Task: Inside the villages there is not a training center that allows nin to hone their skills when attempting to rank up in their respective areas. Once such room is dedicated to the arts of showing your skill in your craft and the jutsu you have learned. This area is monitored by Jounin ensuring no one slacks off. Your mission is to perform at least 3 jutsu to show your understanding of how to mold and use chakra.
Komon had been anxious for his exam results for quite some time now, an entire week had past since he had completed his first trial and his anxiety was acting up, he simply sat at his desk looking out his second story apartment window and fidgeting with his thumbs as he stared at his mailbox waiting for someone to approach his mailbox. It was around the middle of the day and he had already been waiting for 3 hours, those hours however seemed to last much longer. Time moved slowly when one was as impatient as Komon Hyuuga. His long and hard wait was ended however when a man dressed in Kumogakure jounin gear walked up to his mailbox and placed an envelope in it before walking back in the direction he had come from.
Komons eyes lit up when he saw this, that had to be his results, what else would a jounin be delivering mail to his house for. So he jumped out the window of his apartment and the ground came rushing towards him, however with his training and this minor amount of height the fall was nothing for him when he instinctively rolled into it, his momentum carrying him right to the edge of his mailbox. Now in front of his mailbox Komons nerves began to act up and he started to doubt himself as his hand reached for the flap of his mailbox. “What if I failed…” The thought came into his mind, it wasn’t impossible after all, completing the objective was not a guaranteed passing score, if the jounin were not impressed by your performance they had every right and the ability to fail you.
Komon quickly shook the idea out of his head, there was no reason to fear his results now that they were here, he simply had to open the envelope and read. This action would kind of be like ripping a bandaid off, his score being the wounded area, ripping the bandaid off would reveal either a healed wound or an open wound, ripping the envelope open would reveal either instructions for his next exam, or a notice telling him he hadn’t qualified. “Here goes nothing” The young Gennin thought to himself before taking a deep breath and tearing open the envelope.
The envelope made a satisfying ripping sound as he pulled the paper apart with the force of his hands to expose the letter it held beneath it. Gently he pulled the letter out of the now ripped envelope that had encased it, and unfolded it so that he could read the words transcribed on it. As he flipped the paper to reveal the text he began to scan through the paper ignoring all words except for the two key words he had in mind. Pass, or fail. He made it about halfway through the letter before he found the paragraph he was looking for.
“Komon Hyuuga, your display at the the first testing outpost of the chuunin exams impressed all three of the jounin present as well as the sentry you paralyzed, you showed the cunning capabilities to avoid both enemies with ill intent and the ability to evade deadly traps, as well as follow advanced instructions. It is with great pleasure that I announce you have been cleared to move on to the next trial of the chuunin exams. You are to report at training ground 5 with the rest of the qualifiers at 1:00 PM tomorrow afternoon to begin the next phase of your trials, get some sleep and be ready for tomorrow.”
The letter lifted a humongous weight off of komons shoulders. The results from his exam had been consuming his every thought and hearing that he passed had felt more than great. When he looked up from his letter he realized it was beginning to get dark, and he recalled that the letter had told him to get some rest. The tricky thing about the chuunin exams was they never told you what your trial would be so it's not like komon could spend the time to train anyways. So with his thoughts racing he opened the front door of his apartment and ran up the stairs towards his bedroom, he shouted “I Passed!” as he ran past his brother’s door and heard a faint laugh from inside the room before he entered his own and jumped onto his bed landing on his back.
He still had the envelope in his hand and continued to reread it as he laid in his bed just to double check he hadn’t misread it, then pinched himself to see if he was actually awake. When he didn’t wake up he realized this was all reality and was extremely proud of himself. He just had to keep advancing at this rate, and one day… He’d finally be able to avenge the deaths of his mother, and his father. Content with himself he placed the letter on his nightstand to ensure he didn't lose it and rolled over onto his pillow, before shutting his eyes and calming himself so that he could drift to sleep. After a couple of minutes of forcing himself not to think about the upcoming exam his mind finally faded into the blackness of the night and his snores could be heard throughout the household.
