"Steel"ing ones self (Mission)
Wed Apr 08, 2020 8:25 am
High Grade Steel
Kusari woke up with a yawn, and after smacking his lips a couple of times would head into his kitchen to make some breakfast noodles. He liked to be a little bit dressed up so his budget only allowed minimum for food. But he was rewarded with the grace of looks, however as he ate the noodles, he decided he needed to increase his taste in food as well. So he would get dressed for the day in a decent looking set of cloths, and headed down to the mission office. he collected a mission for the day, Feeling Adventurous he had them choose the mission. It was not until after he stepped out of the office did he open his mission scroll to see the Parameters for the day. Today he had pulled a mission that would definatly get him dirty, He grimiced at the thought.
So Kusari went to go get himself a set of cloths that he would not mind getting ruined and thrown away at the end of the day. And after changing into these cloths, he would be off, Taking the long way as he normally does to every mission. To the mines, There was a set of mines near the mountain . It was said many of things could be found there, but some of the best steel was forged right here in the land of Lightning. The village of Kumogakure was once known for its sword prowess, specially with their ninja. but that was a time of Myth and legend now.
Kusari reported in to the quarry's main guy, and got himself his first task for the first, third of the day. Starting at the lowest part of the job, Mining. Kusari would take the nessicary equipment needed, the hard hat with a light, and a pick axe and he headed into the mine. He was ushered in with a group of people down the shafts to where the mining was currently taking place. Carts of Iron Ore and Copper ore was being rushed out to the top as they walked by them. It was quite the interesting event indeed for him to witness even so far. There was even chirping, Canary was in a cage nearby. Kusari found this odd and asked a person in the line with him who seemed to have been doing this job for awhile now what was up with that. He got his answer promptly, that if the Canary died it was time to evacuate the mine.
Kusari made a mental note, keep an eye on the Canary. Then they arrived to their location to dig at and each was put about six feet apart, Ya know Social Distanceing. And Kusari swung the pick axe, he did not know exactly what he was looking for or how to do it, he was just swinging. But he kept an eye on others to get visual cues. SO he was to chip away till he found a vein, and then he needed to chip around the vein to see if it needed to go outwards to deep. Then he would have to dig away backwards to pull the chunk of ore out. Seemed simple enough.

several songs would pop into Kusari's mind through out the day as he mined away. everything ranging from Singing like a dwarf in a movie he saw once talking about saying Hi to some hoe or something like that, to singing about a frozen heart like some guy in the mountains farming ice. What a bunch of weirdos am I right? Anyways, He swung the pick ax , and swung it, his arms stung and grew tired, but he would not stop but to drink water every once in awhile. Seems this was not a uncommon thing cause the people around him just kept working and none of the overseers seemed to get on his case about the water breaks either. It was hot in a mine, and he was already drenched in sweat. He took a piece of cloth and covered it in water, drapping it across his neck as he would go back to work, swinging what felt like an already heavy ax, however it was only due to his body not being accustomed to such labor intsieve work, so he had no idea the time that actually passed, it was only an hour into working. Many guys around him had not even started sweating yet.
This cycle would continue on for awhile for Kusari. Swinging the pick ax, chipping away stone, finding a ore once in awhile, chipping away around the vein first seeing how long it went, and then swinging the pick ax to dig it out. Once in a while even getting a couple of chunk of ore out of the same vein. Going and taking water breaks, keeping hydrated as much as possible, and keeping his towel across his neck damp to help keep himself from over heating. Every once in awhile Kusari would look over and keep an eye on the Canary, checking to see if it was dead yet, nope the thing was still alive. Everything was still safe for them to continue.
Time flew when you had no idea what the time really was, or so it seemed , but it also dragged on when you felt nothing but pain at first. He was so sore, until his arms went numb from the push, he had pushed himself so much, he could not even feel anything anymore. His arms felt like jelly when it was time for their first break. Everyone sitting down , ice packs brought around for them to cool down themselves. Kusari took one and wrapped it up within his towel, and patted himself down all over, bring down his surface temperature, and then putting the cold towel under his arm pits to help bring down his core temperature.
After the break was over, he would go back to work, swinging away with the ax slowly chipping away at the rock wall. It seemed to get easier over time, but it was still over all rather difficult, he would need to do this for several days before he could be like the others. able to work on this one thing all day without difficulty.

