Eternity and Snow were prepping for their surfing competition. They had entered in some kind of team competition where the scores would be averaged between two people. It was a way of making it more fair so that a really good surfer couldn’t just win on their own. Also, someone who sucked had a chance of being ranked higher. They were tending to their rental surf boards on the shore. Who knew that so many people would enter this thing? At least it was a day to day thing with no re-entries. That made it certain that newbies had an actual chance at winning.
Eternity talked to some of the competition. She wondered just how many of these were shinobi that would cheat. “Well you’re not a shinobi or missing nin, or so you claim,” a man offered in his defense. “I was expecting a slew of shinobi to particpate. You came in here with no experience and you expected a good time? I don’t know where you’re from but around here there’s order to follow.” Eternity didn’t respond. She didn’t want to relate herself to him at all. She just wanted to be a blip on the map that didn’t cause any unnecessary trouble. She’d come to this country for a reason and her getting a bit of money and was totally separate from her desire to complete her primary purpose. She just wanted to be able to buy some armor and weaponry because as she was she didn’t think she could win any sort of real fight. Some weirdoes in a cave? Sure but not a shinobi that she was going to have to face off against soon enough. Just the thought of being ambushed by someone like a scary hyuuga with the ability to see her from so far away and be totally aware of her presence was just too much to think about. Like what could she even do? Pack up her shit and run? That’d go well. No, actually, that would go horribly. If someone was even around to help her it would be far too late and she’d probably be dead before anyone showed up. At least she had the foresight to realize this and come with a backup plan. Nobody would catch her slippin and venturing out totally defenseless with nothing but an item to save her.
Well, that was enough internal ramblings. She’d just finished cleaning all the grime from her board so all that was left was to test it out. She and Snow on the beach worked together to put the board into the proper locations and lined it up with the water and started getting some practice in. This took forever but at least it gave them a chance to chit chat. The women seemed to have gotten over their fatigue from their last missions and were happy to get a move on and finish up here. One of the men told them about a fight he once had because that’s all he really did nowadays, talk about the old days where he used to pwn noobs left and right. He spoke of a girl with a sword who had engaged in battle with him. Apparently she had not targeted his chest, but the tree behind him. A basic principle Taïjutsu in the art of concealing one’s true intentions. He told her how they fought against the tree and it collapsed, sending fruit falling from the branches, crashing against the ground.
“So you use medical jutsu?” she asked. The man would have scabbed over even without the jutsu but at least he had healed from one of his surfing wounds quick enough to help. She wondered what could push people to let money become such an engine in their lives... Humanity has facets that are as surprising as they are distressing. He then went on about medicine and Snow realized she was talking to someone who loved to hear himself talk. He talked about a much more serious wounded that he had treated by injecting syrum at the level of his chest with a needle soaked in chakra. Then his heart rate was going to accelerate, his breathing became faster and faster. Then his heart would fall asleep, definitely... He went into so much detail that it disgusted them to no end. She just wanted to get the surfing mission over with, not hear this guy’s life story. But that was what she was doing because there was fuck all to do but wait for the waves to come. About half of them had been so lackluster that nobody could really do anything and a quarter had been missedat this point and were long gone. Eternity busied herself with practicing some more as the man went on and on.
As the two worked, they were unfortunate enough to get drawn into the story the man told her. He recounted a time he had to retrace steps and find a notorious villain, the intended victim of this expedition and the ultimate killing in his book. He had taken at least an hour early that he had to go back up. He even went into details that nobody would ever care about. He explained his thoughts about what he was going to say to his enemy while his two comrades lay on the ground ten yards behind him. He would tell that they went on ahead, believing that they had seen something and that they had asked her to warn him. He then told how he took the time to bury them away from the side road. Covering their locations with marbles formed in clay soil and flowers he delicately uprooted wild shoots. Against this sensory ninja he wanted to face off against he had to avoid using chakra. But that was all either of them wanted to hear about this shitty story of his. It wasn’t entertaining and it only served to waste time. It was all good though. The ladies had figured out the basics of surfing and were confident that they could come close to wining this competition. “Nice story, but I have to be going,” she said. The man seemed sad that his only company was leaving but he shrugged. He just sat down and thought about all the adventures he had been on which left them to leave as she saw fit.
