Turning the rumor mill

Mission

Kain had been given another mission. This time he had that same guy Nasu he was pretty sure was his name. They had gotten word that rumors were running around the village that Kiri was going to be going to war soon. It was starting to freak people out, and they had to counter this rumor with an even bigger rumor or simply prove it wrong. Either way, it was not something that Kain had really felt was his strong suit. This time though Kain was supposed to meet Nasu in the shopping district since that is where everyone seems to gather and spread rumors. Kain walked into a bar and sit down by the window so he could watch and see when Nasu would arrive.

“I’ll take a glass of whiskey,” he told the waiter as they came up to see what he wanted. Kain was the one that looked a little out of place here this time. Most of the people walking around were dressed in fine clothes or were working. While he looked like he had just gotten out of his cardboard box and found some money to buy booze with. While that might be mostly correct as he had found the money for his glass on the way here laying in the street. He did not live in a cardboard box, it was quite a bit bigger and the holes made for good circulation to help keep the smell of whatever it was that had died somewhere nearby from getting too strong.

Once Kain saw Nasu walk by if Nasu had not noticed him first Kain would walk out of the bar with his glass in hand and cigarette in the other and yell for him. “Hay I’m over here” would be loud and would probably draw the attention of a lot of the people around.

Nasu was given another mission with the new shinobi he met Kain. This time the mission was a lot closer to where Nasu needed to be though. They are meeting in the shopping district which is right next to Nasu’s house. The mission they were given seemed to be pretty simple. All they had to do was spread a rumor around. Nasu already had a perfect way to spread a rumor though. Nasu went right to the shopping district this morning. He didn't eat breakfast or grab any Ninja tools because there shouldn't be much fighting going on. He also decided why not have breakfast out as they were going to be in the shopping district anyway. Nasu was glad he wasn't going to feel out of place again. The only stares he would get on this mission would be off people who know him.

When he got to the shopping district he went straight to the square. Kain and Nasu didn't have an exact place to meet up so in the middle of the area seemed to be the best place. After a couple minutes of just sitting and waiting he heard somebody yelling at him. It was Kain walking out of a bar. He still had a drink with him and a cigarette for after his drink. Nasu would say hello and start a bit of small talk before getting into the details of the mission. After a minute or two Nasu asked Kain what kind of rumor they were going to start. “All we have to do is calm them down so if we can get them to believe that it's just over exaggerated it should be fine. Or we could say something on the lines of ``they want us to be scared so it would be easier for us to be attacked.” Nasu listened to what Kain had to say as well and then Nasu decided on how to start this rumor. “Lets go to that diner over there and get some breakfast. I haven eaten yet and if we just have a loud conversation about our own rumor that should get some people to listen to us at least.”

Kain waited as Nasu walked over to the front of the bar and finished his glass. Leaning back into the bar to sit his now empty glass down after waving to the bartender who gave him a nod. Kain was fine with Nasu’s idea of starting another rumor that could be more believable to the general populace. “Sounds like a plan this is your side of town so I’ll follow your lead on this one,” Kain told him. If it was up to him they would simply hunt down you ever is starting the rumor and quiet them, but sadly that is not how things worked anymore.

Kain followed Nasu to the dinner and they sat quickly towards the middle of the place. It was a fairly upscale kind of place with white walls, round tables, and booths along the walls. Everyone in the dinner was mostly well dressed and Kain got a few looks as they walked in, but he simply ignored it has gotten used to it by now. He also didn’t like sitting in the middle of the room as he wasn’t able to see everyone around him and someone could come up from behind him. The only thing that made him feel slightly better about it was that the only thing that could really sneak upon him was a dead man. Since he would be able to hear their heartbeat before they got to him.

The waitress would walk up soon after they sat down and ask them if they knew what they wanted. Kain simply looked at her “I’ll take a coffee, black” and turn back to Nasu. He wasn’t going to let his new partner know that this was the first time he had ever entered a place to eat. Since he didn’t have a need for food, and really didn’t know the customs of how things went down, so he decided to just follow Nasu’s lead. Once the waitress was gone getting their stuff Kain would ask Nasu in a low voice “So what are we going to talk about?”

Nasu and Kain had sat down in one of his favorite diners. Nasu would go there pretty often as the food tasted really nice. Nasu waited for the waiter to come over and to take their order. Kain had only gotten a black coffee but Nasu told him to order some food. They were going to be there for a while. Nasu also told him he would pay as the owner gives him a discount. The owner is good friends with Nasu’s family. Nasu ordered some eggs, toast, and a hashbrown. And Nasu would make sure Kain ordered some sort of food. It would look more suspicious if Kain wasn't eating. After the waitress had left the table Nasu started the conversation. “Can you believe those stupid rumors about how bad the war is going to be. You may not have heard this yet but all shinobi are being told that it's just over exaggerated. They were also told people were coming into the village from other towns and that they're the ones who are starting the rumours. Can you believe people who aren't even included in this upcoming fude are telling us what is going to happen. If only people knew these were all just lies to make our village more nervous. I bet the other village is just trying to lower our morale because they know our shinobi are too strong for them to beat.” Nasu said all of this pretty loudly and watched as heads started turning towards him and Kain.