After so long of Mining, the call was sounded. IT was time to switch what they were doing, Time seemed to fly since the last break to this moment.Kusari followed his group to the next area, it was outside, there was a giant furnace they were led to. There was several things they were showed that needed to be done, one set of people, would be feeding the fire to keep it hot and alive, another set of people would be feeding the ore into the furnace, where it would come out the other side melted down where it would get filtered for anything that should not be in it. And finally it pours into vats to become ingots. where it chills and gets packed to be shipped elsewhere or they are taken over to the blacksmithy. At the Blacksmith they are heated up and hammered into different things, but that is for a later time.
Kusari first was set on the team that would be feeding the fire and keeping it alive. First he started on the coal, shovelling coal into the fire much like someone feeding the fire in a engine for a train. this was almost hotter then inside of the mine, however the breeze outside helped out a lot. however they did not seem to take as long to switch spots around, next up the list was opperating the bellows which helped to keep the fire going by stepping on a giant piece of wood with a air bladder underneath. everyone who was stepping on it had to step in unison to get the bellow going strong and evenly. there was an identical side that filled up as the other side deflated down. generating a constant flow of air into the fire, keeping it strong and going.
Kusari was feeling the burn in his legs when it was suddenly time to swap again, this seemed to go much faster then when swapping from the mines to the furnace. Now he was feeding the ore into the fire. Watching it slowly melt as the fire stayed at the steady temperature to melt it all down. he was Shoveling once more , that was his main job at this point. but then after some time a lunch time was called Kusari did not expect it to take this long, and he needed to go hunt for his meal.
Kusari took to the woods, Kunai in hand. It did not take him long to track down a rabbit, and with a swift throw , caught the rabbit by the neck, killing it instantly. Kusari would fetch it and make a fire real quick with some flint and steel and some kindling, after getting the fire going, he built a spit out of the sticks nearby and began to cook the rabbit over the open fire, keeping it slowly rotating. It would not be seasoned. this however would have to do for energy for the rest of the day. This would be long indeed.

Kusari was finishing up the eatting of the rabbit he had caught earlier, cleaning off the kunai and putting out the fire. He got up and buried the bones of the rabbit, and then went off back to work, getting back to his station just before the signal to be back. so he was just on time. then he got back to work, stepping on the board and sinking down, holding onto the rope above to help pull himself back up. and then pressing back down. This was one of the more arduous taskes he did all day. but then it happened once more. and in came the signal, and everyone swapped places.
He had went to the ore again, filling ore until he was taken to the moulds. this was where the liquid metal was poured into the empty vessels, which when filled went off to rapidly cool, and when it was cooled off, it was hardened and removed from the vessel for them to be used again, the resulting hardened ingot would then be switched back and forth, One put on the pile to be shipped off, one on the pile to go to the smithy. Kusari kept up with the pattern for a good while, following the steps, flipping the ingot out of the vessel, putting the vessel in a different stack, then taking the ingot and putting in the appropiete pile in the pattern. Then when the carts got filled enough, He would begin to haul them off into their proper locations. The cart that would need to be returned to the front filled with vessels. then he would walk all the way back to get the next cart and then he would push it with some difficulty up to the docks to be packed and shipped off to another location somewhere out in the world. then finally Kusari would go back to the last cart, and he would push it off towards the smithy.
Kusari stayed for a moment to watch the smithing process, it seemed rather interesting. He could not wait to get to the next part. he would return back to the processing of the ingots . replacing the guy at the front part, putting the vessel in the empty spot and then opening up the port to pour the liquid iron and copper mix which made the steel , the entire process made it entirely pure , and high grade, they kept the partiulates out of the process. the more particulates they kept out the more pure the steel was.
Kusari was facinated by the entire process. he was quite excited, and would love to go back to this place, rather actually on mission or not. This was the level of hard labor he was looking for. That is when final break was called, and they would all head off to an area to get drinks of water and pour some on themselves to help cool off their bodies. After the break they would move.

