Sake Saturnalia Rice-Eating Contest [Open]
Wed Jan 19, 2022 4:58 pm
The stage was set. A crowd had gathered around an open area just outside of the residential area. The area had been prepared to avoid hurting any crops or stopping any of the other activities going on for the festival. Everyone was murmuring, waiting for the announcement to be made.
The stage was only a few feet tall - tall enough for the crowd to see the action, but nothing extraordinary. On this stage was a long wooden table with a beautiful white and rose cloth draped over it. Behind the table stood five chairs, in front of each were five bowls, filled to the brim with the signature dish of the town; a lovingly cooked (if a bit cold by now) rice, flavored with some simple vegetables like carrots and edamame. A giant board loomed over this stage, clarifying to the legally blind what event was about to take place here.
RICE EATING CONTEST
Yamato walked up the stairs on the side of the stage. Some people started clapping, some unsure if this meant it was time yet or not. At this point Yamato had gotten drunk and back sober a few times, so keeping the mask on his face was beyond an aesthetic choice for him. He tried his best to walk slowly and carefully, to hide any amount of alcohol that was still within his system. He walked up to the front of the stage. At this point he had garnered the attention of the full crowd in front of him.
He spoke, "Kind locals and visitors of Tanbogakure. It is my joy and honor to welcome you to the ONE-HUNDREDTH SAKE SATURNALIA!". The crowd cheered. "In a moment, five of our own will join me on this stage and BATTLE!". The crowd was silent. Yamato had forgotten his train of thought. He should not have been doing this drunk. "IN… THE GREATEST STAGE OF ALL! THE SYMBOL OF OUR TOWN! OUR ESTEEMED CROP!". Some of the crowd started buying it but not all, he seemed beyond saving. "WELCOME TO...", people engaged once again, perhaps because he seemed to be wrapping up, "THE ONE-HUNDREDTH SAKE SATURNALIA RICE-EATING CONTEST!". A loud cheer, once again. Saved. The contestants seemed to be in line. Yamato gestured them to join him on the stage.
The battle was on.

- Hikari's Kimono:
- Hikari's Mask:
- Kuro’s Mask:
Hikari listened to her friend’s booming voice as he announced the competition, the crowd going wild as they cheered and clapped. A rice eating contest…how am I going to win this?! Her lilac eyes, hidden behind the pink and white kitsune mask, nervously glanced around, shifting between the stage and her wolven companion, Kuro. Being probably the shortest contender for the race put her at a disadvantage, there was no way her stomach would be big enough to eat the most bowls of rice, but five bowls seemed doable if she could move her hands quicker than everyone else. Sure five bowls was still a ton of rice, but when she thought about how delicious the rice in Tanbo was it didn’t seem like a daunting task to accidentally eat so much rice.
Kuro nuzzled her shoulder to try and calm her nerves, the mask atop his muzzle hitting against the blue sleeves of her kimono every now and again. She smiled softly at his efforts, her quickened heart rate slowly calming down a little as she remembered why she had accepted Yamato’s request to partake in the contest to begin with- for fun and to try to beat the odds. After all, how funny would it be for such a petite woman to beat out the other competitors in an eating contest? The crowd would be in an uproar! That alone made the consequences worth it, and the ryo prize money was the cherry on top.
That was why she had found herself in line with the other competitors, their faces a blur as she focused on trying to remain as calm as possible. She had never had to eat in front of a crowd before, her cheeks a warm rosy hue as she walked out onto the stage. Thank the heavens for this mask…at least they can’t see how embarrassed I am. Hikari had never been so happy for a festival to have a mask tradition as she did at this very moment. The beautiful carving helped give her a boost of confidence, as although they would know who she was due to her wolf familiar, at this moment most of the crowd had yet to know her. She was a random competitor in an eating contest, only a select few knew her as Hikari. The crowd would probably be too dazzled with her mask or Kuro to pay her any attention.
Hikari tied her hair out of her face and set the wolf friendly rice down on the ground for Kuro to participate in, as they had made a few accommodations for him once they learned of his participation. Of course the likelihood of a wolf beating everyone seemed even more far fetched than she, so it was mostly just for fun that he joined- although if he did somehow eat more than everyone else the snowy haired kunoichi wondered what exactly they would do. Would they give him the prize money or give him a participation reward and give the actual first place reward to the person who won after him?
