One more breath
Fri May 17, 2024 8:54 pm
Kaikos had left the bounty collection office shortly after completing his last mission and headed over to the village training grounds to get some extra training in. Kaikos had spent a lot of time visualising the next techniques he wanted to learn and felt that he was close to completing a few techniques he had been working on and decided to practice a few others he had just started looking into. The training grounds were was quiete this time of night but the practice arena was usually accessible and it was common for at least two or three people to be present at all times and very occasionally a Chunin could be spotted trying something new or simply practicing their basic techniques. Kaikos imagined that the more secretively ninja would tend to train in isolation for certain techniques and that was often his preference yet some techniques could simply not be trained as well without striking the training dummy’s to feel the technique making contact and this was a vital step for Kaikos’ learning behaviours he had recently discovered.
Kaikos found himself a small area with a few practice dummy's he could use that was a little out of the way. Recently he had been looking into learning a couple of bukijutsu techniques and was also determined to finally break through with the total concentration breathing method and he had spent hours analysing each jutsu's applications and whether they would suit his particular fighting style. In the end Kaikos had decided to begin by completing his breathing technique before moving on to other weaponry or sensory techniques. Total concentration breathing method was a foundational technique that would allow Kaikos to access another level of weaponry mastery that formed the foundation for many unique styles that incorporated the elemental chakra natures. Kaikos also theorized that once he had learned the breathing methods then he should be capable of developing his own version of the techniques utilising his clans inner qi, creating something more unique to himself and his clan. In that way Kaikos believed he could leave some sign of his existence if he could master the techniques and write them down for prosperity.
Kaikos realized that the applications and versatility of the total concentration breathing method were exactly what he needed to gain a hidden edge on unsuspecting opponents and could be used for devastating effect when combined with his inner qi. If Kaikos was entirely honest with himself, he also hoped that if he were to come face to face with the missing nin that wounded him as a child then he wanted to kill them with a technique utilising his clans ability. It would be a small victory in the unlikely event he ever crossed paths with that person again but a scenario that brought Kaikos a measure of silent satisfaction.
He paused by the dummy and seated himself as he began the meditative breathing techniques that would allow him to enter the first stages of the technique. Breath in and breath out, Kaikos repeated the controlled breathing over and over with patience and precision as he willed his chakra to ebb and flow in alignment with each breath. During those moments of meditation Kaikos felt as though he could become one with his surroundings and his enhanced alternative senses that made up for his eyes almost felt like they expanded to cover the whole training grounds though he knew this was not actually happening. The experience was enjoyable however. He felt the breath swirl and time with his chakra, flowing through out his body, strengthening, and enhancing it beyond what would normally be achievable with pure strength alone.
After a short time he felt his body become lighter and more precise even to his enhanced senses over his body and he slowly stood whilst maintaining the breathing and focusing absolutely on controlling his chakra to match each breath. He had achieved this level many times but the true test would be in maintain it whilst wielding his weapons. Kaikos tapped a seal on his uniform and opening his hand to receive the finely balanced naginata, clasping his hand with practiced precision as he felt the cool metal draw heat from his open hand the instant before it would drop. He maintained the breathing and began slowly sweeping the weapon and slow laborious controlled arcs, matching the rhythm of his breathing. Kaikos began moving a little faster, two beats per breath and began practicing a self taught series of movements that Kai had constructed into a kata of his own creation. The kata had been created to emulate the rhythm of waves crashing on the shore, Kaikos finding more certainty in that rhythm and because of his own water chakra nature it seemed a perfect basis for his techniques to start with. Kirigakure was abundant with water in many forms and Kai pictures a trail of flowing water through the air, following each stroke and movement of the naginata blade. As he sped up the movements he switched hands smoothly as the blader and shaft passed quickly around his back and past his chest, creating a swift moving barrier around his body and covering all possible angles of attack.
In Kai’s own minds eye, he was at the centre of storm of raging water that followed and infused the naginata. To onlookers the sweeping strokes would leave small faint trails of blue light from the infused chakra. To Kai’s keen sensory abilities his chakra infusion was obvious and clear, using the weapon to create a disorientating pattern that he hoped might also make sensory ninja weary and uncertain in case his opponents, like him, did not rely on sight alone. As he continued the kata he felt his body begin to speed up and flow easily into swifter movements well as his chakra becoming more refined and controlled. To his mind it felt as though his chakra had become sharper, or perhaps purer though he could not say why and the description was insufficient to describe the full scope of the changes he experienced. Kai struck out with several deft strikes at a nearby dummy striking it with deep slashes that provided a satisfying reverberation with each successive blow without slowing his movements.
Next Kai began moving in a circular motion around the dummy slashing it repeatedly with small light scratches, focusing more on precision and control than power, trying to memorize the feeling and match each slash to an equally precise depth. The movements whipped up the sand around his feet and he exalted in the feeling and sound of his weapon as he controlled each precise movement with speed and skill. Finally he decided to emulate the waves once more, making a series of dashes closer into the dummy and striking it with the naginatas haft and slashing it with the blade as he retreated back and forth whilst encircling the target dummy and maintain his focused breathing. Finally he stepped back and lightly planted the haft of his weapon gently to the ground and allowed his carefully maintained breathing to end as he took in multiple lungful’s of air and feeling the increased energy of his body dissipate into the earth and air around him as his body steadily returned to its normal state of being.
