Boxing Day

The man walked into the training area of the water gardens. It was Mond; the sun was already beginning to set this time of the year. The samurai always enjoyed more the darkness of the night. The sun always made him sweat bullets. That was beneficial for the workout, but his hate for the ball in the sky outshined his love for gymnastics.

Today he wore a black sleeveless shihakusho, and over it a white haori, his sword tied by a rope belt. A rope had many uses, such as a tie, a boat, or blade, to drag a tire; everything was fair.

“Alright, let’s get this started.” He walked towards his private training station. He started by doing some warm-up. Nothing too spectacular, stretches and some shadow boxing. “Your fists are whips, not hammers.” He remembered the voice of his old teacher Tatsuya Shimakawa.

Yohei always had an instinct to break someone’s face, so he started swinging like a madman. That resulted in many times gassing out and being put on the back foot by an opponent.

“Keep using your jab.” And he did. Picture perfect. Extension and retraction, Yohei’s left arm took flight many a time. Satisfied, it was time to move on to the next practice.

Refining his jab for today was crucial to getting into a battle rhythm. Yohei knew that measure the distance in close quarters then slept them with a heavy strike. However, the next part would be a little bit more crucial.

Stamina. The gas tank was essential—especially when meeting someone at even odds. When two equal opponents met, the difference in at least skill would begin to show when one of the two energy began to deplete. You could hide many things during combat, including pain but never tiredness. That was the worse fear of every fighter, getting tired and losing the ability to fight back. 

Yohei wouldn’t be one. At least his old self. It sucked to admit, but his lack of training for the past year and change made his cardio far from impressive. Thankfully that meant he knew the area he needed to invest most in.

So he used the secret spice, the ultimate secret for perfect stamina. And the name of that, running. With every step, his shoes kicked up dust, leaving a small cloud to trail behind him. Yohei never claimed to be the most graceful of fighters, much less the most elegant runners. Yohei started slowly and then picked up the pace. Thankfully, the area he was training wasn’t huge, 500 meters, so he quickly pulled the first lap. There were nine more to go.