She was drawn out of her thoughts by Yamato’s familiar voice telling them to get ready, her eyes glued to the bowl of rice that sat innocently before her. By the end of the day would she grow to hate rice? Was her last thought before the announcer told them to start, her mind going blank on the world around her. It was just the rice and her now. Kuro would of course also begin chowing down on the rice from his perch on the floor once Yamato told them to start, since it would be silly to put a massive wolf in a chair. He would’ve probably broken it by accident if they had tried.
(Hikari’s Vigor is 50 and Speed is 61)
(Kuro’s Vigor is 12 and Speed is 12)
(First 2 rolls are for Hikari, the next 2 rolls are for Kuro)

Taiko drums beat in a rhythmic fashion as a shamisen began to strum frantically, chaotically the two noises mixed until a tribal and war-like sound emitted from the complimentary musical instruments. Walking towards the stage, a giant. Not due to his height, for he had only stood at six feet and three inches tall. But a giant due to the sheer girth of his figure. A mountain of muscle that seemed to grow sentience and moved with a stride of confidence that bordered on arrogance. With one hand hanging in the center of his yukata, and his right hand on his hip. He made his way over towards the table. Looking with arrogance at the crowd that had gathered to see him compete. Receiving his boos, although they were playful in nature.
One of the men whom had been playing the drums for his entrance laughed as they finished the small, intimidating, jingle. Looking at his fellow performers as they started to pack away their instruments. "Okay that is good enough guys, pack it up! We got other places to be. Good luck, Hanzo!" He'd wave and smile, before moving back to the residential district with his band. Hanzo had paid them so that he could, of course, entertain the children. Specifically the same class of children that he had grown a bond with ever since teaching them some weeks ago. He told them that the was going to be a villain at the Rice Eating Contest and he wasn't the kind of man to disappoint the kids.
As others began to make their way to the stage, Hanzo got himself behind his station, waving to certain people in the crowd that he knew well and some in which he didn't. But that percentage was rather small, since it was well known that Hanzo was the kind of man who would help out a citizen of Tanbo, especially if it was beyond their means. Hanzo gazed over at the judges, giving them a grin that was both unnerving and mischievous. He had something planned, but he hadn't unleashed it yet. No, he'd wait as time passed and Yamato began to speak, announcing the contest. He made note of many of the participants here, though didn't really see them as being a threat to him. At least he didn't see them as threats when he checked the entry roster.
Hanzo began to undo his chocolate brown yukata. So that his entire front of his body was exposed to the crowd. Eliciting some noise from some of the less modest members of the crowd. Though he still did nothing. Said nothing. Focused only on putting on a show for the people that he came to know and love. Hanzo would take the bowls from the empty spot on his left, adding them to his pile. As Yamato called out for the participants to begin their feast, Hanzo stood up, using his left hand to raise up his own bowl of rice to his mouth, while the right hand took the bowl in front of him and pressed it against his abdomen. This would be a test of endurance and skill. Few were willing to put their whole body on the line.
First roll is for Hanzo, Second roll is for Hanzo's Abs (which are, ofc, same stats).

Hayato wasn't someone who wished to stand out. The idea of getting on a stage before a bunch of people worried him, but he knew if he won some of the prize money he'd easily be able to afford a nice house for his mother inside the village's walls. As Tanbo was growing bigger and bigger he knew he wanted to buy an estate sooner rather than later. Not only did he have a need for the money he also had a profound love of rice unmatched by any. He knew he had the right combination of skills to do well. So despite his trepidation, he wandered up to the stage. The crowd was larger than he expected for such an event. The many masked and unmasked faces watched his red oni mask as walked across the stage. The stares were eating though his protection. He blushed and started to sweat. He was close to tuning himself around, but he wanted to do this. His family was important to him. He had to do this.
It was helpful that Yamato was the announcer. Another familiar set of masks he noticed was the small frame of Hikari and her adorable wolf friend Kuro. He wondered if dogs could eat rice, but quickly set the thought aside. He knew Hikari wouldn't let Kuro eat something bad for him. She seemed like a kind person and very caring from the little he had interacted with her. The even more built frame of Hanzo was a bit menacing if you didn't notice the smiling and waving he sent out into the crowd. He must be popular Hayato thought as he heard the cheering from the crowd. He attempted to ignore the crowd, and scurried to his place, sitting close to the two he knew. He waved to them before he looked to the delicious looking bowl in front of him. He could smell the flavors embedded into Tanbo's cash crop. The scent of vegetables and edamame made his mouth water. For a moment, the crowd disappeared. His friends disappeared. It was just him and plenty of scrumptious rice. He lifted his mask up slightly reveling his visible Salivation. He took out a pair of chopsticks from under his Kimono and grabbed a bowl. He took another deep whiff of the dish before him. Hayato couldn't take it more he focuses intently on the moment Yamato let him eat. The very moment he was allowed he devoured all the rice he could get his hands on as quickly as he possibly could. Nothing else except him and the rice existed. The boy was hungry for victory, but would it be enough?