He awoke the next morning feeling more well rested than he had in a very long time, his training often kept him up late at night and as a result he rarely got a good amount of sleep. He yawned as he sat up on the surface of his bed and stretched his arms into the air as the large breath left his mouth, he looked at his clock to see what time it was surprised to see it was only 11:00 AM, he still had a whole 2 hours before his exam, enough time to get ready and eat. Komon gained the strength to pull himself off his bed and onto his feet and walked over to his closet to pull his sweatshirt out of it. With the cloth in his hand he lifted it into the air and slipped it on over his head. He didn’t keep his vest in the closet however, as it was too bulky and heavy to fit with the rest of his clothes. Instead he kept it in a chest at the foot of his bed. Eager to get on the road he quickly shuffled over to the chest and pulled out his vest wrapping it around his torso and buttoning it into place.
With his gear on he looked into the mirror in front of him to see the curse mark he had put on himself in an effort to protect his kekkei genkai from attackers. He hated how it looked but knew all too well it was a necessary countermeasure as he looked back to recall on his memory of his mother, bleeding on the floor with her eyes gouged out of her sockets. The image made him shudder as it always did, it was without a doubt his most haunting memory. Quickly he rushed over to his nightstand to grab his headband and tightened it around his forehead, before tying it into place so that it concealed the mark that brought back the horrible memory.
Quickly he looked over his shoulder and back to the clock to see how much time he had left before his next trial started. The clock read 11:30, He had just over an hour and a half to reach training field 5. Training field 5 was the furthest one from his house and as a result he rarely ever went to it. But today he kind of had no choice thanks to the exam, the field was roughly an hours travel away so as Komon saw it he had about 20 minutes to eat to leave him with a 10 minute safety net. 20 minutes was not nearly enough to go out to eat and even if it was he wasn’t sure he wanted to with the way he had left things with amai the other night. So he saw it his only real option was to make some food himself, and eat it.
With the thought in mind he shuffled over to his bedroom door and opened it, which brought him to the narrow hallway, the only other door on this floor led to his brothers bedroom, and at the end of the hallway there was a staircase that led to the living room of his apartment, taking a momentary pause he turned sideways and rushed down the stairway towards his kitchen. As he turned the corner he saw that his brother was already sitting down on the counter, and for some reason he had the strangest grin on his face… Komon wasn’t much of a morning person and he wasn’t fully awake so he didn’t take the grin to mean anything important at the time. Instead he saw a plate in front of an empty stool and was excited to see that his brother had made him breakfast.
So komon started to dig into the plate in front of him, it was piping hot so it was definitely not finger food, he picked up the utensils to the side of the plate and began to push the utensils downwards so that they would stick into his food, however the plate slid to the side and his utensils only made contact with the wooden surface of the counter in front of him. He looked over as if he couldn’t believe what his brother had just done. He was not the person to take kindly to a practical joke in the morning, but to make matters worse the kid hadn’t just pulled the plate away… He was eating the food. That was the last straw for Komon, he stood up and slammed his right hand onto the counter while grabbing his brother by his hoodie with his free hand. “What the hell man?” he yelled at his twin brother. As he did this he began to surge electricity into the hand holding komori intending to shock him with Kieren no Jutsu.
He was shocked however when his brother simply smirked and said “Gotcha” before poofing into smoke, the boy he had just been gripping in his hand turned into the metal stool he had just been sitting on and when his keiren no jutsu made contact with the stool he gave himself a minor shock before turning around to see his brother had used substitution jutsu and swapped places with the chair, now he had his hands in a strange seal and was shouting “1000 Years of Death!” Komoris finger went straight up Komons ass and sent him flying into the shelves, before falling onto the floor and pain. Komori simply started laughing his ass off while Komon sat on the floor, half proud of his brother for outsmarting him, and half angry for getting outsmarted.
After a bit of moping he decided he no longer had time to eat and jumped to his feet calling his brother a jerk, and punching him hard in the arm before blasting out the apartments front door. The time was 11:53 leaving him with 1:07 until his exam and an hours distance to cover. His brother had really left him in a pickle with that prank. Komon decided it was best to run, to ensure he wouldn’t be late and covered himself in lightning chakra like he had done so many times before with his Lightning Javelin, when the aura surrounded him he was able to run at amazing speeds. Komon was probably one of the fastest gennin in Kumo thanks to his Lightning Javelin technique, and he only planned to get faster as time went on.
