A hellava hangover
Wed Jan 04, 2023 11:16 pm
Rin strode through the town streets, a horrid throbbing pain radiating through her head as the harsh morning sun shone down upon her. The last night's activities were a blur, it had been well over a year since she had partaken in any illicit substances, even alcohol hadn't graced her lips for many months, the expense prohibitive for someone in the position she had found herself since the bastard wreathed in corruption had left his mark upon her; of course that wasn't the only reason that she refrained from partaking in the liquid bliss, she was well aware of the risk of addiction such an escape posed for someone in her circumstances, the first few months of her condition she had spent slowly retreating in on herself, falling back on old habits, most of which involved drinking and gambling.
When the weight of the dark sage's shadow became too much for her gambling companions to continue associating with her they had fled, taking a large sum of her funds with them in what Rin had later found out had been a rigged game. That should probably have been a warning sign for her, even at her worst, before the events in the shattered sands, she would have caught such a ruse well before it had gotten so far, but lost deep in the bottle as she had been at the time she hadn't noticed anything awry until it was too late.
Perhaps she should have stopped then, withdrawn from her blossoming alcoholism, but with her powers gone, her spirit mutilated, her body broken, and her so called friends scattered to the winds, desperate to get as far away from her as possible. What did she really have left except for the bottle. She had languished like that for months, drowning her sorrows and her body in the amber poison that she so favoured, until eventually the last of her funds had run out.
The first few weeks had been torture, absolute agony, the withdrawal from something her body had come to view as a necessity driving her even lower than she had been at the depths of her alcoholism. She spent days sheltering in gutters and alleyways, tremors wracked her body with a force that only seemed to be magnified by the corruption within her veins, eventually the weeks turned to months and her memory turned to a blur. She remembered flashes of that time, fractured memories, doing things she never would have thought she could lower herself to, flashes of acts so degrading she often blocked them out.
Rin shook her head, turning her thoughts away from the painful memories, a choice that proved to be a mistake as the vigorous motion had her leaning against a nearby wall, struggling to keep down the contents of her stomach. With a groan she pushed herself off the wall, heading towards the markets, she had promised herself a shopping trip today, especially after her travel worn garb had looked so out of place at last nights festivities; first though she needed breakfast and a hangover cure.
Eventually she made her way to the entry of one of the town's many, many, market squares, a cute little caffe sitting on the street corner, a number of white woven whicker chairs laid out along the sides of the street, comfortable cotton cushions placed upon them for additional comfort. The bustling little business had many of the townsfolk sitting enjoying a coffee or an early breakfast; she couldn't help but eye one of the patrons enjoying a croissant filled with ham and cheese who's smell made Rin's stomach audibly rumble with desire.
Deciding to acquiesce to her bodies demands Rin wandered into the little business, a smile blossoming over her face despite the pulsating hangover that still whined for attention in the back of her mind. The cafe's interior was lined with cakes, pastries and other delicious smelling creations that somehow blended the festive energy of the town with more traditional elements, all topped off with the subtle but pervasive scent of high grade coffee.
Rin had never been one for coffee, at least before the life shattering events in the sands of sunagakure, she had always favoured the refined flavour and appearance of tea, but since her brutalising at the hands of the pale shade... well subtle flavours just felt empty, her senses for pleasure had been dramatically dulled and she had found even coffee often failed to provide much flavour on its own.
Stepping up to the counter and giving the girl manning the register a smile she ordered what had long become her standard order.
"If it's not too much trouble could i get a Pumpkin spice soy latte with cold foam, extra cinnamon, hazelnut, and 2 shots of espresso... oh and one of those delicious croissant's with ham and cheese that I can smell if you have any left." She said politely, pulling out a coin to pay before wandering back outside, looking around for an open seat.
While she had been inside the last of the tables had filled out with people, but there were a few tables that only had a single person sitting there. Picking one at random she sidled up to a beautiful young woman who was sitting there, enjoying a drink of her own.
"Sorry to interrupt miss, but would this seat be taken?" she asked politely, waiting for a positive response from the woman before sitting down.
