Yusuke was asked to do a difficult task, and it was all his fault! The story starts way back before Yusuke graduated from the academy. Yusuke had been unable to shake his old ways. He had a deep desire to prank people to vandalize things. He had been doing alright but then his old gang hit him up. Some boys who lived in the slums and him had been friends for a long time. When his parents were away, He had no one to play with so he spent his time in the Industrial zone after training and school. Why the industrial zone? That was the most happening place for street art! Yusuke saw his first mural when he was at the markets one day buying some ingredients for dinner after school. It was a work of an older artist and a well respected one. “Junji” the woman called herself. Her work was that of a simple desert landscape one would see if they left the walls of the village, but in the detailing of the sand there were portrayals of all of the local wildlife like hidden cave paintings. Yusuke thought they were amazing and ventured into the district to see more works.

During Yusuke’s travels into the district he had met lots of young people that were like him. They liked the street art style that emerged in the rough and tumble village of Sunagakure. Yotaru, Yojibo, Takemitsu, Hiiro. These four youngsters (11,13,16,15 respectively) had met as they took in the various murals around the somewhat seedy industrial district. They soon became fast friends as they traveled around the district getting into trouble. All of them wanted to be street artists as well. They wanted to make a name for themselves and pay homage to the people that inspired them with their work. The world of street art sounded glamorous, and for those that had been hired to do the work, but getting to that point was risky. To practice street art, one needs a large canvas. That usually meant a wall or large structure. As novices, the boys had no permission to do that to buildings, so they just did it without those permissions. They had a system, and they watched each other’s backs. They let two people watch out while the other three made some art. The older boys, Takemitsu and Hiiro, along with Yusuke, due to his training from the academy, were good fighters. With one of them on watch, the others were safe from gangs and other seedy people. They would also be able to avoid authorities, for the most part.

Yusuke quite enjoyed this time with his friends, but they certainly got into trouble. They had been chased by police patrols, and even assaulted by local small gangs. Still they kept going back. They started to deface more and more important properties, and make bigger works. They slowly made a name for themselves as the “ape gang”. They had a small fan base among suna street art enjoyers, and thus the people started leaving them alone when they traveled in and around the industrial district.
The halcyon days were crisp in Yusuke’s memory, but alas, his path was destined to diverge. Despite his friends pleading with him to stay with the ape gang, his being held back really shocked him into walking on a little more straight and narrow path. He still got into a little bit of trouble, but he avoided committing crimes anymore if he could. Leaving the ape gang was hard, but necessary. So why did he think of the past he supposedly left behind. His friends had left him a gift after hearing of his graduation. A small painting of an ape high upon the spire with a caption of sorts reading “Congrats to Yusuke Sarutobi our very own ape soon to be Kazekage xD - Ape Gang”.

Yusuke felt it was his problem for not telling his friends about how serious being a ninja was. He was lucky that they let him off with only cleaning the spire. They would even give him credit for it as a mission. It seemed that the administration had empathized with Yusuke a little. Perhaps they had noticed the change in his behavior? Regardless, Yusuke accepted his punishment with the same seriousness that he would any real mission. I’ll have to take this cleaning very seriously to prove that I am no longer the same knuckle head huh… The boy was alright at keeping things clean; he had already been taking care of most of the chores at home. Yusuke thought of all the cleaning he had done at home. He recalled all the moping and water he used to clean the outside and insides of the house. He realized that it was prudent to dust everything he cleaned on the inside before he went in with the soap and water. It would prevent all that dust from becoming wet and disgusting. He also started to think about what other things and areas may need to be cleaned. Should I start inside or outside? Wait maybe I need a plan before leaving…

Yusuke sat down at the foot of his small bed, and he would devise a plan of action. I think I’ll start outside since the broad daylight should help if I need someone to catch me… The danger of this mission was not lost on Yusuke. There wasn’t a human enemy, but there was an adversary nonetheless. Gravity. Luckily the academy had provided him with a tool to defy this enemy. The surface walking technique would allow him to stay on the side of the spire, but only for as long as his chakra reserves held out. The plan was to wipe the outside with a large dry rag before using a water based solution with soap to clean the rest of the outside. He would likely need to go over the outside once again with a little extra water to make sure that the soap was removed. He also found some of his old paint remover to bring for the art work his friends had left him. Yeah that should handle everything on the outside… Yusuke was proud of what he came up with to handle the outside of the tallest building in Sunagakure, but now he needed to think about the inside.

