Calm winds over distant horizons (auron)
Sun Jan 09, 2022 3:51 pm
Matilda slept without a care in the world, but Balthazar remained awake, burdened with thoughts of a world that was no longer there.
The lack of a right eye eliminated a good forty percent of his vision- throughout his watch, he had to compensate by swiveling his head considerably. It was uncomfortable and wrong.
He couldn’t name a single plant or bug or critter, nor could he express such to his companions. On some level, he knew that he was only still with them because he had yet to prove himself a liability, but some hidden part of himself imagined his brothers’ faces superimposed over their own.
He wasn’t sure if that made it hurt more or less.
Unconsciously, he lifted a hand to his throat. Over the weeks, speaking had largely stopped hurting, and now the main barrier of communication was language itself. Balthazar shuddered as he passed over a raised white blister where his shoulder met the slope of his neck.
Whether due to stubbornness or fear, he’d largely avoided looking at his reflection. He wasn’t entirely sure what he looked like following his fall. Vanity was one of his biggest flaws, as regaled to him over and over again by Heylel.
Not that he was much to look at anymore.
He delicately poked the campfire with a water-soaked stick, setting down a log gently that would’ve otherwise fallen noisily to the packed earth below.
He’d be well within his rights to hate his family, but he knew he’d come running back with open arms if they asked, no matter how much they’d hurt him in turn. Movement caught the corner of his remaining eye, and his head tilted sharply to the left.
Grateful for the interruption of his innermost thoughts, he nodded at the stranger, not knowing how to greet others beyond words that made no sense. His watch was far from over, but perhaps a fireside conversation wouldn’t be amiss.

As the night waged on, so did the thoughts of the cursed Yamaguchi. Homeless, as most missing ninja were, Auron had taken refuge in the decrepit remains of a weathered and eroded rock shelter. Still though it was sturdy enough to make for a decent home for the time being. And it was relatively spacious. The man hadn't been cramped and confined like some of the other places he had hung his hat in the past. At least here he could sprawl out a bit. Still though it was exposed to the elements and overall uncomfortable. Even the crackle of the embering fire he had built wasn't enough to cozy him up. And to top it all off, Auron's non stop mind seemed to inflict him with a case of moderate anxiety for the night.
Restless, he'd crawl out from his rock shelter and the cold wisp of wind would immediately assault him. He'd shudder slightly, before retrieving his hat from the branch of an adjacent, small tree. Positioning it on his head and gathering his belongings, Auron would set out from his temporary camp with the intentions of heading to Matilda's small estate. Perhaps she would be kind enough to let the man sleep on the floor of her house.
As he made his way back towards the rendezvous point where he had formed a three man team with two strangers, his subconscious was somewhat corrupted. Flashbacks, no...visions had engulfed his mind; akin to the ones he had witnessed just before committing the atrocity of a crime that had shunned him from his life in Konoha. Corpses, necromancy, death. He squeezed his eyes shut tightly in anguish in an attempt to dismiss the visions, and for the time being it worked. Yet as he reopened his eyes and his view met the cobblestone path he walked up, his vision was influenced again by the spirits of his ancestors. This time however, they weren't so darkly governed. Instead, it was almost like taking a brief glimpse at an alternate timeline. He's gain a short window of insight to see his brother. It was a rear view, so unfortunately he couldn't discern any distinguishable features of the man. But this silhouette had appeared so often in these visions and dreams that Auron could immediately deduce it to be his sibling. In awe, he'd stop momentarily in his tracks before his strained eyes would blink to relieve themselves. And when they would, the vision would dissipate. It was a shame. There were no indications of where his brother was, or even what he was doing. Nevertheless, it was a reminder of one of the reasons why he had set out from Konogakure.
When Auron would finally come to and step back into reality, he could see the cobblestone pathway ascending up the mound that led to Matilda's house. He'd continue up it, and right at its peak his eyes would fall on the lightly illuminated figure sitting by a campfire near Matilda's house. Squinting, Auron could make out the person nodding their head at him. A quick string of thoughts led the Yamaguchi to believe this was likely Luujin or Balthazar, the only other people he had known of that might be camped outside of Matilda's place. And walking a few steps closer towards the campfire would confirm the suspicion.
"Balthazar?" he'd call out as he now was within 5 meters of the familiar stranger. Remembering the difficulties in communication the two had due to the language barrier, Auron attempted to overly simplify his part of the conversation. "You sleep here?"

Realizing that Balthazar had been occupied, Auron would turn from the camp and set off down the road.
