Eternity looked into the sky. It was sunny, the air was salty. She didn’t know why but she felt like she was lying on sand instead of her bed. That’s when she remembered that she was at the beach! She sat up and saw that she was exactly where she was supposed to be. Everything started making sense now. She remembered taking a trip with Snow here. Snow was her friend. Not because they shared any kind of special bond, but because the circumstances that had caused them to meet necessitated that they got along. Now that Eternity’s mind was clearing she could remember that she had only come on this trip in order to get to know Snow better.
Snow was not next to her though, as she should have been. Eternity sat up and tried to find her. The beach was not that full today so it was fairly easy to spot Snow who hadn’t wandered too far. She was kneeling next to a little boy who couldn’t have been older than seven. Eternity couldn’t tell what they were doing so she got up and walked over.
“Snow? I thought you were sunbathing, what’s going on over here?” Eternity asked.
“He needed help with his sand castle so I decided to help,” Snow said.
“Yeah she’s really good at it!” the boy exclaimed.
“A sand castle really? How childish,” Eternity scoffed.
“Yes a sand castle, don’t be mean. Come help or go away, you’re killing the vibe.” Snow shifted her position so that she could add some detail to the wall of the sandcastle that she’d just constructed.
Eternity didn’t want to help because she knew she was going to be no good at it. However now she felt like the weird one in the group and was compelled to at least try. She knelt down and watched as the little boy fetched some soft sand from near the water. He put the mushy sand next to the castle and mixed it with the dry sand. He then used the resulting sand to reinforce his design.
“That doesn’t look so hard,” Eternity thought. She tried it for herself and was amazed at how hard it was to get the right consistency of sand. She wished she had a bucket of water so she could just add water until the sand was wet enough instead of the other way around.
Eternity spent most of her time playing with the consistency and fetching wet sand while Snow and the boy worked on the castle. It was a group effort and before long they created a nice little castle with a massive wall surrounding it. It was not artistic by any means but it looked structurally sound.
“Now what,” Eternity asked. She had been bored since she started and she couldn’t imagine making the sand castle any bigger.
“Now we go do something else,” Snow said with a smirk as the little boy began ramming his foot into their hard work. The women couldn’t help but laugh. They walked away from the boy and looked for something else to occupy their time.

Eternity and her friend Snow walked along the beach for what seemed like an hour. The weather was nice though so they didn’t mind much. It was a fun enough experience just to talk to one another and enjoy the sand between their toes. Eventually they grew bored of the same old scenery and started looking for something interesting. Most people were either playing in the water or sleeping on the beach so there really was not much that stood out. That was, until they came across two people who were shouting at each other.
“I saw you looking at her!” shrieked a woman to a man.
“I wasn’t! I was just staring out at the ocean!” bellowed the man to a woman.
“I should have never married someone with wandering eyes, how could I ignore all the warning signs? I gave you the benefit of the doubt last time but this is the last straw!” the woman shrieked back.
Eternity asked one of the other onlookers, “what’s their problem?”
“Sounds like they’re a newly wed couple that are having a fight. I think she caught him looking at other women on the beach.”
“Oh…” Eternity said. She did not know how she would react if a boyfriend of hers would look at other women. She was usually the one who lost interest first and she definitely felt no remorse for taking interest in others. Then again, she wasn’t married and she’d have higher expectations of a lifelong mate. That being said, who was to say that the woman was even telling to truth? Maybe she was batshit crazy, just as she appeared at face value. Eternity didn’t really want to get pulled into their mess but Snow had other plans.
“You two need to stop causing a scene!” Snow shouted at them. “newsflash lady, people like looking at attractive people. I’m sure you do it too. What makes you both special is that you agreed not to pursue others. So get over it!”
Eternity stepped up and said, “yeah, listen to her!” while wishing she had something insightful to add. The rest of the onlookers joined in and the couple regained their composure.
The couple didn’t have much else to say because they were so embarrassed. They sat down with red faces and waited until the crowd dispersed. Eternity and Snow walked away but they looked over their shoulders from time to time to see them making out. That seemed to be their kind of relationship… fighting and making up. It made Eternity think of how often she’d fought with Snow, even on their way to the beach. It’d never taken away from their friendship. If anything, it added to the strength of their bond.
“Whacha thinkin about?” asked Snow a few minutes later. She could see that Eternity was lost from her blank expression and glazed over eyes.
“Nothing,” Eternity said. She drew the word out so that it would be obvious that she was hiding the real answer. She looked around to find something to change the subject.
