Birds of a Feather - [Solo]
Thu Dec 03, 2020 9:53 pm
It had been so long since she had entered this room, and it felt like a lifetime of events had happened between her last exit and her entrance today - as she stepped into the Kage office her eyes would drift around curiously. The personal effects of Kenshin had been removed and the room was ready to be imprinted on by the newest Kage - Mizuki Ohta… or Kyuketsuki, she still was unsure as to how she wanted to present herself at the upcoming summit. Standing like a statue just inside the room she gripped the scroll she had retrieved from her family tomb - aged and yellowed, no longer held together in a scroll sleeve but instead curiously wrapped in a length of sturdy chain with bird talons gripping one another holding the scroll closed. When she spotted it in the tomb that day with Zaine she had the most overpowering urge to take it with her that she hadn’t fully realized it was in her possession til the two were on their way home to Suna - and now that it was in her hands once more there was a new nagging that pushed her to open it… somehow.
Finally pushing herself forward into the room she set the scroll down on the desk and turned to open the windows that were set directly behind the Kage desk - the light flooded the otherwise dark room, all the sudden the room felt more like a perch at the highest point in the village; and at once she felt more at home in the room than ever before.

Taking a deep breath of the cool air that flowed in she could feel her muscles relax, her hearing stretched out just to the door so she would have a moment's notice if anyone was approaching - but no one was, she had all but instructed to be left alone for the time being. So much to process so much to do, she even requested Kenshin keep her eyes off her during this time to give her a real sense of privacy. Her entire life had changed in the course of a few days, the world was soon to follow… after allowing her eyes to gaze down at the bustling village for a few moments longer she would turn and slip into the seat behind the Kage desk; her desk. The mahogany sheen reminded her of her home on the skirts of the village, reminded her of Souji who had grown so dramatically in such a short time but of whom she still viewed as her son all the same - being busy so often made her miss him and the time she had been able to spend with him. She would have to rectify that soon, possibly a special dinner or even just a yoga session for the two of them? Chi alignment was important for both of them - she would laugh softly out loud as the memory of their first time in her home came to mind and the comment he made regarding her meditation; he had come so far.

That wasn’t even to mention the change in her relationship with Kenshin and Zaine respectfully, time is really a cruel thing.. Especially when those you love don’t have the same lifespan as you..

Leaning forward, she would gently pull the tightly wrapped scroll toward her and lean against the tall back of the chair that signified her status in the village - all the while trying to push back the feelings that were rising given her brief freefall into the void of worry that opened up anytime she thought about outliving those around her. In her time growing up it had always been her, alone, with nothing but the next contract keeping her going at all. With no family to speak of since her exile and no friends higher than the barmen and women who allowed her to drink regardless of her age - she had lived and breathed for herself. Now she held such care, respect and love for the people in her village; and with that came the fear of loss. For the first time since she was 12 she had things worth losing - her life? What life had she really had before anyways? Living on the streets and drinking the blood of her targets to ensure she would never lose control again and attack without her consent. Later on of course Mizuki had found out what she was, she had found the most sacred tomb of her actual clan, had found out the truth of her lineage - and after all that with hope of family on the horizon, she learned that she was the last of them all; The Last Kyuketsuki.

Her thumb ran over the aged parchment held in her hands while her eyes searched it over for what felt like the hundredth time to find a seal or seam to open it with - all she found as usual was the tightly wound twin clawed chain that was clasped so tightly that no amount of force had managed to pull it apart. Running her tongue over her teeth in contemplation before snapping with a bout of frustration - snatching the scroll from the desk top she attempted to wrench the claws apart again, using every ounce of strength she had and funneling her chakra into her hands. She would have stood struggling like that for ages had her hand not slipped from its grasp, causing her middle finger to be sliced open by one of the metal claws and result in her quick withdrawal and dropping of the scroll completely. Her focus now on surveying the damage done she wouldn’t initially notice the change happening on the desktop below her; the moment her blood hit the scroll the red stain would be absorbed then disappear as if being sucked in - causing the chains to loosen and finally, with a click, the two clawed hands would fall open.

The temporary pain would subside instantly as the noise of the releasing claws reached her ears - with suddenly intense eyes she would stare at the finally released scroll. Placing her finger in her mouth she sucked the wound idly while she pulled the chain away from the parchment slowly - each clinking of the chain resounding in her ears as they hit the desk top until finally only the scroll remained. With both hands now she found herself slowly rolling open the mysterious paper to reveal what lay within - names, so many names of which she was now familiar with; and the first one was the name of the woman whose statue had held the scroll in question…. Her birth mother. There were many spaces left open toward the ends of the scroll and in a bout of impulse she would prick every finger tip of her right hand on her now extended fangs, spell out her name in blood, and join in on a clan tradition. Once her finger prints were implanted the scroll rolled back up and lay dormant as if nothing of significance had happened. Mizu watched as the pricks on her finger tips would heal as she contemplated trying out her first summon.