Due to Nasu’s insistence, Kain ordered a muffin as well. Mostly because it was the first thing he saw on the menu, and he had no idea what any of it was. Once the lady was gone Nasu went in on the rumor. Saying that it was simply over-exaggerated rumors from the other villages sending people in to stir up trouble. Kain gave a bit of a laugh “Naw I haven’t heard it. They’ve had me on the night shift for a few weeks now.” Kain said matching Nasu’s tone. “It’s kind of crazy though since we have Suna outnumbered and just one of our shinobi is equal to three Hoshi shinobi, and don’t even get me started on Kumo. I mean when was the last time those guys even left their village” Kain would add to Nasu spill.

About that time the lady would be returning with their order. Sitting down Kain’s coffee and muffin, and Nasu’s plates. Kain simply broke the muffin apart but never eat any of it, and then opened up his flask and poured some of its contents into the coffee. He would offer some to Nasu if he wanted to spice up his meal as well.

Nasu and Kains food had arrived and Nasu was very ready to dig in. He buttered his toast and threw some eggs on it. He did not hesitate to just down it all. And the hashbrown went down right after it. Nasu enjoyed his food and then noticed that Kain hadn't even touched his muffin. Instead Kain took out a flask and poured some of what was in it into his coffee. Kain offered some to Nasu but Nasu didn't take it. He knew he would end up drinking a bit later. They weren't going to be done after this meal and what's the best place to start a rumor other than a bar with a bunch of drunks who believe anything you say is true. After some time of eating and Kain just drinking, Nasu asked for the bill. Nasu paid for everything and then said to Kain that we were not done yet. Nasu had led Kain back to the square and told him phase 2 of the plan. “Okay next we're going to go over to the bar you were in earlier. We can get some drinks and just talk some more. Hopefully all the drunk guys in there will spread the information thinking it's funny.” So Nasu led Kain to the bar and they sat right in the center seat in the bar. Nasu had gotten some whisky and then started talking some more. This time he let Kain lead the conversation.

Nasu did not want any of Kain’s drink so he simply drank his spiked coffee while Nasu eats his food. Once they were both done Nasu paid for the bill and they walked out. Except he stopped Kain who was thinking the job was done and getting ready to head out, and told him that they still need to work it some more. With a sigh, Kain followed Nasu over to the bar. Sitting down in the middle of the bar Kain simply held up a hand with two fingers. The bartender slid down two glasses of whiskey. “I hope you like whiskey,” he told Nasu.

After taking a sip of his glass Kain noticed that Nasu was waiting on him to start the conversation. “Well shit,” he said under his breath. Before rising up out of his seat “what the hell you mean there are ass holes from other villages talking shit about us in our own village” his tone was belligerent and loud, and he immediately got the attention of half the bar. Who was mostly all full of Kiri pride, some even being former shinobi themselves.

One of the guys walked over to the two of them. “What you mean who is that Suna scum, or those pricey little Hoshi fuckers” he asked the two of them. Kain simply looked to Nasu to answer the man.

Nasu watched Kain get the attention of almost everyone in the bar. And a man even came up to us and asked about it. “Man you haven't heard people from other villages are coming over to ours. And while they are here they are telling people that we should be scared about this war. It's dropping the morale of a lot of people and is scaring them a lot. But it's all straight bullshit. These people are just scared because they know how strong our village shinobi are. They know that if they tried to fight us without any tactics beforehand they would lose by a mile.” Nasu watched as this man was comprehending everything. “There are a bunch of people in the square right now talking shit saying how we're gonna lose. Me and my friend were thinking about heading out there and teaching them a lesson and giving them a taste of our power before the war even starts.” Nasu watched as the man turned to everyone else in the bar. “ You guys hear this shit. Other villages are trying to make us sound bad. US. Can you believe that? We're probably the strongest village out there.” “yeah” the rest of the bar was screaming. “Let's go out there and teach those fuckers a lesson.” Nasu just watched as everyone got up to go and start a fight. “Hey you wanna go get in on some of this action Kain?”

Kain stood next to the big guy that had walked up to them. He listened to what Nasu had to say and as expected the entire place got all riled up and ready to beat the shit out of some people. Kain just sat back down at the bar and quietly finished his drink while the others all went out and started to hunt down people from other villages. He looked over at Nasu “I think our work is done now what about you” he would ask. It seemed as though Nasu was kind of wanting to go and get further involved as he asked Kain if he wanted to go and get in on some of the action. To which Kain simply looked at him “I don’t do so well when blood is involved” and turned his drink upside down on the bar showing the empty glass.

Kain then walked towards the back of the bar. “Unless you plan on joining them I’d go out this way” he would yell back to Nasu, as he opened the back door into the alleyway. If Nasu followed he would give him a wave by as he walked out back towards his home.

Kain seemed to have no interest in joining the fight. Nasu was a bit surprised by that. Kain seemed like the kind of person who would enjoy fighting so if he had the chance he would go for it. After Nasu watched as Kain walked away Nasu realized that they just set people up. As this was all just a rumor none of it was true on either side. So Kain and Nasu just sent a bunch of drunk people out who are going to beat the shit out of all the other citizens. After realizing this Nasu went right into action not to fight but to help the people who were about to get beat to death. Nasu didn't do too much to help but he did a little at least just to make sure they didn't die. He put on a mask and went out there. He used his many hidden shadow snake hand jutsu to summon 10 snakes from his arms. He had them all go to a separate person who was being beaten and he had the snakes paralyze each one of them. Nasu then had the snakes lift them up and Nasu took them to safety. Nasu didn't end there though. He had to take them onto a roof so nobody would bother to come and attack them. Sadly that also meant that Nasu had to wait until they all woke up to help them get down and head home safely. It was really late so Nasu went trite towards his house. He opened up the door, went right to his bed and fell asleep.
