Volunteer work. The things ninja are built for, apparently anyway. Seiichi grabbed a small backpack that was filled with his lunch, a hard hat, and other minor things, like writing utensils, and headed out the door into the village. He had gotten word that a group was reconstructing a small historic vessel. Seiichi didn't know what the name of it was or why it was important, but after being told to compile a history for Tanbogakure, he thought it was his duty to help out. That, and he had plenty of experience on and around ships, he hoped that would come in handy.
As he headed through the village to his destination he thought on the different techniques he desired to learn, and his recent run in with the Rats of the Black Foundry. Life was moving along at such high speed, he tried to grab hold, and not get blown away. Practice. Patients. The things will come. He has to try a little harder than most to accomplish his goals. Most of the 'kids' in class could absorb things so quickly, getting older he started to feel just how much he had to try and retain some of the basics.
Walking up to the address Seiichi could see a large building, a dry dock, he assumed. The large metal doors were half open to allow people to walk in. There was already a small crowd gathered as a small, 5' 3" man started to speak.
"Ah, welcome! My name is Uziki, I will be your build master today." The man said as he stood upon a large crate, big enough for him to see everyone in the group. "This is the Nightshade." He gestured to the skeleton of a ship behind him. "We have recently found blueprints to one of the first combat ships used by the Samurai. For history and academic study we have decided to see what the ship would look like in its full scale. Everything from the tools to the wood, it is all what they would have used back then, or as close to what he have come to believe. Don't worry if your not a historian or professional builder, we have people here that will help you along the way." He pointed to several people that wore white hardhats in the back of the group. "The ninja academy and our small group, have decided to come together and use this as a learning experience for us all. Now, if you'd please all pick a section of the ship, your whithats will direct you." The man stepped down, and started to talk to a few people in the front row.
Seiichi dropped his bag off in one of the corners of the building where there already seemed to be a pile, and then joined a small group at the bow of the ship. The vessel was actually larger than he thought it would be, about 20 meters long, and looked to have two sails, a smaller one in the front and a larger one in the back. He was no expert, but somehow he doubted if the samurai would actually use something like this. He shrugged it off and did what he was told. Helped lift large pieces of wood and hammer things in with a mallet. All in all it was really fun. Seiichi learned a lot.

There had been an argument, a threat to abandon the village, several glasses of sake, some crying, a deceleration of eternal friendship, and a nap.......and that was how Yasahiro had convinced Asahi to help with something as mundane as ship building. Though it was his understanding he would not be doing any of the actual physical labor, but instead the finishing touches. This was a modicum better, but still lacked the general pinash of the type of work her prefered.....I.E no work. Still a word over sake is a word to be kept. So the sound of his wooden clogs bouncing on the cobblestone announced him as he moved through the city and to the dock. His kiseru was resting between his lips, his left hand holding the bell of the long pipe. A gentle flowery aroma wafted from the pipe tobacco, thing strands of smoke wafting in the breeze. As for his attire, he'd opted for a pale blue kimono that was a little more sun worn that his normal taste. Still, no reason to dirty one of his nicer attires. Hair pulled back tight and low showed off his features, belaying his normal feminine look. Today there was no mistaking that Asahi was a man, adding to the confusion of the villagers in understanding the new comer, that was now confirmed to be related to the defacto leader of the Rice nations shinobi.
Finding a seat, he listened as the forman spoke and issued orders. A needle and thread in hand he had set to work in fixing some of the sails. his stitch work quick and precise, delicate fingers moved with a strength dexterity that their looks did not portray. Thinking back to his time within the Yagami stronghold he thought of the various watercrafts he'd learned about. He could not honestly place this design among the samurai's he had known, but naval operations had never been his focus, and in one way he and his father agreed that it shouldn't be his focus regardless. His place had been with steel and various ores, while his heart had been with fabrics and stitches. Not two things that went together, but he and his father didn't either. All in all, the time passed quickly, and despite his reservations and the complaints he would have for Yasahiro later.....he had spent many worse days while on this land. He'd watch as the gruffer men would hammer and load large wooden beams. More than content to sit on his makeshift throne overlooking the dock, large flaps of sail covering his immediate landscape.
This passed as well, and finally the ship stood tall. The inspectors moving across the deck searching for imperfections. The various resin compounds being used to insure the bottom was sealed safe from water. Moving forward he took his place next to one of the workers that he had seen, mallet in hand. Closing his eyes, he'd concentrate, reaching out into that nebulas, his senses moving beyond his own body and touching everything around him. Yasahiro had asked him to come more for this gift than his stitch work. His mind looked over the vessel, the jutsu allowing him to see and feel more than he normally could. He wasn't sure if the man next to him was a shinobi or merely a dockworker so he couldn't be sure if they'd notice the surge of chakra that accompanied the jutsu. Clearing his throat though, his eyes would flash open, he'd smile and whisper to the man he did not know as Seiichi, "There is a small hole, mid stern....better let someone know." With that he would turn and resume his seat where he had spent the majority of the morning. Uninterested if the man would take credit and fix a potential disaster or not. He'd done enough to feel satisfied.

Seiichi hadn't taken notice of many of the people as he worked. He listened to what everyone had to say about hammering, and then went at it. Placed more wood, and hammered them in. By the end of the day the ship was pretty much completed, at least the outside. They coated the vessel was some type of resin. Seiichi thought he should probably know what it was but he was truly clueless. After the ship was completed they all took a few steps back from their work and had the foreman exam it.
A gentleman let Seiichi know of a small hole along the mid stern. He politely thanked him told the foreman, "Sir, this young man believes there to be a hole, mid stern." He gestured to the man who spoke, then pointed to the part of the ship that had concern. Sure enough a hole was present. "Now, what do we have here." The foreman took a sludge hammer and plugged the hole with a cut wood and resin. "Good eye." He nodded towards Asahi.
The day was about over now. The sun setting over the trees and neatly built houses in the distance. Seiichi said good by and thank you to the people who invited them, and headed off home.

Making a mental note that the man had not taken credit when he could have Asahi smiled and simply nodded back at the foreman. Taking credit for construction pieces was not top tier in his things to do, and besides......Using his abilities to fix the ship was secondary to his own practice of his abilities. Still, he supposed deep down.....very deep down he was pleased with the days work. The rest of the days work passed quickly after that. The inspections cleared and the payment slips given to the shinobi who had taken the jobs, Asahi watched as the crowd quickly dispersed.
As for himself, a quick kip on the bed, a shower at the public bath which he much preferred, then a late shift at the tea shop. Whistling tunelessly, he made his way through the rice village. Taking in all that was around him. It wasn't, so bad he supposed. There were worse places.......or at least that's what he continued to tell himself each day. Yasahiro busy with administrative duties left little time for the cousins to talk. It was Yasahiro he had fallen, and while he had always thought his elder cousin needed him, perhaps it was the other way around. A little smile and shake of the head to dismiss such ramblings and he was back to his normal self.
His shift at the tea shop moved quickly enough. Not many customers, but not slow enough that his mind looked back on such existential questions of life. Instead his mind wandered were it so often did in these times, to the matters of the immaterial. The plane beyond their own. In truth he had not felt the deep rooted connection to the spirits in this country that he had felt in the swamp. He wasn't sure if the area before was saturated, or this one was simply lacking, nor had he had the time to research. Now though that he was settled in and things where starting to go his way, perhaps it was time to remedy such a thing. Night was out in earnest, but he made his way to the little shrine regardless, it was never to late to get a prayer in.