After about 50 minutes of running Training ground 5 made its way into view, the time was 12:43, leaving him with 17 Minutes until the start of the exam. He was surprised to see that the terrain of the field had been completely altered, and that a small stadium like structure had been built around it, this exam was apparently going to have a lot of spectators. Happy he had arrived early he sat on a bench outside the stadium to catch his breath, he had just ran for 50 minutes after all, in his mind a break was well deserved. He waited for about a total of 10 minutes before deciding he better sign in for the second trial. When he walked into the stadium like structure he was surprised to see about 12 other Gennin all standing around waiting for the trial to start as well. He saw Zekko, the boy from his earth dragon bullet training among the crowd and went to ask him if he knew anything about the trial.
Zekko told them a jounin had instructed them to wait in this area until exactly 1:00 and then they would all be called onto the field. So komon decided to use the remaining five minutes to socialize with other gennin, Zekko may have been off on the whole attempting to assassinate him part, but he had shown a bit of an initiative in researching what komon could do and counteracting it. If Komon ever found himself in a position where he had to combat them, the less of a mystery he was presented with the better his chances would be of beating them.
So he spent the next 4 minutes meeting three of the gennin, but was stopped when a voice came over the intercom above them, “Gennin, Please report to the center of the field and stand on the pedestal you were assigned in your letter… Enjoy yourself, Kumo is watching” The door beside them opened up to reveal a massive grass field surrounded by a running track and about 100 spectators on benches. Apparently the village had decided to make the trial a public event. Komon smirked and joked toward’s his friend Zekko. “Ready to get shown up, Killer?” as he took the first step out of the room and into the arena. Komon was nothing if not confident, he loved the fact that they had made this a public arena, he didn’t know what the trials would be but he felt more than ready to begin. His eyes scanned the crowd to look for anyone he may know but after a couple of seconds his first scan yielded no results. For a brief moment he imagined what it would be like for his mother and father to be in the stands to watch him advance in the chuunin exams. The thought brought about a pain in his chest, and he quickly shoved it away.
After a couple seconds of walking Komon stood in the center of the field where 13 pedestals rested, each with an imprinted number, Komon stepped on pedestal two as it was the number he had been given in his official chuunin exams letter. He looked to see Zekko down all the way at 11. As the last Gennin took place on his pedestal a jounin with a mic came out to the center of the field to join them. “Good afternoon gennin, and welcome to phase two of the chuunin exams preliminaries. My name is hayden, and I will be explaining the rules of this trial today.” The jounin smiled and turned around to face the crowd. “As residents of Kumogakure you all have the privilege to watch this part of the exam, contestants… It's important to impress your audience as the people in the crowd will be deciding the top 7 of you the bottom 6 will not be permitted to pass, several obstacles, targets and tracks have been set up on the field so that you can display your most powerful jutsu to the audience, you will have to display at least three ninjutsu to advance. These are your rules if you all feel you are ready to begin you may make your way to an obstacle of your choice, you all have one hour to display what you’ve learned, and will be competing at the same time, so choose your field positions wisely.”
Komon was almost bored by the challenge in all honesty, it seemed no different than his original gennin exam, except with the added weight that he was competing against other contestants. He looked around to view his competition and saw that others were doing the same, knowing that first impressions would be everything to an audience Komon decided to show off by activating his byakugan to see a target a long way down the field directly behind him facing his back. before reaching into his pocket and channeling chakra into a kunai with chakra infusion, then without turning around he flung the kunai behind him and completely shattered the target before any gennin stepped off of the pedestals. The crowd went wild when he did it erupting with applause. Komon smiled to himself, that almost guaranteed him a top 7 spot. With confidence he stepped off his pedestal and began to view the field looking for obstacles and targets that went well with his ninjutsu. But when he looked to his left he saw that the gennin had recovered from his first impression and were already catching the crowds attention, Komon decided it was probably best not to simply wait around or he’d lose the momentum he had already built.
So he went to the very first obstacle he could find and decided he’d figure something out. The obstacle was simply two metal walls with several holes creating a long hallway in the middle of the field, upon closer inspection you could see that there were cylinders with springs attached to the back of them. Komon guessed the springs would push cylinders outwards and were meant to jab at the gennin that decided to run through. Smiling he realized he had found the perfect first obstacle for himself, as his high speeds and awareness would easily allow him to dodge the cylinders. To add some visual effect he began to call forth his lightning based chakra for lightning javelin and felt the energy surround him and begin to stimulate his muscles, giving him enhanced strength and speed.
