Steely Good Looks {P}

“The will of steel is within all of us. Each member of the Nazar clan carries a legacy. This legacy as you all know is the ability to manipulate steel. And this, this is what we will be learning today.” Spoke one of the elders of the Nazar clan. Lucian had gathered with two other boys his age and sat in front of the aforementioned elder. The common denominator between each of the boys present besides their age? In six months time they were all going out on their coming of age journey.
As part of preparation each departing clan member was taught to use the element of the Nazar clan steel. The idea was that it would allow the clan members the ability to protect themselves if need be. As such they are taught to use the element only in defense and nothing more. In fact the elder was just going into just that subject:
“As you three know our clan is founded on the idea of mutual respect. We do not harm others if they do not harm us. And even if they do harm us we do not pay them back in kind.” The three younger Nazar clansmen nodded in agreement as the elder continued. “I remind you of this now so that you know your responsibility as a member of the Nazar clan. Our clan as you no doubt know can unlock powers that many shinobi can only dream of in their wildest dreams. Thus, it is our duty to use the power we possess dutifully and not in a destructive manner. I understand all of you are at different levels of enlightenment and you each have your own strengths and weaknesses. However, today I will instruct you all in the element that binds all adult members in the Nazar clan: the element of steel.”
“It is this common element that has served Nazars before you and will continue to serve them well after. Steel is our identity, we are steel. In front of you is a one foot long bar of steel. I would like you to meditate on it and know it, be the steel.” The elder finished and finally fell quiet allowing the three younger Nazars to work.
Knowing an object or a substance was a practice each Nazar clansman went through. It required one to know at the most intimate level what it meant to be the object. As such Lucian began what was a now routine practice of knowing the steel before him. Picking up the bar he felt it. It was cold at first, but slowly warmed up to his touch. If his hands could get hot enough he knew he could bend the bar with ease and shape it with his very will, but that was not the exercise today.
He now had an idea of what steel was and how it worked. So, with his task complete he returned his gaze to the village elder. A few moments later the other two young clansman did the same. They had each gained their own individual insight on steel. Perhaps they differed a bit, but it did not matter. It only mattered that their mind could identify it with relative ease. With the attention returned to him the elder spoke up again.
“Very well, it appears you have all reached your individual understandings of steel. With these in mind I would like you to bend the bar you have in your hands. Remember, do not use sheer strength as that will defeat the purpose of this exercise. Instead will the steel to bend, do not will yourself to bend the steel. Keep in mind you will need a steady flow of chakra or you will find this task impossible. I wish you luck.”
At once all three clansmen turned to the task they had just been given with a vigor unlike any other. The boy to Lucian’s right was clearly trying to bend the bar with his sheer strength despite the elder’s instructions while the girl to his left did not seem to have the will. Surely they would both get it in time as there was never a Nazar that did not. However, Lucian did not want to wait forever to control the element of steel.
Holding the steel with a single hand he allowed chakra to flow through his body and into the steel itself. Slowly but surely the stick became an extension of his chakra network. It became another finger, a finger that he could do with as he pleased. Focusing his mind instead of his muscles Lucian pictures the shape he wanted and much to his internal glee he felt the metal move in his grasp. The metal did not move quickly at first. Rather it moved less than a centimeter, but then at last it moved fluidly into an elegant “U” shape.
Smiling he held up his handiwork to show the elder. His success was greeted with a warm congratulations.
“Good job Lucian. Now repeat the process one hundred times with the same stick. Bend and unbend. Right and unright. Do that and you will control steel. Use it wisely. You may go. The other two will stay here until we are done.”’
Standing and bowing the boy turned and left with the steel bar gripped loosely in his hand. As he walked the bar bent like a wave on water. Were anyone to catch a real quick glimpse it may appear to be a shiny metal snake he held. He had control of the element of steel. In essence he was prepared to go on his journey. A journey in which he would leave as a boy and come back a man. Such was life as a Nazar clansman. He would travel and in his travels he would gain enlightenment. And hopefully in his enlightenment he would learn how to properly put to use the element of steel. However, for now he still had to live the life of a village-bound shinobi. For now...