Eternity made her way out of the waters and back onto the mostly abandoned shores it was time to get a move on. She didn’t want to be stuck in any one place for too long lest trouble came knocking. She didn’t know why anyone would be after her since she appeared to be a novice and she really didn’t have hardly anything to her name, but she would be prepared nonetheless. At least with this bit of money she could hopefully buy some armor. She had a certain kind of armor in mind but she was going to have to probably go to a blackmarket to get it since she didn’t think the village of this nation was going to do every much for her. She doubted she could even find it really. She sat at the shore and eventually the man came over. “You still here? Go catch some more waves,” he suggested jokingly. “Yeah I’m still here. I’m trying to figure out what to do and if I can win,” she said. “I was told to go win this thing but the competition starts soon and I’m still not amazing. But I don’t even know where to look.” “There’s always luck,” the man said with a shrug. “Maybe the ones who are pretty strong are taking a break and won’t show up. There’s bound to be powerful bloodlines out there.”
“Heh you think?” Eternity laughed, “yeah right, like I could go there. I’d never even find a win.” “Win?” The man said with his own laugh,” Find a way to take down the competition and you could probably just breeze your way to a victory. But that in itself is a tall order. Now don’t take this as advice or anything. I wouldn’t be caught dead trying to do anything risky but maybe you could catch someone as they left or before they entered the wave. That’s probably the easiest way if I’m being honest.” She nodded and said, “thanks.” She had to think about what direction she wanted to go next. Losing was exactly not what was on her to do list for the day. Well, that was something for her to think about. She thought that she would just head back to the surf board shop though. Things were not exactly going as planned out here and she had spent quite a bit of time circling around the ideas in her head and couldn’t figure out what the fuck she was actually supposed to be doing out here.
The question was, was it worth returning empty handed? Thoughts for tonight. She walked out towards the shores and tried to be at peace with the world. She knew that the sun was going to set soon and that meant that she needed to find some kind of shelter. Without said shelter she was going to be completely fucked if it decided to rain, which didn’t look like it was going to happen but one could never be too safe. She found a number of pieces of wood and a number of large beach leaves to use as shade while she prepared for the competition to come. She was in for some pretty wacky dreams if she knew her own brain well enough.
She had with her, a survival kit which would be complementary to her dreams. She a small backpack with food and water, what it took to survive what, nothing more. Oh yes, she also had a locally crafted good luck charm. she needed about two minutes of swimming to reach the highest point of her mission, an elevated place where she could watch them quietly in order to be quick and efficient afterwards. Certainly, she could get a good vantage and plan to get there faster. If she really hauled ass from the top of the waves she could be there in a few minutes. However, she must play the card of finesse and discretion right now, so that they suspected absolutely nothing, and that the surprise effect was in full effect.
Snow did her best during the competition. The waters were not all that impressive or crazy which made it easy for her to stay on her board. Unfortunately for the competition, they hadn’t spent time practicing so most of them just ended up falling off anyways. It was cheating, she thought, to be able to stand on water to avoid falling in the water but she didn’t fall, which was good. Eternity didn’t do too badly either. She was more aggressive than the others though and actively cut people off and made them wipe out. It was a guilty little pleasure of hers to be able to do stuff like that. By sundown the victors were declared, and at the top? Eternity and Snow! Now they had to figure out what to do with the rest of their day. They looked at the pittance they’d won and wondered if it was worth having spent an entire day prepping for the competition.
It looked like this time they were after a certain kind of relaxation medicine that the locals said would help them chill out containing a kind of specific chakra. Eternity had in hand the map where she had to go, it was not very far. However, the mission was not going to be simple. Though she thought taking these drugs head-on would be a bad idea, since according to what rumors had told her, the cult who guarded these famous herbs were rather powerful, so she had to innovate. But hey, first of all, she intended to go to the place, not far away to observe them, and to look for a plan. While she was walking, because she had already taken the road, she tried her best to keep to herself.