In order to draw the crowds attention he made sure that the blue lightning that surrounded him glowed as brightly as possible and took about 3 steps backward, before sprinting into the narrow hallway, as soon as he passed a cylinder in the top of the three rows, pushed out in an effort to hit his head, komon instantly reacted and dove downwards meeting the ground with his hands, now a bit further down the hallway a hole in the bottom of the three rows began to eject a cylinder and komon pushed upwards with his wrists sending him into the air narrowly dodging it, these cylinders were much faster than he had expected them to be, which was good in the sense that it looked more impressive to the crowd, and bad in the sense that it was much more difficult to complete this without messing up in the process, he was less than a fourth of the way down the hall and he was already doubting himself. But he couldn’t mess up now, that would destroy any momentum he had already generated in the crowd. So he pushed forward and reacted flawlessly when the next cylinder popped up in the middle of the row projecting towards his hips, in reaction komon slid onto his knees, evading the cylinder without fail. And watched as the next cylinder extended from the top row already on his knees he didn't have to worry about getting hit by it, but an idea quickly popped into his head as he watched it extend outward, and he pushed upwards with his shins so that he caught the cylinder with his hands, and swung forward with so much momentum the next cylinder didn't even have time to extend. He was still in the air when the middle cylinder came into view and he had no time to evade it so he simply landed on it, instead of dodging and placed both feet on the metal cylinder below him with perfect balance. Now only needing to evade two more cylinders before he reached his destination. He smiled at the thought of the crowd seeing two impressive displays in a row, and squatted down on the cylinder he was on before launching off and sliding on his chest under the next cylinder which was at the bottom, leaving barely a foot for him to inch his way under, komon then did a maneuver similar to his first evasion and used his hands to push the rest of his body upwards and over the last cylinder which popped out at about head height, doing a front flip over it and landing on his feet in front of the crowd.
He was met with applause and was feeling pretty confident, he decided it was ok too stop and take a look around at this point, curious as to what Zekko was doing, Komon only knew one of the kids jutsu, “Earth Dragon Bullet” But he was sure he had much more up his sleeve. With his byakugan he looked around and saw Zekko at the opposite side of the field, the kid was standing in the center of three arrow turrets and Komon almost jumped as he watched them fire in unison, he saw no way Zekko could possibly dodge them and was very concerned for his friend. But his doubt was proven to be foolish as he watched Zekko slam his hand towards the ground and 4 thin earth slabs rose up and intercepted all four of the arrows, This result caused Komon to smile in relief before checking the audience's reaction, from what he gathered Zekko was his closest competition in this trial, and the two would most likely place in the top few gennin. Not wanting to get shown up Komon realized he should probably complete another obstacle soon, he had already used both his byakugan, and Lightning Javelin, so he felt he should use a more visually impressive jutsu if he wanted style points. After a bit of thought he concluded which jutsu he was going to use, but still ran into the problem of trying to find a good obstacle to put it into use.
A little ways down the field towards the center he saw a machine that seemed to be shooting out disk across the field at a relatively steady rate, Komon realized this was probably to display accuracy with a moving target with long range ninjutsu, but Komon had a much different use in mind for it. He was going to hit a moving disk with his chidori, he hadn’t mastered chidori so this would be challenging as he couldn’t change his path after he started. So he watched the machine fire a couple more disk outwards to get a feel for its speed and trajectory before weaving the 11 handsigns for his signature A rank move. First he wove ox, and followed it with rabbit, and then two times he wove the sign for monkey, Dragon, Rat, Bird, Ox, Snake, Dog, Tiger, and finally he wove the last sign… Monkey. With the signs complete he felt the chakra shoot forwards and concentrate in his palm creating an almost blinding and beautiful field of electricity around his hand that completely engulfed it in light. Then he yelled “Chidori!” As he zeroed in on the disk that had propelled outwards from the machine he had studied so hard, he had to start running at that second if he wanted to make contact where he had been planning too… So he did, he dug his heels into the ground and began sprinting towards the disks trajectory, time seemed to slow to a crawl because of how important making contact with this disk was but Komen's training inevitably paid off and he intercepted the disk with skill and finesse in the end of it. As his chidori connected with the plastic disk the object exploded into several shards that eventually scattered across the field in the wind.