Kai activated the same seal he had produced the naginata from on his uniform and flexed his hand as the weapon returned to his hidden sealed space inside his sleeve. Kai reflected that whilst on missions he may begin using the detachable pole section as a walking cane of sorts and pondered that it would surely form another level of distraction for would be attackers or enemies whilst allowing him to have access to a weapon at all times. Kai did not like having to look weaker or reliant on a cane but the benefits outweighed his own small sense of pride.
Kai took a short break to rest his limbs before continuing with training of a different kind. The breathing and movements felt natural and stable to Kai and he was glad he had taken the time to practice with actual targets to refine his technique.
Kai activated another seal on the inside of his opposite sleeve and grasped the uniquely crafted spiked kusari gama he had ordered from Saturns Orbital Accessories and Palm Readings in Kumogakure. The weapon itself allowed Kai to shorten and lengthen the chain and so the reach of the weapon at will using a tactile handle which suited Kai more than a traditional kusari gama may have done. Kai had previously practiced using the variable length chain and handle to control the lengths fastidiously at home and as he wandered the village at night and found he was now comfortable with the particular quirks of the weapon. The other bonus was that is could be used in a sword like manner which further increased its versatility. In truth he weas sceptical about the weapons description but it had proven to be better than anticipated.
Kai began with basic slashes and techniques as he span the blade on the end of the chain, generating a high pitched whistling noise and it cut through the air with rapid rotations. Kai began whipping the chain outwards as the blade struck home repeatedly on the static targets. Kai listned intently, measuring the time for the noise to reach him and using the fractional differences to let him more accurately judge the length of chain required to strike each target. After a little more practice he began dashing around rapidly as he struck out at range with the kusari gama before dashing in close, catching the blade and sliding it along the chain to reach the target without having to shift the weight of the chain along with it. He extended both arms and allowed the chain to spin around his arms and body before rotating his own body to unreel the chain with greater speed and force. As he unfurled the chain he infused the weapon with his chakra before slashing the large blade down deftly with the chain, cutting the dummy cleanly in two before unleashing a series of further slashes that cut the remaining dummy parts into smaller wooden sections before they hit the ground.
Once Kai was satisfied with his grasp over the weapon he began focusing on utilizing it in alternative ways and began practicing a technique he had heard explained that could be used to capture opponents non lethally or at least restrict their movement temporarily. Kai gathered the wooden sections of the dummy, throwing them high into the air before using the Spiked kusari gama's chain to catch them before they could fall and hit the ground. At first he only caught one of the planks, frowning at the additional complexity of capturing multiple pieces of wood within the coils of the chain but refusing to give up so easily. Kai’s life had been one of struggle and each step higher was build on a foundation of failed attempts, so he was naturally patient when it came to training. After several hours of repetition, he had begun to consistently capture two pieces of wood in the chain coils but the third and fourth still alluded him. He knew it would be possible but mused that he was unlikely to be using it on multiple targets thought the practiced control it provided would be invaluable in the long run.
Kai also began to practice using the chain to bind the two pieces of wood together so that he could improve his targeting skills on moving targets and this method of training though time consuming, allowed him to experiment a lot and required a slightly different approach each time to catch the pieces of wood. He enjoyed the unpredictability of the training method he had discovered as it would more greatly allow him to train his own reactions which again would be vital during missions and real combat though he knew the training would drive many people mad with boredom or frustration.
Kaikos had cultivated a vast amount of patience whilst growing up and training and did not consider any attempts to be an outright failure but rather a lesson learned and a chance to reflect on the minutia of his movements to better improve and prevent the same mistake happening twice. Kaikos drew the chain back into his haori sleeve and gripped the kama blade like wielding a sword before giving a few experimental swings. The weapon felt like an extension of his arm as he barely registered the weight difference compared to the other end of the chain and he compensated the amount of strength required subconsciously as he simply enjoyed the feeling the chain moving through his fingers and the sound of the kama cutting through the air with each slash. Until now Kaikos had only practiced capturing the pieces of wood using the weighted end of the chain in anticipation of using the blade for a finishing blow. This seemed the logical first steps but kai identified that he should be able to utilize the whole of the weapon in his techniques. Kaikos was also toying with the idea of using the spiked kama blade to hook into the opponent, strengthening the binding and perhaps allowing for a combination technique with the chakra blade to finish his opponent without having to get close enough to strike.
Kaikos gathered the pieces of wood he had cut from the former dummy and returned his spiked kusari gama to the hidden seal in his sleeve before seating himself on the ground and taking a rest to regain his breath and stretch his aching muscles, stretching and massaging them methodically to remove their fatigue and promote the blood flow. He reflected on the training and the new insights he had managed to grasp as he felt the comfortable wet mist on his face and on his skin, mingling with his sweat and dulling the sounds of the village slightly. He began focusing on his breathing and felt the energy flood his body before he sprang to his feet and making the seal of confrontation within his large sleeve as he made his way home whilst maintain the total concentration breathing for as long as he could hold it, further reinforcing the training he had worked hard on that day.
