Jiro apparently wasn’t the only one who was startled by the appearance of these strange creatures. As soon as he’d reached Okisho, two more people had showed up who apparently knew him. ‘This must be the team he was speaking about,’ Jiro put together, nodding a greeting to Tenshi and Himari when they arrived. “I’m Jiro,” he said plainly, but no time was wasted on pleasantries. As they spoke, a pack of giant rats came charging around the corner, and Jiro watched as the others leapt into action to dispatch them. Watching them, Jiro could see the result of their time together. They moved efficiently, leaving only a couple of stragglers which Jiro stepped in to handle, launching the cat sized rats into the air with a series of strong kicks and watching as they evaporated into mist.

With that excitement finished, the others retreated one by one to return home and get some rest. Jiro was skeptical about how much rest he could really get with everything going on, but for now, there was nothing else he could do, so he followed suit.

A few days later, Jiro left home to go and take a look around town. The plague of beasts had only gotten worse, and many people started staying indoors for fear of being attacked. The village shinobi didn’t have such a luxury though, and were being called on left and right to eliminate the creatures and launch investigations into their origins. Today was no different for Jiro, as he rounded the corner into the park, where a man approached him frantically.

“Thank goodness! I was waiting for more of you to arrive - listen, we have a new case - several new cases in fact. There are children around town that have manifested whole fortresses around themselves, and what’s worse, each of them seems to be guarded by an uncommonly large dream beast. That’s what we’re calling them… as it seems they are the product of dreams, are as the fortresses. There is one such child just up the way, in the park. I’ve tried to quarantine the area as much as possible. I need you to go and take care of the dream beast, and try to wake up the child. Please, try to do this without injuring him… Just get him awake. Good luck.” With that, the man ran off, leaving Jiro looking toward the park grimly.

A kid, and a ‘large beast’, huh? That was just his luck, but in times like these, everyone needed to do their part. Even if it was a huge pain. Shoving his hands into his pockets, Jiro walked further into the park, until he saw what he was looking for. As the man had said, most of the park had been cleared off, leaving just Jiro, a kid in a floating fortress, and what looked like a large black panther with multiple tails prowling around underneath it. He would need to take out the beast, first.. But planning his approach seemed to stop short as the panther targeted him with glowing yellow eyes.

Jiro stared right back at it, and stood his ground, chewing on the toothpick in his mouth as he slowly removed his hands from his pockets. It felt like a wild west stand off. Then, in an instant, the panther was sprinting toward him, leaping and trying to sink its teeth into Jiro’s shoulder. Jiro pivoted at the last second, wrapping his arm over the top of the beast’s neck and wrestling it to the ground, driving a series of hard jabs into its soft underbelly and chest until he felt the rib bones start to break. The panther roared and squirmed, wriggling desperately out of Jiro’s grip and kicking him in the stomach, its sharp claws shredding his mesh shirt and leaving a set of searing scratches in their wake. Jiro groaned and clutched his stomach, his hand coming away bloody before he yelled and charged at the beast, flickering out of sight and reappearing just in time to launch a powerful kick into the panther’s face, hearing bone splinter, before the beast collapsed to the ground and evaporated rather anticlimactically. Sighing, Jiro looked up and turned his attention to the fortress.

A boy stared back at him, his eyes round as saucers to see how he’d done away with the beast he conjured. Jiro squinted a bit. The kid’s eyes looked strange, he thought. As if they were clouded over by some sort of mist. “How did you do that?!” the boy demanded, crossing his arms in front of his chest. “I’m the Dream King! Nobody defeats my monsters unless I say so!” Jiro rolled his eyes, before jumping up in one strong leap and landing on the stone bricks just in front of the kid. “Begone!” said the boy, stretching out his hand as if to banish Jiro. Of course, Jiro just stood there, looking unamused. “Time to wake up, kid,” he said, before lifting his hand and slapping the boy smartly across the face.

The boy gave a jerk and clutched his cheek, a bit of clarity returning to his gaze as he looked around tearfully and sniveled. “... M-mama!!” Jiro crouched down, grabbing up the kid as the fortress began to disintegrate, leaping down before they could fall and setting the boy down on the grass. “Go home,” he said calmly to the kid. “Your mom is waiting for you.” The boy didn’t have to be told twice, and got up at once to run off down the street. Jiro sighed slowly, rubbing the back of his head as he turned back toward home as well. That was enough adventure for one day.