As he shattered the disk he saw something he hadn't been expecting at all however. Amai was in the crowd, and she was watching Komon, The last time the two had talked Komon had been rather harsh with her about her mother's death, so he wasn’t expecting her to be in the stands in anyway whatsoever. But there she was. The two young Kumo children made a sort of awkward eye contact before Komon retreated back to the middle of the field to find Zekko, he wanted to see how his friend was doing, and didn’t want to risk starting another obstacle so soon after Amai’s appearance had rattled him. She had really caught him off guard after all, and he didn’t want his emotions getting in the way of his performance.
Komon spent about 2 minutes looking throughout the field, and saw several gennin do some pretty amazing things, he noticed however that there seemed to be an odd amount of water user’s, this was good because it set him and Zekko apart from the rest of them, only about 4 others having different elements as well. One person that particularly stuck out to him was a girl who had mastery over the fire element, he watched as she destroyed 5 targets with something she called the phoenix flower jutsu. The targets burnt to ash on impact. Komon began to think to himself “Ok, so she’s probably gonna advance as well” Relatively briefly before he found his friend Zekko yet again.
Zekko had set up camp in front of a couple of hoops that were raised in the air, and Komon failed to even imagine what the kid could possibly do with a couple of rings raised in the air. He walked over to Zekko and decided to have a conversation with him, Sportsman like conduct could probably get him some bonus points with the crowd as well as help Zekko’s image. “Yo, Zekko… Whatchu bout to do?” Komon asked relatively relaxed to his good friend. Zekko seemed almost irritated by the question however. “Komon, don't disrupt me I can hardly pull this jutsu off as it is… besides you're already dominating the competition there's no need to sabotage me to make your chances better.” Komon laughed in response to the boy’s hostility… He obviously still viewed Komon as some kind of a threat, being all paranoid and assuming Komon was out to worsen his chances at passing the event. Komon decided it was best to give Zekko the space he had asked for and backed up while uttering the phrase “Good Luck”
After taking a couple steps back he watched as Zekko began to weave signs, a whole five of them to be exact, Komon studied them in an attempt to guess what Zekko might do, he had spent a lot of time in jutsu sections at the library and chances are he might be able to guess what would happen. He registered the first sign in his mind to be horse, then watched as the second sign formed a bird, and the third revealed itself to be a dog… Komon wasn’t gonna kid himself at this point, he had no idea what Zekko was about to do. And decided to quit paying attention to the handsigns and to shift his point of view to the hoops, Zekko obviously intended to use them for something.
And later his suspicions were confirmed when he heard Zekko shout “Earth Dragon Jutsu” and a pillar of earth seemed to take the form of a snake and move forward at alarming speeds. Zekko displayed amazing levels of control with it making it weave through seven different hoops spread around the field almost flawlessly. He knocked the fifth hoop down on accident, but the display still seemed to impress the crowd around him. However a chubby gennin standing next to it wasn’t to impressed by the accident as he narrowly evaded the collapse of the ring and ran over to confront Zekko. “What the hell was that man!” could be heard from anywhere on the field, as the child grabbed Zekko’s shirt and raised his fist. Komon looked to see if any of the jounin were about to intervene and to his knowledge couldn’t find one that showed any sign of an intent to jump in. So komon took matters into his own hands, and raised his right hand directly in front of his face pointing both his index and middle finger upwards to activate his body flicker technique aiming it directly at the chubby gennin currently harassing his friend, body flicker effectively sent him flying towards the kid and Komon edged his shoulder into his ribs sending the young jerk straight into the wall and knocking him unconscious. Zekko fell on his ass when the force from the gennins grip released him so Komon offered him an extended hand to assist him in getting off the ground. Zekko kind of nervously smiled and accepted the gesture and Komons kindness and the stood up before they shook hands.
Komon then left Zekko, allowing him to focus on what he was going to do next, the way komon saw it he had displayed almost all of his ninjutsu besides the shadow clone technique, he simply had to find an obstacle that complimented the technique. His byakugan was still active from the beginning and he wasn’t about to let amai know but he was watching her from the back of his head. She seemed to be enjoying herself, her chakra wasn’t racing or anything which showed she wasn’t mad… He still didn’t understand why she was here, he hadn’t even told her that he was going to be taking the exams to his recollection.