The crowd was on the edge of their seat.
The challengers were all set. There were murmurs spreading through the crowd. A wolf? A wolf was competing in the rice challenge? It was unheard of. What was this madness? The complaints and the confusion reached the ears of Yamato, who was in charge of making sure everything was running smoothly. He walked up to the microphone as the contestants started eating bowl after bowl of the world’s best rice. "As our contestants focus on the competition, I hear you, I will look into the rules." Yamato addressed the crowd.
All of the participants seemed to be taking this competition equally seriously. There were ten total contestants. Nine humans, one wolf. The ones in the lead, however, seemed to be three faces Yamato was familiar with. Hanzo, Hikari and… Hayato? Wow, the kid seemed to have a bottomless stomach. He was going faster and eating more rice than Yamato thought someone of his size would be able to.
While the Yamanaka wanted to focus on the competition, he had a duty of his own. He ran backstage to grab the sacred tome that had been passed down for generations. This tome held the rules to this most prestigious of events. Yamato walked back to the stage, running through the pages to scan through the rules. Once he raised his head to check the ongoing competition again, he was greeted with the sight. Hanzo seemed to be shoving half of the rice bowls directly towards his stomach. He went back to the first page of the book, and started scanning again.
He thought the competition would be light on stretching the rules. How naive he was. His eyes were constantly shifting between the book and the contestants. Luckily, there were referees on the side of the platform to make sure nobody was cheating out of Yamato’s eyesight. All of a sudden, a high-pitched whistle grabbed the attention of the entire crowd.
A TECHNICAL FOUL
Someone had been eliminated. Tako, the owner of a small restaurant was caught by one of the side referees. He had been ‘dropping’ some of the rice from the bowl directly into the pockets inside his jacket to decrease his workload. This left nine competitors still shoving rice into their mouth. Eight humans, one wolf. At roughly the same time, the competitors seemed to be slowing down. Kuro was on his fourth bowl, which would have put him in the lower rankings, and he was still going.
Every contestant had been timed separately, most of them already done with their run. Hayato, Kato and Hanzo were all done with their bowls. It was up to the referees now. As Kuro was finishing his last bowl, it was time to announce the winners. But first, Yamato had to clarify the rulings. "I have an announcement to make." he spoke, taking the microphone once again. "There is no rule that states a wolf can’t compete. Kuro will remain!". Cheers and applause gave Yamato a break from his words. There seemed to a small minority who disagreed with this decision, but most seemed to be happy with the call. Once the cheers died down a little bit, Yamato spoke again. "However," he said, "The judges decided that the bowls Hanzo put on his abdomen will NOT count towards his total.". There were some minor boo’s aimed at Yamato after these words, and even those not shouting did not seem too happy with this call. "We will now move on to the announcement of the winners and their rewards!". The crowd was suddenly back on board, waiting for the call on the edge of their seat.
Yamato called all the participants to the front of the stage. There was a small platform for the top three performers to stand on when they were announced, the platform for the better standings higher than the worse ones. "The special prize for most bowls eaten goes to...". Yamato waited for a short time before the reveal. "HAYATO! With THIRTEEN BOWLS!". The crowd cheered and applauded. "And now onto the winners of the traditional Sake Saturnalia Rice-Eating Contest!". The crowd stood up from their seats for the announcement. This was always an important moment for the village.
Yamato spoke. "In the third place. With SEVEN BOWLS eaten. The FIVE BOWLS eaten in SEVEN POINT NINE SECONDS… HIKARI!". The crowd cheered. Yamato gestured her to take her place at the lowest platform for the top three. Once she took her spot, a young woman dressed in a white kimono approached her and handed her a bouquet of flowers, and an envelope that contained her reward and a certificate for her win in this event. After Hikari took them from the woman’s hands, a much older lady approached her to put a bronze medal around her neck. The crowd cheered once again. "Special thanks to Mrs. Aiko Sato, the winner of the 50th Sake Saturnalia Rice-Eating Contest and the owner of Sato Restaurant, for presenting our performers with their medals today!". The crowd cheered for Aiko Sato.