They took a short break, getting water, and when they came back, the group that kusari was apart of got gathered up and taken to the next area, and the last bit for the day, the smithy. Kusari had watched them for a bit earlier. he had found the process he watched very interesting indeed, and ever since then he was looking forward to this part of the day. and with this transfer he was finally there. they stood back as they were explained to on how it was broken down , and how thing would go at each station.
One person would have to unload the ingots and put them into the forge. after being heated up so much they would take it out of the forge and put the piece being held by a pair of tongs on a anvil, where two people with hammers would strike the ingot a couple of time before the ingot would be flipped over and the process repeated on that side. and then once more the ingot would get flipped before being struck by the hammers a couple of more times. this was the process that flattened the ingot out into the different pieces they would be made into.
Kusari watched the process even more intently then he did before when he delivered Ingots. When he finally got the chance he would take a Ingot and slide it in to the forge and watch, waiting for it to heat up where it needed to. when it was ready he pulled it out with the tongs and place it on the anvil, letting the other two he was working with to swing their hammers one after the other. He would flip the ingot over, and they kept it going, then he would use his tongs to take the ingot to put it back into the forge to heat it back up.
Pulling it out again he would set it once more on to the anvil. where he would pick up a small sledge hammer and begin to help out, eventually he swapped spots, someone else would load the ingot on to the anvil and he would swing a sledge hammer to help flatten it out. this partiular ingot was being forged into a sword. and it was taking time indeed. this was being and proving to be the hardest part of the day, rather it was because so much worn him out already, or because it was the hardest part, who knew.
Kusari continued to hammer away, the sword was really begining to take shape, he was now on the other side of the anvil hitting from the other side. getting the most out of the day here that he could, this was the most intese work out he could have ever thought of to put himself through, he felt like a man he read about in a book once, if only he could hammer once into the shape much like the man could hammer once and drive nails into the ground with a single swing of a hammer.

Kusari finally finished the sword after some time, well at least the blade and the part that would be inserted into the handle. Kusari would watch the blade get rapidly cooled and hardened by being placed into water. when the steam stopped coming off, it was put into a pile of swords that was being shipped off away from the mine. then the next ingot was pulled out and put into the furnace. This piece was hammered down when it was ready down flat with another ingot added in, hammered down to match, and then a third ingot was added, this piece was getting big, but it was being forged into a breast plate. after they were fused together, they used the nose of the anvil to help form the breast plate in to the proper shape that was needed.
Every so often the plate was soaked with water and then reheated. this process was dangerous for cracking the steel, but the steel was high enough of a grade to survive such a method.it took some time for them to finish the process on the armor piece, but when it was done they put it in the pile of armor being sent off. When they were done, they got the whistle for the time to be done for the day for them, Kusari was disheartened in general, he rather enjoyed himself today. He would most certainly return to do this work again. When he was heading to clock out he was handed a Ingot he made pretty much from start to finish, turns out one of the quarter masters kept an eye on him the entire time, and made sure that he got a ingot that he mined the ore for, he smelted the iron and copper down, and even made the ingot.
He could not help but smile at the ingot , it was a reminder of a job well done. Kusari took his Ingot and headed back home, once more taking the way back home. a image entered his head of a bear singing as he walked towards his destination singing about being on his way to his location he had in mind. Kusari could not help but chuckle at the image, what was he even thinking of anymore. must have over worked himself in those mines. Singing bears, HA. Oh well.
Kusari would soon arrive in the village and he would walk up to the mission office. he was informed that they already knew his shift was over and was informed that he did a good job. at that time was when he was handed his pay for doing a mission well done, and was sent on his merry. Kusari would take his money and headed back home. It was to late to buy anything on the way home, so he would first head home and then get into a shower, that was certainly needed, as for the cloths, he would get new ones at a later date.
Kusari would throw his cloths away. getting dressed in ones to be ready for bed in, and he would throw the cloths in the trash in the kitchen where he would start looking for dinner.