He refused to let her break his concentration however and deactivated his byakugan. He was however having a bit of trouble finding a course where he could fully show the skill of a shadow clone, then it occurred to him. An obstacle was just an optional part of this exam, and he had something much more flashy he could do instead. The idea was to simply fight himself… And win of course. So in an almost reflexive manner he used the shadow clone jutsu and walked to the edge of the field and onto the running track that looped around the field, which nobody seemed to want to use… Komon was feeling more than happy to change that situation however. He nodded to the mirror image of himself standing next to him, the two of course had identical thoughts in this situation, considering that they were carbon copies of each other presented with the same situation. Each one walked about 20 meters in the opposite direction of each other before turning to face one another and making direct eye contact. Komon took this pause to turn his head towards the crowd to see if he had caught their attention, as the rest of the competition has been going, he of course did have their full and almost undivided attention.
Now sure of himself he turned to face his clone who was standing 40 meters out and began to countdown from three, “Three” The clone braced for the start of combat by getting into a running stance, and komon followed. “Two” The clone hinted at his first action when a blue field of electricity began to envelop him “One” Komon took the time before he said go to activate his byakugan, he didn’t want to rely on his speed in this fight and trade blows with someone who thought exactly the same as himself. In this short amount of time he noticed the object that had been firing disks earlier was still doing just that, he smiled as it gave him an idea. “Go!” He shouted and watched as his clone moved forwards at alarming speeds, and a disk flew forward at almost equal speeds, The disk was flying forward with Komon as he ran straight towards his clone, the clone and him were quickly closing the gap and as the clone began to form a punch Komon formed a hand seal. The clone felt a moment of relief as his punch flew straight into what appeared to be komons face.. But the feeling quickly subsided when a cloud of smoke appeared on contact. The seal komon had used had been substitution jutsu and the clone had punched the disk that had flown forwards, and komon appeared behind the clone adjacent to his back. Komon knew the clone had insane reflexes with the Lightning Javelin active so he needed to act quickly with his next move. Komon had recently bought a Fuma Shuriken from the Kumogakure Ninja shop and already had it drawn, Flinging it forward as fast as he could he watched it soar towards the copy of himselfs back. What komon had not accounted for however was that the clone had already deactivated his lightning javelin, and had called upon his byakugan the second the cloud of smoke from his substitution jutsu had appeared. The clone quickly drew his katana and poured chakra into the blade in order to block the fuma shurikens trajectory. And the two once more faced each other, this time a smaller distance apart from each other than the last however.
Where they had once been separated by 40 meters they now stood less than 20 away, each copy of Komon heavily breathing, Komon had used a large amount of chakra in this event and was beginning to run low, His mistake was probably using chidori, considering how taxing it was on his chakra supply but there was no time to change that now. Komon began to think… “My chakra’s definitely running low, and to make matters worse i'm splitting it with a clone, My next blow should probably be a kill blow or I may pass out.” Komon finished the thought before formulating a strategy, and deciding that it was better to play the defensive. The clone knew that if Komon ran out of chakra that he would inevitably lose the fight anyways due to the fact that he would blink out of existence so he decided he had to attack fast.
So the clone used the last of its chakra to weave the 11 hand signs of chidori which Komon instantly recognized at smirked at, that would force him to run in a straight line and was exactly what komon was hoping for, komon jumped backwards as the clone began to dash forward and sent three kunai flying his way, of course the clone easily deflected these with chidori, but the kunai where merely there as a distraction to slow him down, komon knew he hadn’t mastered the chidori so the clone would be forced to run into the volley of kunai and individually block each kunai with the electrical current, which gave komon the time he needed to weave the signs for electromagnetic murder. Komon sent a wave of electricity towards his clone and watched as it poofed into a cloud of smoke.
Exhausted Komon raised his fist into the air to celebrate before almost falling to the ground but managing to catch himself by taking a knee. He stayed in that stance for a little bit to play off the exhaustion as a celebration stance, with one knee up and a hand in the air before regaining his breath and picking himself back up, walking down the track and retrieving his kunai and shuriken. Confident he had sold the crowd on his abilities he made his way back to his pedestal and sat on it as he watched the rest of the gennin display their abilities.