Yamato gave the crowd some time to settle. There were some big fans of Aiko Sato, who didn’t stop chanting her name until it was time to announce the top two. "In the second place." Yamato said, and the crowd became silent again with anticipation, "With TEN BOWLS eaten. The FIVE BOWLS eaten in SEVENTY TWO SECONDS… HANZO!". The crowd cheered once again. This time the cheers seemed to be more female-heavy. One young person shouted "MARRY ME HANZO!" which got a couple of chuckles from the crowd. Once Hanzo took his place in the platform, he was greeted by the same young woman with a bouquet of flowers and an envelope of his own. The woman blushed as she handed them to Hanzo, then ran back to her station. Aiko Sato once again came in with a huge applause, and presented Hanzo with the silver medal.
The crowd seemed more excited than ever when it came time to announce the overall winner. "The good people of Tanbo." Yamato started his next sentence, "It is my honor… To present to you the WINNER… Of the ONE HUNDREDTH… SAKE… SATURNALIA… RICE-EATING CONTEST!". The crowd united for the first time, their screams loud enough to echo throughout the entire village like thunder. The windows of nearby houses shook with the same excitement as the crowd around the Sake Saturnalia stage. "With THIRTEEN TOTAL BOWLS EATEN!". The crowd screamed, already recognizing the number and finding out who the winner was. They held back the rest of their screams, so that Yamato could cut through the noise to actually announce the name. "THE FIVE BOWLS EATEN IN JUST FOURTY FIVE SECONDS!". The crowd screamed once again, in amazement of both this accomplishment and the leap in speed between the contestants. "I PRESENT TO YOU THE ONE-HUNDREDTH RICE-EATER KING!" The screams ramped up as Yamato shouted out the winner, "HAYATO!". The loudest cheer of the day echoed throughout the village once again, this time actually shattering some closeby windows.
Once Hayato took his spot on top of the platform, the crowd started cheering ‘HA-YA-TO! HA-YA-TO!’. The same young woman walked by and presented the young shinobi with his own bouquet of flowers and envelope (both of which were visibly much bigger than the ones Hikari and Hanzo had been given). Aiko Sato then took the stage one more time to present Hayato with the golden medal. She walked back applauding the young man. "TANBO, GIVE ONE MORE APPLAUSE TO ALL OF OUR WINNERS!" Yamato shouted into the microphone. It barely cut through the thunderous applause Hayato was getting. "With that applause let’s give Hanzo and Hikari their well-earned thanks and goodbyes, and let’s lead them out of the stage for our final interview with the winner.".
Yamato waited for everyone to shift around on the stage. "As our contestants move out, Tanbo, let me share some quick facts with you. I’m being told that this is the first time THE SAME PERSON won the SPECIAL PRIZE for most bowls eaten AND THE RICE-EATING COMPETITION in TWENTY TWO YEARS!". The crowd applauded again, this time much weaker as they seemed to have used up all of their energy during the last two glass-shattering cheers. "And with the FOURTY FIVE SECOND run by Hayato, he’s now the NUMBER FOURTEENTH FASTEST person to finish this contest. Let’s give another round of applause for Hayato!". The crowd obliged, applauding Hayato as he joined Yamato at the front of the stage, a few meters away from the platform he was standing on a few seconds ago. Everyone other than him and Yamato had presumably left the stage at this point.
Yamato welcomed Hayato towards the front of the stage with a gesture and a sincere smile. He was glad it was one of his friends that had won the entire event. "Congratulations, Hayato!" he said, "That was astonishing. How are you feeling? The microphone is yours if you want to say anything.". Yamato then held the microphone to Hayato for him to give his winning speech.
Once the speech was over, it was time to close the show. "Thank you, Hayato, and once again congratulations! And thank you all, for coming here and being part of this prestigious event! The ONE HUNDREDTH SAKE SATURNALIA RICE-EATING CONTEST is now OVER!". Yamato lead Hayato down the stage with him, as a group of dancers took the stage in elegant clothing. Some of them had some burning torches with them to incorporate it into the choreography.
He met Hanzo and Hikari next to the stage, dragging Hayato along with him. "Wow! Congratulations, all of you. Time to celebrate?".
