An oath of Fealty (Genin Exam)

Genin Exam:

After years of wandering, running, stealing, and thieving, the scorch swordsman Roy Goka had made his way toward Hoshigakure and was now waiting in a classroom filled with students to take the genin exam. Roy had been on track to be a genin in the hidden volcano, a life that has long since been denied to him after being ferried away from the village after his father died, which stunted Roy's ninja growth. Still, the time had now come for him to take the exam, a 16-year-old, and swear his allegiance to the village hidden by the stars... or whatever. 

Roy knew his position; he was a weak, untrained, green shinobi who wouldn't stand a chance against a real ninja. Sure, he might find ways to survive this unforgiving world, but to truly master it, Roy needed guidance. To get that guidance, the student must swear his loyalty to this village and pledge to uphold their values and traditions. Or at least, that's what Roy wanted to believe. He sure didn't trust this village yet, nor did he expect the village to trust him, but if becoming a genin of the village was how Roy could complete his goal of being a great swordsman, then so be it.

Roy had been told that he could take the test earlier than those in class due to his previous training. Roy could appreciate that the village recognized that he was beyond the fundamentals at this point, and the only way to grow was to get them on track to becoming a genin. Still, the student would have to prove that he was ready for such a jump and needed to complete the exam with flying colors. Roy knew that he would need to complete the clone and transformation technique beforehand, so he had been training for the past few weeks to ensure they were mastered.

After training and help from Hiroshi, a fellow ninja, and new genin, Roy was confident that now was the time he earned his headband. Roy wasn't too fond of taking a test in a controlled environment, he'd instead show his combat skills, but that just isn't how the exams worked here.

Roy didn't want to make a scene; he wanted to sit down, look silently outwards to the gardens outside the academy, and wait for his turn. Many other students here would eye Roy and his standoffish demeanor with varying degrees of contentment. Roy learned through doing, and Roy learned best through fighting, but he found that many of the students he went to class with didn't want to spar. Even Hiroshi, the genin that taught him chakra control, hesitated at the thought of a spar or taijutsu training, which disappointed him. Still, he sat at his desk looking out the window, practicing what Hiroshi had taught him and clearing his mind for the exam ahead.

Roy's head would swivel as the student's name was called. A confident woman would be the one to echo to him, reminding him of his days at the academy in the hidden volcano. There a woman very similar to Natsuki would be the one teaching the classes, and Roy wondered where that woman had gone now that the village they both lived in was a shell of their former selves. As the group of kids in the classroom looked towards Roy as he was called, he could see some of them giving him nods of encourgaments or smiles of good fortune. Unsure of how to respond to them, Roy would simply get up from his seat, walk towards the ninja and head outside the room.

It was hard to not feel like a number as he was escorted from one room to the next, looking around him he could see the faces of students who had clearly failed their exam, crying as they were unable to move forward with their ninja career yet, others happy and cheerful as they held a ninja headband in their hands, their parents congratulating them, or celebrating with their friends along the way. Roy had neither parents nor friends yet here in Hoshigakure, there would be nobody to weep for him or cheer for him, but that was alright in Roy's mind, after all his goal was to become the greatest swordsman he could be, not be liked or loved.

As Roy entered the room into the exam hall he would find himself feeling a bit shadowed by all the established ninja that were around him, proctors that looked like fresh ninja all the way to senior veterans were lining the room, making sure that there was no chance for cheating or disturbances. Admittedly, Roy was a little uncomfortable being around so many ninja that he knew were stronger than him, but no matter, he still had youth on his side, and a chance to grow into a strong ninja starting today.

Roy would intently listen to the instructions of the proctor as he was directed to complete both the clone and transformation technique along with an explanation of their benefits in combat. Roy would watch closely as one of the other proctors even showed Roy an example of how to complete both techniques, which meant that there was no room for error here, nor was there much chance for him to mess this up. He had been training for this day for weeks now and had memorized exactly what he needed to do in this situation.

"Um..." Roy would start to say, he didn't realize that he was so nervous being instructed to display his abilities. Mocking a quick cough,  Roy would continue.

"Clones create a distraction used to disorient and confuse the enemy; the transformation technique is more subtle, tricking opponents into the thinking I'm something, or someone else, is a great tool if used correctly. Both these jutsu form the basis of chakra control, if I can't do these, then there is no reason for me to be here." Roy would say.

Taking a deep breath, the student swordsman would weave the hand seal as he followed the steps given to him by Hiroshi. After a deep breath, the genin - bound ninja would create a puff of smoke, and a few moments later a transformation of Hiroshi would form. Roy would become slightly shorter, his hair would change from red to a long white, wearing more acceptable attire than the rags Roy was currently fitted with.

"This ninja, Hiroshi, helped me a lot, and it's a reminder that it's ok to ask for help, especially in training." Roy would conclude, waiting a few seconds before dispersing the transformation and returning back his original form.

A few moments later Roy would weave the ram seal in his hands, allowing the chakra to pour from his body, into this hands, and in that moment when he was ready to unleash a puff of smoke would appear, and a moment later Roy would be flanked by two copies of himself, not wanting to look at them, Roy would simply hold the clones for a few seconds, allow them to disperse, and look at Natsuki straight on.

"Well?"

Roy waited in anxious anticipation for the result of the exam. The result didn't take long, as the proctors, all of whom appeared to review his work, nodded in approval. A few moments later, a genin headband was gifted to the student, now a ninja of the this hidden village. Roy accepted this headband, understanding that full well that has under their guidance, protection, and orders. Roy had given up his freedom, a life that was filled with running and thieving, and traded it for something that he hoped, or at least dared to hope, would be more. 


"Thank you" Roy would say, as he exited the room, and put the headband on his head. Roy took the words the proctor took with care and pondered them for a moment, but Roy wasn't much of a thinker, he knew that he could live by those principles by acting instead of saying. 


Roy would leave the academy ready to start the next chapter of his life, a genin of Hoshigakure.