The inside of the spire was much less dangerous than the outside for many reasons. The sheer drop from the side of the building wouldn’t be a problem once he was inside. The main deterrent for the indoors were the guards. Yusuke would have been worried if he had to deal with them. Luckily, they would be alerted to the fact that he was coming. His identification card and headband would be enough to clear him for entry into all, but the most secret of rooms within the building. He decided he would go to the top to start with and clean from the top to the bottom. Maybe I can even enter from the top as well… The boy thought as he wandered out of the house with a bag packed with additional supplies he thought that he would need to do a proper job. This is a proper mission and it’s even ranked kinda high… The boy gulped an uncharacteristic nervousness swelled over him as he wandered the streets of Sunagakure. The mighty spire rose up before him, ever inching closer. I’ve got to do a great job! I’ll give this everything I’ve got. Yusuke resolved himself as the crowd began to thin. He approached the giant building, tallest in Sunagakure, and noticed the security waiting for him.
Yusuke walked over to the men standing outside at the base of the spire. He noticed that there was a pulley system waiting for him against the outside wall. Of course they would provide that for me. That’ll be a big help! He was glad he wouldn’t actually have to walk up and down the spire himself. As Yusuke approached the men barked orders to him.
Halt kid! You’re approaching the most important building in Sunagakure. The Spire! State your business or we will attack! The man stepped forward as he gave his spiel. He had a scar running across his face from his right eyebrow to his chin diagonally and that stuck out to Yusuke immediately. It seemed that he had seen action before. He wore a typical outfit for a sunagakure shinobi. A cloth head wrap was around his head held up by his shinobi headband. His hair was not visible under the wrap but his dark eyes were underlined by red face paint. His uniform was black and covered by a beige flack jacket. This meant he was at least chunin in rank. Yusuke, sharpened by training with his fellow shinobi, noticed that his partner had drawn a kunai behind his back and was ready to throw it at any point. The other man looked rather similar, but had a much more stout face and bigger nose. He was tanner as well and had green paint under his dark eyes. He also had a large cloth sheet on his back. Marking him as a user of the clothing binding technique. It could be a dangerous situation for an adversary of the sand village, but Yusuke knew what he needed to do to get past them.
I’m Yusuke Sarutobi, the lucky genin that gets to spend all day in the spire cleaning! Yusuke announced with a smile. He then pointed to his face guard showing his affiliation, and then reached into his pocket and pulled out his identification card slowly. Finally he stretched his arm towards the guard giving him the chance to look at his documentation. The higher ranking shinobi sauntered forward clearly, never letting his guard down. His partner also kept his eye trained on Yusuke not moving an inch from his threatening stance.
After looking at his card the chunin’s gaze softened and he smiled. HA! I don’t know what you did kid, but it must have been amazing. They usually have whole teams clean the spire or higher a company to do it. The fact that you got it must mean you messed up big time! Well? What was it? The guard leaned down and elbowed the boy in the ribs. His teasing manner didn’t make Yusuke want to answer, but he had vowed to listen to his superiors, and be the most proper shinobi he could when he graduated late.
I was already in hot water for a couple of incidents involving lizards, but this time I didn’t do anything! I was implicated in the defacing of the glorious spire, and am now doomed to clean up someone else's mess~ Yusuke put a hand to his forehead and leaned back as if the mere thought of the ordeal brought him pain, but he laughed after he finished his theatrical performance.
You see that lovely art up there? I know the people who did it, but since they put my name on it I am the one cleaning it up. Not a big deal though. I’ll have it done by sundown. Yusuke explained. At this point the other guard had relaxed and looked away, obviously stifling a laugh. The first one didn’t even bother to stifle it and gave a big hearty chuckle.
Well, good luck kid let us know when you go inside we’ll have someone escort you. He said as he gave Yusuke a pat on the back.
With the guards blessing, Yusuke walked to the base of the lauded spire. It was here that he would set to work. Okay let’s execute the plan… He was happy that he had come up with a plan of what he would do beforehand. First, he would prepare the pulley system and load up his own gear. Looks like they gave me a few things too… He looked at a small pile of cleaning supplies. Yusuke noted soap and water, brushes, gloves, a mop, and a mountain of rags. Good I just need a little bit of this! He reached into his bag and retrieved a can of paint remover. After setting it down next to the rest of the gear, he also set down the small amount of supplies he had brought with him for the task.