Eternity and Snow were hired to do stunt doubling for some scenes in a movie. They were perfect because they were basically twins. The plan was to have them stay in the most dangerous part of town and to film them stealing from a stall. It was dangerous because there were mercenary guards. The director wanted the suspense to be real. So, Eternity “woke up” one morning to the growling of her stomach. It was a common occurrence as of late because she had consistently avoided spending money on food. There was always something else to buy, another tool to help with lockpicking. Managing money was never her strong suit and she was still adjusting to being out on her own. She owned a home but she quickly learned that owning a place didn’t mean as much as she thought it would. Being an adult seemed to come with new challenges every day and she had to face them head on or suffer the consequences.
“Snap out of it,” she told herself as she shuffled across the floor. Her floor was in its usual messy state. Clothes were strewn across the surface along with misplaced items so it was never quite clear where it was safe to step. Her promises to clean her living space were almost never fulfilled.
“I’ll just buy some day-old bread and go fetch some water,” she said. She’d pulled on some casual clothes appropriate for the season and was ready to go but there was only one problem. The pouch that contained her funds was entirely empty. It had some weight to it but when she looked inside it was filled with various bits of junk. She couldn’t even remember why there were bits of iron and metal and wood in her purse. Maybe it’d been open last time she had gone sifting through junk. She was honestly impressed with how the camera crew was able to hide cameras everywhere.
“Change of plan, I’ll have to go swipe some bread and something to get me through the week.” She hated that she had basically no money. Sure, she had valuables and a net worth that was about average but in terms of liquidity well, there was no liquidity. Eternity slipped out of the clothes she’d just put on and considered what to put on instead. A change in plans called for a change in her outfit. She settled on her black clothing, just a simple longsleeve shirt and pants combo. She hated to have to rely on long sleeved clothing in this weather but it was the baggiest shirt she owned and she needed to be able to hide things within it. Thankfully she could roll the sleeves up so that it wouldn’t be so bad. She also tied some cloth around her forehead and hair so that she would be less recognizable. It was a poor disguise, but it was better than nothing.
The reason Eternity chose dark clothing was because she intended to spend some time in the shade and she wanted to do so without being overly noticeable. She walked to the local market and found a shaded spot where there wasn’t too much foot traffic. She found her dark clothing did well to blend her into the shadows and keep her from casually wandering eyes. She folded her arms and leaned against a stack of empty wooden crates and took a look at what she was dealing with. She saw the flow of traffic, the various merchants, and their goods. At a first glance that was all she could see, but she knew she needed to focus a little more. She ran her eyes across the crowd again and tried to spot anyone of notable wealth. Someone with expensing looking clothes or a noticeable amount of jewelry.
“Really? Nobody?” she mumbled to herself annoyedly. The issue was more that she had trouble recognizing details at a distance rather than there being a lack of pickpocketing targets. She didn’t have all day to look for a jackpot target especially when her stomach started growling again. She had to turn her attention towards the guards. These were not as hard to spot. They were very obvious by design to deter people like her from taking advantage of the merchants. Fortunately for Eternity, they were mostly stationed around the merchants selling more valuable goods. At this point Eternity’s head was spinning. There was so much to focus on. The people, the stalls, the guards, it all added up to a mess in her head which made her resort to heavy breathing to set her mind straight. She decided to take things one thing at a time so that she didn’t go crazy in the heat.
Eternity prioritized the list of things to do in her mind and took some time to analyze where the guards were stationed and to find a relatively unprotected merchant. She ultimately decided on someone who was selling some kind of bread which was convenient because that was exactly what she craved in the moment. She couldn’t get ahead of herself though. “One step at a time” she reminded herself.
She formulated a plan and a path then started walking towards the nearest merchant. Her plan was to just make her way down the line of merchants and casually swipe some bread as she passed. She’d never tried this strategy before, but she couldn’t think of a better way of seeming like a genuine customer. The hardest part, she found, was trying to act like she was interested in the various products of the merchants. She seemed very disinterested and kept glancing over in the direction of the bread stall. She realized she had to adapt her plan after a handful of stalls because she thought she was looking a little too suspicious.
