Kouma The Broken [P]

Natsuki looked at her reflection on the window panes. The doctor's role suited her; it was most unfortunate that it came with so many responsibilities. Her ability to use Iryojutsu was mainly to harm or protect others instead of performing surgeries. Not that she didn’t know-how. The village required her services in the hospital and war clinics after Valen’s coup. And the far worse Hoshimura rebellion. The wars left countless injured in their wake. She had to amputate many limbs and sometimes wish she could have given the gift of mercy to them. 

But a doctor is sworn never to take a life, and he used mystical palm and chakra anesthetic and even listened to their finals thought. Sometimes the wounded and ready to depart would confuse her with a long-lost lover or sister that they had before they died right there in her arms. Natsuki pitied them at the end; others would have to. Had they seen them.

“Yamaguchi Kouma.”She sighed and drummed finely polished fingernails at the desk. Her lilac eyes examining the open folder in front of her. Ayato’s ward, a boy he had endorsed and gifted one of the ultra-rare expensive Senju wood to. People would have called the kage a fool for that. However, Natsuki knew her brother and how he always shared be that little or much.

The young man is a puppeteer, or at least was. It was doubtful he would be able to control puppets as well as he did before after his injury. In fact, it was difficult for he would control anything in the field of battle. Considering the poor couldn’t walk anymore.

Souji Hyuuga had seen to that. Their cousin from Suna. “A carbon copy of the Hogokage when he was younger.” Natsu had heard one of the men in court say once. Lord Crayford then explained that their difference was Souji fought from a distance with the assistance of clones while Ayato looked to close it with setups before landing a strong blow personally. 

“That part was true at least.” The silver Hyuuga thought. But she knew Souji and who his father was.  All smiles and easy mannerisms when the public watched. “He is nothing like Ayato. He is a bad apple that one.” The battle-hardened Souji could have won the fight, but the obliteration of Kouma. That was no accident. He knew exactly where to strike and how so just enough that it wouldn’t kill him but break his spine to disable him for life. And end his shinobi career.

“Poor Kouma, send in the Chuunin exams by one Hyuuga, only to be crippled by another.” Her brother believed in the little hero that would win against adversity no matter the odds against him. However, not everyone had it in him to climb that mountain. Hopefully, Ayato understood that now. His orders suggested as much. The Yamaguchi Scion was to be healed no matter the cost. And the Hogokage had sent his sister to tend to him. 

Natsuki waited for the boy to come in.

A deep breath went in and out of a young man’s mouth as he sat in a pure white waiting room in a hospital. This was Kouma, and he was definitely nervous right now, as he was about to embark on something that seemed really risky. He had been getting a bit worse for wear recently, as he had unlocked something deep within the memories of the Yamaguchi that made his start to get weaker. It was some sort of strange energy inside of his body that seemed to be the opposite of life, but also not quite death either. At least death was something that facilitated new life and growth, but this seemed to offer none of that, simply decay and oblivion. This energy was seeping through his body, which was already quite injured because of his recent back injury, and so he was having a hard time coping, and asked for some assistance in that. He did not mind being in a wheelchair, although apparently that was going to be taken care of as well with this operation, and so he was very excited and nervous at the prospect.

It had been a couple of months that he was in this wheelchair as he was waiting for some sort of donor for his condition, and soon after the accident in the chunin exams, although it was not much of an accident as Kouma making a big mistake in them and the opponent capitalizing on that, he was not quite as active so decided to temper his mind and delve deeper into the Yamaguchi’s secrets. He also knew that most of the Yamaguchi would not have an aversion to this energy, but he did for some reason, and the doctors knew how to fix it, or at least wanted to attempt an experimental surgery and seemed like it would be fixed. He had opted for his mother not to be there, although she wanted to be, he did not want to stress her out even more than she was with all of this going on, and she did not have the power to help even if something were to happen to him, so it was better if she just sat and relaxed at home, waiting for the news.

Kouma was soon told that he would be let into the room to speak with the medical ninja that would be performing his surgery, and wondered what they would do about said surgery. Because of the advances in medical ninjutsu, they did not really need to be in a highly sterile operating room anymore, but that was only for the skilled medical ninja, so the common doctors, if you could call them common, would still need all of the normal things such as implements, assistants, and a sterile operating room. Kouma was grabbed by a nurse and wheeled into the room, with the nurse bowing slightly to the woman in the room that was going to perform the surgery. Kouma immediately bowed to her and started with a greeting. “Hello doctor, I’m Yamaguchi Kouma, nice to meet you.” Kouma would say very politely, before going on with a thanks to her. “Thank you very much for agreeing to perform the surgery on me.” He said, wondering what the surgery was going to entail.

