Taking The Cake
On a gloomy, rain-filled, and dreary morning while the clothing shop was closed Junko decided it would be a great day to surprise the elderly couple with some fresh baked goods from the bakery nearby. She quickly got dressed then quietly snuck past the elderly couple, excited to surprise and hopefully impress them with some nice baked goods! She waited a few moments for the rain to let up a little before scurrying out into the streets. The walk was uneventful other than the consistent need to dodge water puddles.
Upon arriving at the bakery and placing an order Junko overheard what she presumed was one of the bakers lamenting to what seemed to be the owner. The baker complained about a group of squirrels coming into the bakery that morning and stealing a birthday cake someone had ordered. For a few minutes the baker and owner seemed to go back and forth on the matter, how it could be resolved, and how it could be prevented. After a few minutes, the baker came out with her order and handed it to her.
Deciding to help these poor people she mentioned she had overheard the conversation about the squirrels and would like to offer any help she could provide. The baker then thanked her profusely, exclaiming that they didn’t have anyone to watch the baked goods in the morning while they were cooling. The baker is too busy baking, and the clever squirrels wait till their back is turned to strike. They found out how they were getting in but didn’t have time to do anything about it. The next morning they have a carpenter coming to look at the spot and potentially fix it, but are worried about the baked goods in the meantime.
She made a deal that she would help guard the baked goods overnight while they waited for the repairman to come that morning. With the deal arranged she headed off back to the old couple's home then happily produced her slightly damp tarts, breads, and some snacks. The three of them enjoyed some great breakfast, and Junko spent the rest of the day relaxing and preparing for the night at the bakery.
As the sun began setting the rain finally stopped, and Junko was able to make it to the bakery relatively dry. The owner and a few others were doing their closing routines when she arrived. The owner showed her where they kept their baked goods and where she’d be guarding overnight. It wasn’t long until all the staff had left, and she was alone. She brought a book that the old woman gave her, some kind of romance novels she collected.
The night was uneventful, with no sight nor sound of said squirrels. Soon the sun began to rise and the staff flooded in. The bakery soon flooded with smells of delicious loaves of bread, cakes, cookies, and various different foods. Now was when they stole the cake yesterday so Junko was constantly on guard. Soon a handful of brave squirrels rushed into the kitchen, looking to grab whatever they could get their little hands on. Using a full sink nearby Junko formed some water shurikens and launched them at each of the squirrels, making sure not to actually hit any of them but just enough to scare them away. This continued for a few hours but she was able to keep them at bay.
Soon enough the repair man came and fixed up the holes they were climbing in through. As a thank you the owner put together a little basket for her with a bunch of baked goods. She gratefully accepted and made her way back to the couple's house. There she had some breakfast and promptly fell asleep.

Gnome Body Knows
One chilly but sunny morning, Junko slowly dragged herself out of bed and prepared herself for the day. As she wandered to the kitchen there sat the elderly lady and what seemed to be her neighbor. They were both sipping what looked to be black tea and looked as if they were catching up. She never had a community to call her own so she always felt some warmth in her heart whenever she saw others interacting with theirs.
They began speaking of some troubling events that occurred in the neighbor's garden the night before. The neighbor lamented for a few minutes about the difficulties of having their own garden. Planting, harvesting, maintaining, and a list of other kinds of manual labor. As Junko sat to eat breakfast, the neighbors continued on saying that they thought something was breaking into the garden and stealing various vegetables.
The elderly woman Junko lives with mentioned that Junko might be able to help. For a moment or so she boasted about the jobs Junko successfully had done around town already and urged Junko to take the job. She reluctantly agreed, hunting gnomes and protecting gardens weren’t really her thing but she wanted to be helpful to the community. As they finished up breakfast the conversation moved onto another subject and soon the neighbor left.
For the rest of the day, Junko worked in the clothing shop and began planning how she would hide from the potential thieves. After the shop closed, she had some dinner and then headed over to the neighbor's house. While there she spoke more with the neighbors about their concerns, what they thought the issue was, and what they would like to have happen. As the sun set she climbed on top of their garden shed and awaited the thieves' arrival.
A few hours passed and nothing happened, but soon the silence in the garden was broken. She soon heard footsteps, human-sized footsteps. Peaking off the roof, she spotted a human figure farting into a shrub nearby. She stealthily climbed down from the roof and snuck towards the shrub the figure was hiding in. As she crept forward she could hear what sounded like a young man talking to himself. She heard him say “I have to do this for her, they won’t even notice I was here. It’s okay, I’m okay” repeatedly to himself.
She let out a loud sigh and stood up, no longer sneaking around. She told the young man to come out and promised not to hurt him. Reluctantly the young man came out and introduced himself as Kai. She chastised him for trespassing, and stealing but after asked him why. Kai told her that he and his sister were orphaned, they didn’t want to orphanage because they’d separate the two of them. So he had been “borrowing” food from some of the neighbors to keep them fed.
Not knowing what to do, she introduced Kai to the people who hired her and explained his situation. Thankfully these people were very kind and accepted the apology Kai presented to them. After some discussion, they decided to take in Kai and his sister Yumi for the time being. Before going home Junko escorted Kai to where they had been staying, and she helped them gather what little belongings they had. She then dropped them off at their new home, then wandered back to her new home as well.
