It had been a few days, and Kozai had already finished his little box of treats. The only food he had now in the house was some dried meat that he had processed some time back. Well, it was certainly better than nothing, but now, this brought to his mind a rather disturbing fact. He needed to go hunt again. The act of slaughtering an animal didn't bother him, but he didn't want to deprive his neighbors of food... or he could get a job. But that would mean getting back into the ninja world... But... he didn't want to.
Well, in that case, it was time to do a somewhat distasteful task. However, Kozai in his current state couldn’t choose any other options. He got up, and went to his wall, taking Hyakkasou off and sealing it into his wristband. Then, slipping on a black coat, he went out to the jungle. The rain was much lighter today, making the jungle much more inhabitable and tolerable. It also meant that for the less tolerant creatures, this was prime time to come out. That meant that there would be good eats out and about for Kozai to find. This, at the very least, he had learned.
To be fair, he had put a little bit of his massive ecosystem knowledge to play, but most of it he barely even reviewed anymore. His mind was solely on the hunt, and on the growing pain in his stomach. Or was it? There was also that chakra caused pain in his arms. He still hadn’t figured out much about it, but instinct (or subconscious), told him that he needed something else to ease it. More appropriately, he needed another organic being… maybe another person. Was it some kind of disease was this? Or was his body adapting to something?
Regardless, it was more of his subconscious that was working on this problem. He had his eyes and enhanced senses peeled for any targets… and there one was. The Ame villagers called it a Vizzerdrix, and it was dangerous. From what he could see, it was an enormous, carnivorous animal… and he had tried some of its meat. If he could get his hands on this, he would have enough good tasting meat to last him for a while. He crouched, narrowing his eyes. Then, as the beast stood up and looked around, sniffing, Kozai palmed a kunai and leapt.
The beast moved fast, unpredictably so. It slammed its claw down, trapping Kozai’s hand underneath. Kozai could tank this amount of pressure, but its teeth would be an issue… he might have to release more chakra, which might become an issue for him. He began to push against the beast’s arm with his other hand, pushing it off…
Then, the beast screamed. Its flesh contorted, and it began to be dragged into Kozai’s… palm? He was absorbing it! Kozai watched in shock as the beast was fully absorbed into his own body. His chakra flared slightly, and he suddenly felt tired.
He got up, and stumbled home, crashing through the underbrush as he went, bleary and weak until he reached his hut. He crashed inside, and onto his cot. He hadn’t felt strange like this since… since Iwa. Since the day he had learned the White Walker technique. Reluctantly, he put his mind to the task, casting the pain aside for the moment in order to think clearly. He had… absorbed the beast that he had been hunting? So, he had met the requirements for the jutsu. This technique allowed him to absorb another organic being?
However, he could still feel its presence. So, it wasn’t digestion… it was more like temporary assimilation. He held up his hand, and almost pulsed his chakra, when he stopped. He had experimented with something like this in Iwa before… the biological joining of two organisms, where one became a sort of symbiont on the other. So, were the fruits of his research finally coming out? Well, if anything, this would allow him to stop any minor grunts who came to find him. No one would miss a ninja who came across his hut and somehow determined who he was.
But now, how to deal with the Vizzerdrix? An idea took root in his mind. Now that he was prepared, and could set up a specific situation, he knew what to do. He walked outside, raising his chakra levels. The area around him grew distinctly colder, but not by much. He pulsed his chakra, releasing the Vizzerdrix, and with a slash of Hyakkasou, the beast’s head came off. Blood sprayed from the severed stump, indicating the presence of major arteries. After all, veins didn’t have that kind of pressure, which was why they needed valves in order to prevent backup.
He tossed the head aside, then dragged the still twitching corpse toward a nearby hut, the one that the little girl had come from before. As he neared the family came out. A mother, father, the girl and a younger boy, perhaps five or six years of age. All had burnt auburn hair, save for the girl. Hers was pitch-black, like his.
She looks more like a sister to me than Rin ever did… if that girl really actually was my sister. Agito never got the chance to prove it, did he? A pity that he died in that explosion.
The children looked at him in awe, and the adults silently. He placed the body in front of them. At this point, he could even see the yearning for the meat in their faces, and the drool coming out of the boy’s mouth.
“A gift in return.”
With that, he left, his black cloak swirling around him as the rain intensified, drowning out the sound of his footsteps and obscuring his retreating form as he returned to his own place. He felt… oddly good. He had never felt good for doing charity before… but now, something had changed.