The door to the room opened, a boy in a wheelchair, dressed in the wide robes of the hospital. A skinny little thing he was, all bones and elbows. The Kunoichi thanked the nurse who wheeled him to the desk before dismissing her with a pleasantry.

Her lilac eyes turned to the patient two meters away from her. “Hello Kouma, I hope you are well. I’m Natsuki Hyuuga.” She said with a smile wide and bright.  “It seems you got hurt along the way. But nothing we can’t fix.” Natsuki finished and looked around. The room had a pleasant draw, with wall tapestries deciphering a forest with tall green sentinels. Unlike most operating rooms with white walls, this made both patient and doctor feel that they were in the ward of an insane asylum. 

“Your spine will have to be replaced entirely. Just replacing the vertebrae itself, as the initial evaluation showed, won’t do your Kage search far and wide for it and found the most compatible one for you. They say Kaguya bone is as hard as steel. We mean to find out.”

She looked further into the medical files going over point by point. “The examination on your body showed us something else. “ She placed the folder on her desk and looked the boy in the eye. “Kouma, your kidney is failing. Something awakened inside of you after the Chunin exams, and whatever it is, it is not good. If this continues, you might not be able to continue being a shinobi.”

The solution to counter this had come from an unexpected source, a man named Kharjo Yamaguchi. “There is a way to stop it.” The feminine-looking man had mused when summoned into this very same room a day ago.  His clan historically showed signs of vital organ failure from a destructive interaction with an advanced element in their bloodline. The name of which Natsuki did not know.

“I won’t lie to you that it is a gamble, a small one but a gamble nonetheless. If we perform surgery and replace your kidney with the kidney of a Jugo, the nature chakra within can balance out the negative effects and stop them from spreading to the rest of your body.”

Natsuki would rise from her seat, gently pat Kouma on the shoulder, and walk to the middle of the room. She performed the handseals for the summoning technique, and three items would appear with a puff of smoke. A clean medical bed, a disk containing sterilized tools, a tube filled with anesthetic gas, and Natsuki’s surgery kit. A line was attached to it that ended in a plastic mask. 

“Before we proceed with this, do you have any seconds thoughts or anything to ask? By all means, please let me know.”

The young man simply stayed still in his seat and listened to the woman’s diagnosis that the doctors, or maybe it was just her, came to once they had done all of the tests that were required towards him./ It turned out that there was something seriously wrong with his body, and it happened to be related to the Pact Eternal that he practiced. Regardless of what was wrong, it seemed like the doctors, or at least one of the other Yamaguchi that might have a bit more experience in this department had offered up a solution, and that was a series of two different transplants that would hopefully cure not only his spinal injury and make it stronger than before, but also give him the ability to counteract the symptoms of the strange negative energy that was welling up inside of his body recently. Still, he wondered if there were any side effects, and so would ask that question before agreeing.

“Are there any potential side effects? Or is this fairly unknown territory?” Kouma would politely ask, but unless there was a serious chance for him to die, he would most likely go through the surgery regardless. The doctor had already unsealed a bunch of hospital and surgery equipment, and Kouma made a nervous gulp, but he put on his determined face and would nod once he felt that he was ready for the surgery. He did not really have any other questions, he just wanted to make sure that what was done to him would not put his friends and family at risk or anything before he went through with it. Still, he was determined to fight through the pain or whatever bad side effects there were if it meant that he could continue getting stronger to be able to protect his mother.

The boy appeared unbending when he heard the new information that had surfaced. Something about that earned Natsuki’s respect. Was it the same fearlessness that led him to compete in the Chuunin Exams a step too soon?

And would the procedure today have similar results? No, she couldn’t think like that. She was Natsuki Hyuuga, the Kage’s younger sister. There was no procedure she couldn’t perform or after-effects she wouldn’t see coming from a mile away.

“Young Kouma, there is a risk. The Jugo Bloodline is not a gift from the gods. On the contrary, the bearer is cursed with random fits of rage after their body reaches a certain threshold of nature chakra.” She said. They all knew about the Jugo bloodline in Hoshi. Kyousuke Snow the third Kage was one, Hiroshi Griffin, the most notorious bandit of Haven and their prisoner another. The doctor Akabayashi Terumi had left no stone unturned when he did a medical evaluation on Genin Enishi Kurosawa, son of Suguru. 

“Once the surgery is successful, you are going to be assigned a handler that will watch over you. The handler will remain by your side until you learn to control the Natural Berserker bloodline.”