Clearing the space on the desk she would slide through the handseals with ease before placing her hand down in the center of the wooden top and watch as instead of black ink spreading out and forming the summoning seal deep red blood would take its place. The moment the seal was complete a small explosion of smoke would follow - with a wave of her hand she cleared the smoke to reveal a curious little owl standing on the desktop and looking around with interest. It was facing away from her so she was able to take in the colors of its feathers - a dulled grey with brilliant yellow feet - suddenly hopping around to face her it ruffled its wings excitedly and puffed up its chest; the amber eyes were set into a pure white face with a funny strip of turquoise across his beak and one talon on each foot. The owl was turning its face left and right as if taking her in as much as she was taking him in when suddenly she heard a funny high toned voice - “Who Who are you?! How long has it been? What's going on here?” The voice wasn’t accusatory or aggressive but genuinely confused and oddly… was coming from inside her own head. This new sensation made the hair on the back of her neck stand up but she remained calm as she took in the semi-hyper bird.

Composing herself she would clear her throat, take one more up and down glance of the twittering owl in front of her and introduce herself. “My name is Mizuki Oh-, Mizuki Kyuketsuki. This scroll was found in the catacombs of the the Tomb of my clan. I believe it called out to me and I was unable to leave the place without it in my hands. Truth be told I have a deep rooted feeling I am the last of my clan and this scroll must be-” She was cut off suddenly as the already large eyes of the twitching bird got larger than she could have imagined- causing his small frame to lean forward and balance on his talons as he took in her eyes at a closer range. “You’ve returned!”, was squawking at such a high volume in her head it made her wince slightly and pull her face back once more. Wrinkling her nose in the distaste the silence proceeding his interruption she would near hiss, “Can you lower your mental voice already?! Do you have any idea how loud you are?” It seemed that her discomfort paid the owl no mind as if began hopping around the desk and inspecting things here and there like a toddler released into a toy- Her shoulders slumped down as she fell back against the chair. Wonderful… I’ve summoned a child. The same high pitched squawk would invade her peace of mind - “Who Who are you calling a child?!”

The two toned eyes of the last Kyuketsuki flew open in a fresh wave of shock as she shot a look at the owl who was now entirely across the room with his head swiveled around to face her - a look of child like indignation easily readable on his open face. Narrowing her eyes a bit she sat up and leaned forward in her chair, her arms coming up on either side and sliding over the arm rests as she pushed herself to a standing position once more. You… can hear my thoughts? How?! There is no mention of this in any of the scrolls at the tomb, hell the only mention of Owls was- Her own thoughts cut off as a new bit of realization hit her - the woman holding this scroll must have been the sole keeper of the records and knowledge about all of you… a secret she died with as apparently so did everyone else. Her focus drifted back to the names scrawled in dried blood that was now tightly closed once more inside a seamless scroll - all was the exact same as when she first grabbed it from the vault except the double clawed chain was laying loosely coiled in a pile off to the side.

“Of course I can hear your thoughts, you’re telepathically linked to all the summons of my race! You’d think the daughter of our keeper would would know more about her history! I mean wait wait til the others hear about this!” The shock of the situation was setting in now as she stared at the bird from across the room but the phrase, “daughter of our keeper” didn’t make a lot of sense… I mean she was born to the Ohta family wasn’t she? “Wrong wrong again! You were born and hidden with the Ohta family in Hoshigakure, but it seems you have managed to find your way back! Oh the elders are going to be so pleased when they found out an original dynasty clan member has cropped back up! Not only that you actually know how to use your abilities, it’s more than we could have hoped for. Now if you ask me there was some rumors that the Kyuketsuki Clan had fully died out but it seems we have a last standing heir!” The level of excitement was gaining in octave as he spoke. “Wait a second… you’re saying I really am the last one?” For some reason, even though she thought she had squashed the idea from her mind, she was further devastated at the idea that it was just her now.

Of course I am… why did I expect anything less. Fine then, my summon race of… owls. Whats your name anyway? How many are there? Are they all like you? And what even is this?’ As she thought the last words she grabbed the double clawed chain that lay still on the desktop - but as her fingers reached it the cold metal she expected was warm as if she had been holding it this whole time. Upon contact the chain sprang to life and slid itself around her wrist and up to her elbow before the two claws clamped back together and went still. The whole motion was as fast… as she was, only leaving her time to watch it but mpt react - luckily the chain was not tight or restrictive and it felt like it moved on her skin with her. What the fuck.. The small owl had been watching her with the first glint of awe behind those bright eyes, before suddenly swooping over and landing on the arm that was wrapped. “I am Pakuun and you master, control the Shīringu no tsume - just as the first contract owner… no one else has been able to wield it before until now.” If owls could gulp Mizu guessed this would have been the time.
