Pulling Weeds

Gonk awoke to the beeping of his alarm. Gonk sighed, he hated waking up to an alarm, but he decided it was necessary after almost being late to a mission. He pulled himself out of bed and over to the windowsill where he knew there would be a scroll waiting for him. He picked it up, immediately noticing it was a E rank. Gonk fell backwards onto the bed.
“I thought I was done with these,” Gonk complained to himself. He lay on the bed for a few minutes before dejectedly getting up and making breakfast. As he ate he read over the mission details.
“Gardening, I hate gardening. What's with E ranks being things I hate.” Instead of putting on his usual ninja gear, Gonk threw on some old clothes and his headband then left his apartment. Walking down the street Gonk saw villagers doing their daily routines.
“You know,” Gonk pondered, “even though we are a ninja village, we’re not the important ones. The villagers are the ones that keep the village running, and it’s them that we serve.” Gonk was distracted from his deep thoughts when he arrived at the house. Gonk walked up to the door and saw a note left by the owner.
“Please pull the weeds out of my garden. Don’t pull out anything that’s not a weed,” the note read. Gonk looked at the vast garden and groaned. He slowly walked over to the garden and squatted down to get a good look at it. It was filled with all kinds of plants, some of which Gonk recognized, but most he didn’t. He saw a tomato plant, so he guessed it was a vegetable garden.
“Hmm, these little yellow flowers are weeds, aren't they?” Gonk goes around the garden yanking them all out. He looked back down at the garden.
“What about these green leafy things?” Gonk pulled it up to discover a potato underneath. Gonk quickly reburied it and hoped the owner wouldn't notice. He continued this process of digging up something, then digging up the rest of it if he thought it was a weed. He discovered that a good way to tell if something was a weed or a herb was to smell it. If it smelled good he would leave it but if it smelled like grass or just a plant he would pull it all up. It seemed easy at first, just pull up the plants and you’re done, but roots are made to prevent that very thing and eventually Gonk started to get tired. He stepped back for a minute and looked at the garden. It looked tidier now with most of the weeds gone. Gonk did one final sweep of the garden, but he didn’t see any more weeds. Gonk looked to the sky and saw that the sun was directly above him.
“I should get some lunch soon,” Gonk thought as he stood up and walked away from the house. He dropped off the mission scroll at the admin building then went home.
