Two Actions in One

It was about eight o'clock in the morning when Kira made it to the Kumogakure training ground.  The sky was blue and clear overhead, which for this late in a year was strange for Kumogakure and also a sign that today was a good day to train in Kira's opinion. He wore his usual black and red jacket and pants but had his open to show the mesh shirt underneath since the temperature was slightly warm for once. The only thing that was different was the black belt with a red horizontal stripe going around, and his new sword with a black handlewrap, guard, and sheath that sat in a loop which attached to belt.

He walked over to the far right edge of the field and put his bag down by the fence not far from a wooden training post, then removed his sword and sheath to put them down carefully beside the bag. This was followed by a series of stretches to his arms, legs, and back before Kira finally decided he was ready to start. He replaced the sheathed sword back into the holster on his belt and put his right foot while sliding his left foot back before bending with his knees. With the form assumed, his left hand held onto the sheath while his right hand gripped the handle. Instead of a flash of motion, he drew the sword out slowly and steadily until it was out of the sheath followed by his arm moving at the same speed in a motion to cut against an invisible opponent in front of him. When that was done, he replaced the sword back in its sheath to repeat.

Kira felt slightly silly, but he had only the most basic of training with the sword and this was a little more advanced than that, so he needed to make sure that he got the form down right. He distracted himself from anyone and anything around him and just kept focusing on his sword draw and subsequent attack. As he did so, the motion and feel of drawing his sword out became slowly more natural, yet he still kept it at a slower speed for about an hour before he decided to take a break.

He walked back over to where he had put his bag down and sat down cross-legged beside it. He reached into the sac and pulled out a red water bottle with a black lid on top, unscrewed it, and had a nice drink of water that was still cool to his parched throat. While he hadn't been launching the sword out fast, his muscles were had still been tired by the repetetive motion and holding the stance for as long as he had.

After taking another drink and sitting down for about five minutes, he put the bottle away and rose again. Walking a short distance away, he reassumed the stance but this time he started to draw the blade out faster. He didn't do it haphazardly though and made sure that he was still holding and maintaining the correct form before upping the speed a little more each time. Beads of sweat ran down his head and body, but Kira didn't say anything and kept going at it more and more for about another hour until he was finally performing the technique at full speed.

Finally feeling he was ready, Kira walked over to the northwest end of the field where there was a plain square shack about twenty feet long and forty feet wide with a sliding door closest to the right corner. He opened the door and flipped on a switch inside, then came back out carrying two tatami mats rolled up and tied with his right arm and carrying a stand to hold them up in his left hand. He brought them about 10 meters away from the building and then put them down, taking one mat and and slipping it onto a peg sticking out in the middle of the rolled mat so it stood up straight.

With the tatami mat in place, he assumed the stance in front of it and readied himself for the strike. Taking a deep breath, his arm brought the blade out in what seemed like a flash and struck the mat - only for it to bounce off and only leaving a cut through the first layer. Kira looked at the mat dumbfounded, his jaw agape, and then looked down at his sword with a look like a pet owner who had just come home to their house destroyed. He had spent all that time practicing and perfecting his form, only to have so little damage done to it.

"Are you serious?!" he shouted. This got the attention of a few others who were on the field, and Kira just sheepishly gave them a wave as they lost interest and returned back to their own training. It was frustrating, but he took another deep breath and reined himself in - his blade didn't have that much weight behind it and this was why he needed to improve his cutting technique. He moved to a different angle and then performed the technique again - while he didn't get through the mat, he did manage to make a deeper cut than he did last time. That improvement helped to rally Kira's spirit and he did another few cuts until he finally managed to cut past the middle but not all the way through. However, the mat was now in bad shape and couldn't be practiced on anymore so he took it off the stand and put the other whole tatami mat on the stand. Taking a deep breath, he closed his eyes and once again blocked out everything else that was around him, before he drew his sword out in a blinding strike that cut all the way through the mat and sent the top half dropping to the ground.

He looked at it with giddy happiness, but then he wondered to himself if this had just been luck. He ran back into the storage shed and brought out another couple tatami mats, replaced the cut one with a whole one, and then drew his sword in another strike. Just like the last one, the top came clean off and dropped to the ground. After setting up the fourth, he drew and struck it down as well. Now he knew that it wasn't a fluke and could be satisfied. He returned the stand to the shed and disposed of the cut tatami mats, then went back over and picked up his bag before leaving the training field.