If the information did not bend the boy's seemingly iron will, Natsuki would walk back, lift Kouma with her arms and carry him to the bed where she’d ask him to get comfortable. Opening her surgery kit, she would prepare herself: a hairnet, a pair of clean gloves, and a blue robe. 

“I’m going to put you to sleep now so I can perform the surgery. When you are ready, I want you to count for me to one to ten in reverse."  If he did, Natsu would put the plastic mask on his face and release the anesthetic gas to keep Kouma unconscious during the surgery.

Kouma listened as the information came out of the doctor’s mouth, and none of it was particularly good news. It seemed like whatever they were going to use on him would come with a really bad side effect that he would have to figure out how to overcome if he was going to continue on his path and not become a mindless raging killing machine. This was something that he had to pause for, as he had to take a good long and questioning thought process to it. Should he go for this surgery when it could cost him and the people around them some precious time or even their lives? He was determined to control the urges if the surgery was to continue, but did that also mean that he would need to be separated from his mother for a period of time? This was something that he was going to have to work out in his own head for a bit before deciding, but the time was already here. He decided that he was going to go ahead and try for it anyways, as he had never backed down from a challenge, and this was simply another one in a different form.

He was thinking a lot of different thoughts in his head, but only a few seconds had passed in the real world when he was thinking about it, and so he resolutely nodded. “I believe I can overcome whatever hurdles that I’ll face.” Kouma would say, before the surgery would continue. The woman went and got a couple of things ready, such as the masks, gloves, and other peripherals that were needed for a surgery, and soon Kouma was lifted out of the bed. He was not really ready for this, and it embarrassed him a bit, as he could have gotten out of the wheelchair himself and made it over to the bed, but it seemed that the doctor had other plans. She then stated that she was going to administer general anesthesia to him so that the surgery could begin, and to count backwards from ten. He knew a bit about surgery so he knew the drill, and he believed that they were competent in their job and had no other reason to doubt them, so he did so, and soon fell fast asleep.

Natsuki activated her Byakugan when the anesthetic kicked in and put the boy to sleep. With Natsuki's eye power, there was no need for surgical light looming over doctor and patient.

The medical kunoichi would begin to operate on the boy, and because he was unconscious, no fear of reaction made the whole process that much faster. She had heard some performed the procedure with the patient still conscious and brute chakra anesthetic to numb the pain. "Animals." Natsuki thought under her surgical mask with a scoff, dropping Kouma's old kidney in a metal bucket. From a white cooler, she'd bring out the Jugo kidney and put it inside the boy before stitching him back up with a biodegradable thread.

Next, she would move the unconscious kid slightly to the side and repeat the process, this time on his spine. She dropped the old cracked appendix in a different bucket, where it landed with a loud clanking noise, some of the blood spilling on the white marble floor. She breathed a sigh of relief after she drilled the new one in place. "Reinforced Kaguya bone. It would take quite the effort to break that one too." 

As she stitched back the flesh on Kouma's back, Natsuki hoped that the new organs would accept him as quickly as the original ones did. Cleaning up, she would call for the Nurses on the intercom to come and move Kouma to a different Hospital room, where he would spend the following days recovering and rehabilitating. A letter would be on his hospital bed, once opened by the boy or his mother should she come and visit.

Anesthesia was a very strange thing to be under, especially if you had never been anesthetized before. As an example, when one went to sleep, after they woke up they would have a vague sense that time had passed. Anesthesia is a massive difference from this, as once you get put to sleep with the drugs, there was no sense that time had passed at all. You simply closed your eyes and then immediately woke up, sometimes feeling a bit woozy from the drugs, and sometimes you felt fine. Sometimes you would wake up and start being goofy or saying things that you would not say when you were actually awake, but the person that was under the effect of the drug would not remember any of that. This was essentially what happened to Kouma, as he was suddenly awake in a hospital room that he did not go down in, which confused him for a moment. He was attached to an IV and was simply looking around confused.

There was no one else in the room, and so Kouma decided to use a bit of his chakra to scan through his body to see if he could feel any difference between his previous organs and his new ones. It was a strange feeling, he could feel that something was different, but he could not tell what was actually different with his new body. He could feel something different and he would definitely have to focus a lot harder to feel what his new body was capable of. He was feeling slightly woozy right now, and so he could not figure out anything and would have to wait. Kouma simply called a nurse with a little button that was on the side of the door, and a woman that was a part of the staff came in and brought in a big glass of water and some crackers. A simple bit of meal that would help him settle his stomach a bit. Kouma thanked her and asked her to call his mother and inform her that he was okay after the surgery, at least for now.