Eternity decided to move to the stall right next to the baker’s. Her new plan was to wait for someone to distract the baker and in that moment she wanted to grab some bread and put it in her shirt. She practiced moving her hand in and out of her shirt subtly as she walked, imagining that her hand were grasping right around a chunk of bread and just tucking it safely between her thigh and her pants. Since her shirt was so baggy all people should have been able to see was her hand moving in and out of the bottom of her shirt.
Eternity waited, and waited, and waited for the stars to align. She feigned interest in the neighboring stall’s goods but she could only do that for so long before there was no convincing reason for her to be there. She ended up staring at the merchant, grasping for something else to say to stall for time. She was met with a look that told her that it was probably best for her to get going. Eternity took a nervous glance at the baker’s stall and decided to go with plan B. She would need Snow’s help after all. Eternity slipped into an alleyway where the camera crew and Snow waited. The director snapped his fingers and Snow tagged out with Eternity.
Snow stepped out and noticed there was a lovely elderly couple standing there making purchases of bread but the only spot she could stand was still in plain view of the baker. The baker was a very thick man. His forearms and hands looked like they’d been put to work for decades. The thought of just grabbing some bread and bolting crossed her mind several times but she could just picture him reaching out and wringing her by the neck if he saw her even reaching for the bread. Her plan which had seemed so perfectly crafted in her mind seemed impossible in her moment of nervousness. She couldn’t even stand to look the baker in the eye as they eventually conversed. Once his full attention was on her, she knew that it was no use trying to steal from him.
She dejectedly turned away from the baker and thought she would start all over with a different merchant. That was when she spotted the people that had just bought some bread. They were only a little ways away and they were talking with another merchant. Their woven basket that contained the bread rested on the floor! She then thought that it would be so much easier to just swipe the basket than trying her luck robbing a stall. As much as she aspired to be a good thief, she was far from achieving those goals. If only she had a mentor in this area, though she wasn’t quite sure how to find one.
"Well... Now that the plan is made, I'm going to start by looking for these jokers... she would identify them by their looks first ..." Closing her eyes, she began to concentrate, then saw someone powerful looking not far from her, surely one of them. To begin with, she had to avoid using her chakra, and rather intended to rely on discretion. She started to knead her chakra strongly, and wondered if anyone could feel it. Anyway, since this first was not far from the less seedy part of town, she could think until now that it was probably safe to cast a genjutsu if necessary. She was moving away from the stall, she finally had a visual on her first target. It was a woman who was carrying a rabbit with a herb in its mouth in her arms. She was quite sturdy and quite tall, with a nice blade on her back. Each of her steps were heavy, she looked powerful in the mysterious sort of way. Was she a planted guard? One that was supposed to be the sneaky kind who was supposed to keep watch in disguise? Leaving all her things in the stall where she was first was, she jumped discreetly to follow her. It was far enough from the market for me to attack it. Snow was perched just above her, she could not feel her, nor see her for that matter, in view of the blind spot where she was.
“It’s now or never,” she told herself. She couldn’t say guards or others were watching but she could clearly see the couple who owned the basket were not paying any attention, and the merchant was busy with something behind his stall. She walked up behind the couple and bent down as if she was going to pick up something off the floor. She definitely could have done a better job at concealing her movements, but she was able to tear off a chunk of bread and slip it under her shirt without the couple noticing. In that moment she wished she’d taken more but she didn’t want to push her luck. She quickly hurried off back into the crowd where she’d take the large chunk of bread out and gobble it down very quickly.
Relief washed over her body and for once this morning she could think clearly. With her belly satiated for the time being she moved back home. She finally accepted that she’d have to sell some of her stuff to make ends meet, at least until she built up her courage.
Things really should have ended there. The director got all the shots he needed from Eternity and Snow trying to steal from a dangerous marketplace but things just had to turn sour.
“Hey, I saw you trying to steal that,” a guard said. He was menacing looking. Clearly a missing nin or something of the sort. He drew a sword at which point Eternity jumped from the alley onto his back.
“Get off me!” he shouted with a pirate’s accent.
“Never!” Eternity shouted. She drove her elbow into his neck repeatedly until he gave up.
“Get out of here!” she shouted to Snow but now all the guards were aware that something was going down. The civilians didn’t know what was happening, but if someone was fighting the guards then something was up. Luckily they were able to make a break for it and escape. What a relief!