Okay let’s get going then… He stood on the wooden platform attached to the pulley and pulled the rope. He slowly lifted himself and the tools a few feet off of the ground. Going up! He announced. This was mostly to alert the guards. In case of an accident he would be able to count on them for help. At least he hoped that was the case. As he pulled and pulled and pulled he got closer and closer to the artwork his friends had left for him to see.
Finally Yusuke had reached the top of the lofty spire. The boy looked downwards, a critical mistake. He could see the whole of Sunagakure from here. It was a sight to behold, the sand beyond the dome swirled and looked to swallow the great village, but still the village hidden in the sand stood tall. If defied the desert and livid with it at the same time. The unfortunate part of looking down is that Yusuke noticed how far from the ground he was. How close he was to death. One misstep and likely no one would be able to save him. The all too human urge to think about the worst case scenarios in order to preserve your own life hit him. The thought of jumping down to his death passed through his mind. Yusuke was not afraid of heights, but he was afraid of death. He let the thought pass and he distracted himself with a renewed focus on his task.
There were more windows than he thought there would be. He first wiped the window clean with a dry rage before taking the specialized window cleaning solution and spraying it across the windows. After repeating this process across each of the top story windows, he moved the pulley contraction lower.
He was finally at the painting that he was sure had initiated this cleaning session. He had been making his way down the spire using his plan of first removing the dust with a dry rag and then mopping the sides with soap and water. He had been given some wax as well that he used to truly make the outside sparkle. Yusuke had actually been successful in cleaning the whole of the spire except for this one spot. He had given it the same treatment as the rest of the tower, save the waxing, but he wanted to make sure that it was all completely taken care of and removed. He had walked up the side of the spire using the surface walking technique with a mop, a bucket of soapy water, some shining wax, and his special paint remover. First he used the paint remover to get any paint that the initial wash hadn’t. It worked like a charm. The paint was almost burned away from the tower dissipating into the wind. Next he splashed the tower with a bucket of soapy water. He used the mop to rid the surface of any grime before he bent down and used his arm to spread the wax on the surface.
For Yusuke, ridding the spire of the paint was a symbolic moment. He wasn’t just doing his duty he was washing away his mischievous past. By getting rid of it so well he felt himself growing up. He knew that eventually he would be called to risk his life for the hidden sand village. It was a scary thought. Just like looking down from this lofty spire to the village below. In a sense it was also beautiful just like the sight he could behold from only here. He would protect his mom, his friends, the students below him in the academy, and those above him. Yusuke felt his role in the bigger system. He felt a change. He knew he would never forget his times in the industrial district mad at the world and mad at his parents. It would be a part of him, but no longer the part that defined him.
As he finished the waxing a strong breeze came through threatening to blow the genin away. Yusuke’s balance failed and he was pushed westward with the wind.
This wouldn’t be the end of Yusuke Sarutobi; he used the surface walking technique on his hands as well as he did a backflip with the wind’s gale. He landed with four points of contact holding him to the spire. Soon the gale passed and he was able to run down the spire to the safety of the ground.
Once Yusuke got to the ground, he collected himself, and made his way to the guards he had spoken with before. Sir, I’m ready to go inside! Yusuke announced with cheer.
The guard turned and looked to him then to the tower. Not bad kid, not bad at all. The Spire is really sparkling! Let’s see if you can get the inside looking good too. The man looked to the sun and gauged its position. You timed it well too! Got about half the day left. The man led Yusuke inside, and then up the long staircase to the top of the building.
Yusuke entered the Kazekage’s office, but the Kazekage was nowhere to be seen. It was tidy enough but there were papers everywhere. Be careful kid! The papers are not to be disturbed.
Got it you can count on me! Yusuke then set to work He carefully dusted the room’s floors, shelves, chairs, and anything else he could get to without causing a mess. The dexterity of a shinobi was on full display here. Yusuke got everything clean with great detailing leaving a pleasant smell and a sparkling appearance.
Nice work! Don’t do too good a job or they might make you clean here all the time haha! The guard was joking, but what made him laugh was the harrowed expression Yusuke made in response to it.
Just messing with you kid, Let’s get to the halls then the next room. The Guard motioned Yusuke to follow him.
After a long day of cleaning, Yusuke had left the entirety of the Spire sparkling clean, but he was fully exhausted. He walked through Suna’s streets with heavy shoulders. I really gotta get some rest… The boy thought. He was counting the minutes until he could rest. The next time he awakened the past would be in the past. He would be the new Yusuke Sarutobi.
