Oh! It’s been a great catch, yes.” Bobbing her head enthusiastically, she would do a little spin on her heel before gesturing to her catch of the day. “Normally I’d be looking for these babies somewhere before the storm barrier, but I was looking for a specific type of clam today. Looking to use them in a soup later, actually. Are you a fan?”
There’s no way she’s lying. It’s quite possible she’s not even capable of it, with an expression that open and honest.

"Never actually had it." She steps out of the water as well, brushing a graying lock of hair behind her ear. "Oh, and... it's more like endurance training? Maintaining precise focus and control for long periods of time is exhausting, so I figured it'd help a lot if I practiced incrementally...uhm. Incrementally using bigger and smaller surface areas for this and for longer periods of time. Actually, it's similar to what some of the monks do back home. I remember one of the older ones simply using a finger..." It had been a very impressive display, truth be told. She'd tried to replicate it many times, always ending up drenched, but it'd been a good type of training to pick up.
"I'm Makoto." She experimentally offers a hand, as if unsure. The expression on Kikuko's face purs her more at ease, though. "Makoto Yoshida. It's nice to meet you, I only recently actually graduated due to some... health issues. So it's nice to be meeting all the other people my age."
"She does seem nice. A fuinjutsu user, too- It's not an easy discipline at all. Perhaps you could learn a few things from her."
[TWC 701]
Makoto vaguely remembers one of her predecessors had actually set up some of the bigger seals around the temple, and she'd always wondered how that sort of thing worked, so... Well, it did seem like a good idea. Divine inspiration, if you would

“Really? They sell it in the local markets, actually. You give it a try some time! It’s really delicious if you eat it with soy sauce.” She enthuses. Clams were always really delicious, and if their shells were particularly pretty could be threaded into some at home jewelry as well. Really, they were such multifaceted creatures. Still, her explanation to her exercises were rather eye opening. Rather that focusing upon control, it was endurance she was going for? She could see how such an exercise would have similar methods to that as control- although normally she would expect that stamina would be more active of an attribute to train. Perhaps there was a reasoning behind it she couldn’t understand? Still, it made her al the more curious.
“I’ve never seen anybody manage to float upon the water with one finger, but it sounds amazing from what you’re saying. Do you think you’ll be able to do it, some day?”
After she gave the answer, she would accept the proferred hand. “Kikuko, Kikuko Hayashi. Congratulations on graduating! Being a Genin is hard work, but really rewarding. Trust me on that, got it? You’re going to learn a lot.” Upon being asked about her fuinjutsu, however, she would pause. She was interested in her techniques? Perhaps this would be a similar experience to that first day she had met Daiko, long ago. Now, to see how this would go.
“That’s right!” She would not enthusiastically. “It’s an array meant to filter out oxygen from the surroundings so that the user can breathe even in harmful environments. As you saw, it lets me breathe underwater too. Are you an enthusiast, yourself?”

Clams...she'd definitely have to try them sometime. This was not foreshadowing of any sort. Don't look into it. She listens to the question, thinking back on the monk...
The image of an elderly man with muscles of steel holding himself up on a single finger wasn't too hard to remember. Over a pool of clean water, the old monk stood perfectly still, carefully balancing his body's center of mass so as to not tip in any direction, the tip of his finger shining with strongly concentrated chakra. Though she remembers that stoic image well, a few other memories of the other monks attempting similar feats and failing catastrophically creep onto her mind, causing the priestess to laugh, covering her mouth with a hand.
"Well, if I try it, it should probably be with clothes like yours... From what I've seen and experienced, it'd certainly lead to a lot less embarrasment."
Shaking Kikuko's hand, she just repeats. "Well, it's nice to meet you Kikuko. Honestly, I've already been working very hard and doing missions, I'm actually..." She lowers her voice, as if it was a bit of a sinful secret. "I'm actually rather proud of my progress so far."
She listens to the Fuinjutsu explanation, shaking her head after being asked if she was an enthusiast. "Oh, no, one of the previous heads of the clan set up a lot of seals at the temple, so I've always been curious about it, though."

“Hmm?” She would take a moment to process, before realizing. Did she mean her swimsuit? Certainly, it was good for basic training, but it was inevitable that if a shinobi was knocked into water they would be swimming in their combat gear- not a comfortable swimsuit. Still, for a beginner, she could see the merits in doing so. “Oh, totally! It’s best to have clothes meant for the water when training for long periods like this. I’ve found that finding a private spot to train as well works wonders. Lets you feel more confident about yourself, you know?”
As Makoto divulged her progress, Kikuko would nod along enthusiastically at the sound of her current companion’s accomplishments. “That’s good to hear! Progress in the ninja arts is anything but linear, but I know how good it feels to actually begin to make headway. There’s a lot more to go, though, so don’t start resting on your laurels yet.”
So one of her ancestors was a fuinjutsu specialist? That was interesting. While the art was never strictly hereditary, often being based more on an apprentice master system, she had figured that most practitioners would at least make an attempt to pass on a few techniques to the next generation. Oh well. “Really? I could do a demonstration here, if you’d like. It’s not too complicated, really.”

Unfortunately, sudden and incredible circumstances would conspire so that Kikuko would be unable to do that demonstration she had so wanted to show- a messenger hawk floating on the wind to deposit a letter into Kikuko’s outstretched hands. Detaching the message from the bird, she would read the message before color would drain from her face.
She had left the oven on.
Coughing awkwardly into her hand, Kikuko would suddenly and forcefully bow to Makoto- a nervous energy bouncing her on her heels as she prepared to vanish. “Well, Ms. Makoto, it looks like we’ll have to schedule that one for later. Something just happened at home and I’ve gotta take care of it. Just be sure to look me up some time, okay? It’ll be cool! Anyways yeah gotta go goodbye!”
And with that mad dash, Kikuko would run off into the distance, determined to stop the fire sure to burn down her parents house otherwise.
